OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prevalence and clinical associated factors of alcohol use disorders (AUD) comorbidity in a large clinical sample of patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
METHODS: A cross-sectional study including 630 DSM-IV OCD patients from seven Brazilian university services, comparing patients with and without AUD comorbidity. The instruments of assessment used were a demographic and clinical questionnaire including evaluation of suicidal thoughts and acts and psychiatric treatment, the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I disorders (SCID-I), the Yale-Bro

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a heterogeneous condition often characterized in relation to major symptom dimensions, including contamination, symmetry/exactness, religious, aggressive, sexual, hoarding/saving, somatic, and miscellaneous. Aggressive obsessions, defined as intrusive thoughts of (unintentionally or intentionally) harming oneself or others, are experienced as distressing, commonly misdiagnosed by healthcare providers, and highly stigmatized. The aims of the current study were to: (a) provide an aggregate estimate of the worldwide prevalence of aggressive obsessions among

Recent years have seen unprecedented increases in compulsive behaviors, even in previously undiagnosed populations. Yet, despite their rising prevalence and the fact that compulsions-notably associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), but also a key feature of other disorders such a hoarding or body dysmorphic disorder-significantly hamper daily function, the specific mechanisms of their formation remain unknown. Previous research holds mixed findings on compulsivity-linked cognitive deficits, and, while many accounts assume that compulsions aim to reduce anxiety, most individuals wit

Although considerable evidence has linked disgust proneness (DP) to obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), few studies have examined the extent to which DP predicts OCD symptoms over time. Further, it remains unclear if DP is a risk factor for the contamination subtype of OCD specifically or if it is prospectively associated with other OCD symptom subtypes. The present study sought to address these gaps in the literature with a large sample of unselected community participants (n = 497) that completed measures of DP and OCD symptoms monthly over a 6-month period. Latent growth analysis revealed

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders (ED) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are highly comorbid, but little is known about how this comorbidity is maintained. Prior research suggests that obsessive thoughts and perfectionism may be shared maintenance factors for EDs and OCD.
METHODS: The current study used network analysis to (1) identify bridge pathways in an ED-OCD comorbidity network and (2) test if perfectionism symptoms bridge between ED-OCD symptoms in a combined network model including ED, OCD, and Perfectionism symptoms. Participants (N = 1,619) were a mixed sample of undergraduate stud

Children and adolescents with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are at increased risk of psychotic disorders; however, the manifestations and clinical implications of psychotic vulnerability among youth with OCD remain poorly understood. To address this gap, we examined the prevalence and clinical correlates of psychotic vulnerability in youth with OCD across two independent samples. Using the Thought Problems Scale of the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), we assessed 215 Scandinavian and 125 North American children and adolescents with OCD. Participants with and without psychotic vulnerabili

OBJECTIVE: Pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and tic disorders (TD) are often associated with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). In order to clarify the role of attention and inhibitory control in pediatric OCD and TD, a continuous performance test (CPT) was administered to a cohort of children and adolescents with OCD alone, TD alone, and OCD+TD.
METHODS: A clinical cohort of 48 children and adolescents with OCD alone (n=20), TD alone (n=15), or OCD+TD (n=13) was interviewed clinically and administered the Conners Continuous Performance Test II (CPT-II). The Conners

BACKGROUND: Shoplifting is a serious problem among patients with eating disorders. For more than a decade, we have treated many patients with eating disorders incarcerated in Hachioji Medical Prison only for repeated shoplifting.
METHODS: We analyzed the prison records and medical records of female psychiatric patients transferred to Hachioji Medical Prison between 2002 and 2011. Based on the offense listed at the time of sentencing, we extracted a shoplifting group and a drug-offense group from among all patients with eating disorders. One patient from the former group who had used substance

The Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS) is the most common measure of Obsessive-Compulsive symptom severity. The Y-BOCS interview is considered gold standard, but its self-rating format is increasingly used in clinical trials. Few studies investigated congruency and potential changes over treatment. This question is highly relevant, as a systematic bias might obscure results of clinical trials. We examined the relationship of self- and clinician-rated Y-BOCS scores in participants with obsessive-compulsive disorder in pre (N = 128), post, (4 weeks, n = 104) and follow-up (6 months,

OBJECTIVE: The use of clozapine or other second generation antipsychotics (SGAs) has been reported to produce obsessive compulsive (OC) symptoms as adverse mental affects. However, it is not yet clear if SGA-induced OC symptoms have the same phenomenological characteristics as those displayed in obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). This study investigated the nature of symptoms and dimensions of SGA-induced OC symptoms in schizophrenia patients, which were then compared with those reported in pure OCD.
METHODS: The study subjects were fifty-one schizophrenia patients with SGA-induced OC sympt

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a clinically heterogenous disorder characterized by temporally stable symptom dimensions. Past inconsistent results from structural neuroimaging studies of OCD may have resulted from the effects of these specific symptom dimensions as well as other socio-demographic and clinical variables upon gray matter (GM) volume.
METHODS: GM volume was measured in 25 adult OCD patients and 20 adult healthy controls using voxel-based morphometry (VBM), controlling for age and total brain GM volume. Univariate and multivariate regression analyses were carr

Exposure techniques are underutilised in the treatment of anxiety disorders in routine practice, but little is known about the use of exposure with response prevention (ERP) for OCD, particularly in youth. The current study aimed to examine the utilisation of ERP for paediatric OCD via an anonymous online survey completed by clinicians (N = 107). Specifically, we explored the association of clinician characteristics and OCD symptom subtypes with ERP use, as well as clinician-reported barriers to ERP implementation. The majority of clinicians reported commonly using ERP when treating youth with

Mental causation takes explanatory priority over evolutionary biology in most accounts of eating disorders. The evolutionary threat of starvation has produced a brain that assists us in the search for food and mental change emerges as a consequence. The major mental causation hypothesis: anxiety causes eating disorders, has been extensively tested and falsified. The subsidiary hypothesis: anxiety and eating disorders are caused by the same genotype, generates inconsistent results because the phenotypes are not traits, but vary along dimensions. Challenging the mental causation hypothesis in Fe

BACKGROUND: Clinical research on the comorbidity of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and other anxiety disorders has largely focused on depression. However in practice, resistant or severe OCD patients not infrequently suffer from a masked or hidden comorbid bipolar disorder.
METHOD: The rate of bipolar comorbidity in OCD was systematically explored among 453 members of the French Association of patients suffering from OCD (AFTOC) as well as a psychiatric sample of OCD out-patients (n=175). As previous research by us has shown the epidemiologic and clinical sample to be similar, we combine

Behavioural disorders are a common feature in dementia, especially in the later stages of the disease. The most frequent disorders are agitation, aggression, paranoid delusions, hallucinations, sleep disorders, including nocturnal wandering, incontinence and (stereotyped) vocalisations or screaming. Behavioural disorders, rather than cognitive disorders, are the main reason why caregivers place patients with dementia in a nursing home. However, although behavioural disorders are important, there is still no international agreement with respect to the description and definition of symptoms and

IMPORTANCE: As coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) spreads across the world, it is critical to understand the psychological factors associated with pandemic-related behaviors. This perspecitve may be especially important to study among adolescents, who are less likely to experience severe symptoms but contribute to the spread of the virus.
OBJECTIVE: To examine psychological factors associated with adolescents' behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This self-reported survey conducted from March 20 to 22, 2020, recruited a population-based sample of adoles

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is an important target for prevention of alcohol-related problems. In this study, we analyzed forensic autopsy cases to reveal the characteristics of the living conditions and death situations of individuals with AUD.
METHODS: We retrospectively investigated 486 cases with a history of alcohol consumption for which a forensic autopsy was performed from 2012 to 2021 in Yamaguchi prefecture. Judgement of AUD was made using DSM-5. Various factors were compared statistically between AUD and non-AUD cases.
RESULTS: Of the 486 cases, 225 (46.2%) were judged t

This study aimed to investigate clinical, demographic, and psychopathological differences between pediatric patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) with and without comorbid neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), focusing on symptom presentation, comorbidities, and functional outcomes. A total of 121 drug-naïve children and adolescents with recent-onset OCD (66 with comorbid NDDs and 55 without) were assessed at the Child and Adolescent Neuropsychiatry Unit of Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital. Participants underwent multidisciplinary clinical evaluations, including structured diagnosti

BACKGROUND: While stressful life events increase the risk of developing a range of psychiatric disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), their ability to precipitate specific obsessive-compulsive symptoms' dimensions is unknown. Here we aimed to evaluate the potential role of three different types of stressful life events, herein termed losses (death of a loved one, termination of a romantic relationship and severe illness) in predicting the speed of progression from subclinical to clinical OCD and the severity of specific OCD dimensions in a large multicentre OCD sample.

BACKGROUND: As overdoses due to opioids rise, medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) continue to be underemployed, resulting in limited access to potentially life-saving treatment. Substance use disorders are prevalent in individuals who are incarcerated, and these individuals are at increased risk for death postrelease due to overdose. Few jails and prisons offer MOUD and most limit access. Extended-release buprenorphine (XR-BUP), a novel monthly injectable MOUD formulation, could be uniquely poised to address treatment access in correctional settings.
METHODS: This study linked a retros
