Is There a Natural, Non-addictive, and Non-anti-reward, Safe, Gene-based Solution to Treat Reward Deficiency Syndrome? KB220 Variants vs GLP-1 Analogs.

Reward deficiency syndrome (RDS) is an umbrella term encompassing a wide array of addictive behaviors that affect individuals across diverse spectra of society. Our research group has conducted a plethora of studies investigating the utilization of KB220 and its various iterations for addressing RDS, including: dopamine homeostasis, brain areas associated with dopamine, functional connectivity, qEEG, reductions of cravings, relapse prevention and detoxification, opioid-seeking and attenuation of intake, binge-drinking and withdrawal, driving under the influence (DUI), shopping and hoarding beh

Obsessive Compulsive "Paper Handling": A Potential Distinctive Behavior in Children and Adolescents with KBG Syndrome.

KBG syndrome (KBGS; OMIM #148050) is a rare disease characterized by short stature, facial dysmorphism, macrodontia of the upper central incisors, skeletal anomalies, and neurodevelopmental disorder/intellectual disability. It is caused by a heterozygous variant or 16q24.3 microdeletions of the ANKRD11 gene (OMIM #611192), which plays a primary role in neuronal development. KBGS traits are variable, and mild expressions of the phenotype may complicate diagnosis. The present work aims at improving the characterization of KBGS in order to facilitate its recognition. A Case of Cachexia Secondary to Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), a relatively common psychiatric illness, is diagnosed using DSM-V criteria. Its severity is assessed using the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS). Symptoms are broken down into five categories of obsessive-compulsive (O-C) manifestations: contamination/cleaning, symmetry/ordering, taboo thoughts, doubt about harm/checking, and worry about throwing away items that could prove useful or valuable/hoarding. CBT in the form of exposure response therapy (ERP) and/or SSRI/clomipramine administration is the mainstay of treatment. We present a unique OCD

[Klotho and vascular calcification].

The link between chronic kidney disease(CKD)and cardiovascular diseases has recently been attracting attention as cardiorenal connection. Vascular calcification due to down-regulation of klotho is partly involved in the pathogenesis of cardiorenal connection. Klotho protein which is mainly expressed in the distal convoluted tubule, is directly correlated with renal function. Of note, its expression has already been decreased in patients with estimated glomerula filtration rate(eGFR)of 60~90 mL/min/1.73 m2 compared with those with eGFR of more than 90 mL/min/1.73 m2. In early CKD, compensatory

Predictors of deep brain stimulation response in patients with obsessive compulsive disorder: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic and debilitating condition, often resistant to conventional treatments. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) emerges as a promising intervention, but its efficacy varies among patients, underscoring the need to understand the predictive factors influencing its outcomes. To evaluate and compare disease and patient characteristics in their ability to predict response to DBS in OCD patients. All major databases were searched for original studies. This study differentiated responders, partial responders, and non-responders based on relative post-treatment Y

Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder increases cognitive inflexibility in people with coronary artery disease.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular diseases such as coronary artery disease (CAD) have a high prevalence of psychiatric comorbidities, that may impact clinically relevant outcomes (e.g., cognitive impairment and executive dysfunction). Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) is a common psychiatric comorbidity in CAD. It has a distinct cognitive profile characterised by inflexible thinking and executive dysfunction, which in turn may affect treatment adherence. However, the impact of OCPD on cognitive functioning in CAD is under-researched. We aimed to investigate the impact of OCPD on execut

Blunted food conditioned place preference-like behavior in adolescent-stressed male hamsters.

Social stress during adolescence results in long lasting weight gain, obesity, and enhanced food hoarding behavior in hamsters. We wanted to determine whether stress also enhanced conditioned place preference-like behavior (CPP-like) for food reward, as would be expected from studies with substances like cocaine. Our experimental animals were exposed daily to aggressive adults for two weeks in early puberty, while also trained to explore a V-shaped maze containing a food reward at one end. They were tested for CPP-like behavior on the last day of social stress. Our results showed that while st

Aetiological overlap between obsessive-compulsive related and anxiety disorder symptoms: multivariate twin study.

BACKGROUND: The aetiological boundary between obsessive-compulsive related disorders (OCRDs) including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and anxiety disorders is unclear and continues to generate debate. AIMS: To determine the genetic overlap and the pattern of causal relationships among OCRDs and anxiety disorders. METHOD: Multivariate twin modelling methods and a new regression analysis to infer causation were used, involving 2495 male and female twins. RESULTS: The amount of common genetic liability observed for OCD symptoms was higher when considering anxiety disorders and OCRDs in th

Females who maltreat animals.

Studies of animal maltreatment and of untoward or abnormal aggression predominantly involve male subjects, raising the question as to whether females who engage in such behaviors are like, or fundamentally different than, their male counterparts. Inquiry to address this issue could pertain to gender similarities and differences; moreover, it could provide greater understanding of the behavior itself, in this case, animal maltreatment. Of the various patterns of animal maltreatment in the literature, there are enough studies with gender addressed to allow some observations on two patterns: anim

The Suitability of Different Subtypes and Dimensions of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder for Treatment with Anterior Capsulotomy: A Long-Term Follow-Up Study.

OBJECTIVE: Anterior capsulotomy (AC) is sometimes used as a life-saving treatment for patients with treatment-refractory obsessive-compulsive disorder (Tr-OCD). Most of the previous studies have assessed only total symptoms and have concluded that AC is a safe and effective procedure. Few of these studies have focused on meticulously investigating the variety of results obtained from patients with different subtypes of OCD. This study reviewed the long-term effects of AC on patients with OCD and analyzed the dissimilarity between particular subtypes of the disease in order to determine which g

Diogenes syndrome in a 10-year retrospective observational study: An elderly case series in Tokyo.

OBJECTIVES: Supporting people suffering from Diogenes Syndrome (DS) is a challenge for geriatric psychiatry. However, there is a lack of knowledge about DS in Japan. Therefore, a systematic longitudinal study to clarify the factors associated with DS and its prognosis was conducted. METHODS/DESIGN: A retrospective study using data from case records of a municipal psychogeriatric service was conducted. The study population was socially isolated older adults with complex mental health and social care needs who had been referred to the service over 10 years. The participants were stratified into

Punding as a complication of brain stem stroke?: report of a case.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Stereotyped motor behaviors, known as "punding," originally described among amphetamine abusers have only recently been reported in Parkinson disease associated with both pro-(eg, levodopa) or anti-(eg, quetiapine) dopaminergic therapy. We describe a non-Parkinson disease case of nonpharmacologically induced punding as a complication of a brain stem cardiovascular accident. SUMMARY OF CASE: A 54-year-old man, after an episode of brain stem cardiovascular accident secondary to basilar artery thrombosis, was noted to endlessly purchase and hoard food items and to write,

TD: The case of Diogenes Syndrome-deficit or denial?

Diogenes Syndrome (DS) is characterised by extreme self-neglect, domestic squalor, hoarding, social withdrawal, and lack of concern and shame for the individual's residential situation. This paper describes TD who was unable to identify emotional expressions of disgust and was borderline-impaired for facial recognition associated with perceptual difficulties. Problems interpreting expressions of disgust were interesting as TD was living in squalor, neglecting himself, and lacked concern for his circumstances. This led us to question whether the basis of his difficulties were neuropsychological

CPA governance restructuring and section autonomy: a case study in organizational resistance to structural diversity.

This case study critically examines governance changes enacted within the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) following internal advocacy for structural representation of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) members. Drawing on qualitative document analysis, the study examines a series of bylaw amendments proposed and approved by the organization's leadership that centralize authority within the Board and Chief Executive Officer while reducing the autonomy of constituent member groups (CPA Sections). Using the lenses of power hoarding and the division of powers framework, the an

Cassiterite U-Pb geochronology: A framework for tin provenance in the Bronze Age world.

The origin of Bronze Age tin is one of the most compelling mysteries in global archaeology. A number of studies were carried out to identify fingerprints to determine tin sources, but all failed to suit the contexts of Bronze Age China. This study provides the first comprehensive provenance analysis of the tin ore utilized during the Shang dynasty of China. Using U-Pb dating analysis on cassiterite grains surviving in various contexts including primary smelting site, metal resource hoard, and bronze casting workshop, this study demonstrates that cassiterite materials from the Great Hinggan Ran

Obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders: still in search of the concept-affirming boundaries.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Controversy exists about the diagnostic grouping of obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders (OCSDs) - conditions that are to some extent related to obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). This review will re-examine OCSDs in light of the currently available evidence. RECENT FINDINGS: It appears that OCSDs will not constitute a separate nosological group and, if this term is accepted, OCSDs may be grouped together with the anxiety disorders. Much needs to be done to refine the criteria for membership in the OCSDs. In contrast to previous proposals, only a few disorders may be i

Obsessive-compulsive features in pathological lottery and scratch-ticket gamblers.

The results of this study support the notion that pathological gamblers drawn from the community would score higher on all three scores from the YBOCS than light gamblers. Consistent with hypotheses, pathological gamblers (lottery and scratch ticket) reported more obsessions, compulsions, and avoidance behavior than the light gamblers, and also reported having more urges to engage in injurious behaviors to themselves and others. These findings provide evidence that pathological gambling falls in a spectrum or family of disorders which have obsessive-compulsive disorder at its core. These findi

Impacts of Stressful Life Events and Traumatic Experiences on Onset of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Not a few patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) have experienced events that affected the onset. The onset of OCD is not limited to the original meaning of trauma; rather, traumatic experiences such as unexpected exposure to contaminants or various stressful life events often cause the onset of OCD. It would be useful to understand the experiences surrounding the onset, including stressful life events and traumatic experiences, for comprehension of the pathophysiology of OCD. In the present study, we investigated the onset conditions of 281 patients with OCD and compared clinical c

Differentiation of 2 Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Subgroups with Regard to Demographic and Phenomenological Characteristics Combining Multiple Correspondence and Latent Class Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Classic factor analysis of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) dimensions and attempts to identify valid subgroups have not yet produced definitive conclusions. OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: This study aims to examine possible homogeneous subgrouping of demographic and phenomenological characteristics in 134 treatment-seeking OCD patients. A combination of multiple correspondence analysis (MCA) and latent class analysis (LCA) was used. RESULTS: MCA showed 2 distinct subgroups of OCD patients and LCA confirmed this result by a two-class solution. Both analyses demonstrated (a) a clear

It Takes a Village…: Contending With Drug Shortages During Disasters.

Critical drug shortages have been widely documented during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, particularly for IV sedatives used to facilitate mechanical ventilation. Surges in volume of patients requiring mechanical ventilation coupled with prolonged ventilator days and the high sedative dosing requirements observed quickly led to the depletion of "just-in-time" inventories typically maintained by institutions. This manuscript describes drug shortages in the context of global, manufacturing, regional and institutional perspectives in times of a worldwide crisis such as a pandem
