Acute respiratory tract infections (ARTIs) during the winter months are associated with higher morbidity and mortality compared to other seasons of the year, with children below five, elderly, and immunocompromised patients being the most susceptible. Influenza A and B viruses, rhinovirus, coronaviruses, respiratory syncytial virus, adenovirus, and parainfluenza viruses, are the most frequently identified causes of viral ARTIs. In addition, the emergence of SARS-CoV-2 in 2019 provided an additional viral cause of ARTIs. The aim of this study was to provide an overview of the epidemiological st

Lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) are the most common cause for going to the doctor's at pediatric age. Respiratory infections are still of interest because they are widespread, significantly impact public health by potentially leading to pandemics, drive antimicrobial resistance through antibiotic misuse, more often spread globally due to traveling, and benefit from ongoing advancements in diagnostics and research for better management. This paper's main aim was to offer a systematic review of the literature published over the last 10 years on the etiology of LRTIs. The search strate

The aim of our study was to define the spectrum of viral infections in pilgrims with acute respiratory tract illnesses presenting to healthcare facilities around the holy places in Makkah, Saudi Arabia during the 2019 Hajj pilgrimage. During the five days of Hajj, a total of 185 pilgrims were enrolled in the study. Nasopharyngeal swabs (NPSs) of 126/185 patients (68.11%) tested positive for one or more respiratory viruses by PCR. Among the 126 pilgrims whose NPS were PCR positive: (a) there were 93/126 (74%) with a single virus infection, (b) 33/126 (26%) with coinfection with more than one vi

Single gene defects that impair lymphocyte cytotoxicity can predispose to severe viral infection that normally remains subclinical. The classic severe presentation is hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis. Here, we report the case of a neonate who presented with cytomegalovirus palatal ulceration and bocavirus pneumonitis secondary to impaired cytotoxicity caused by biallelic mutations in the UNC13D gene.

Active surveillance of livestock pathogens is essential to prevent animal health losses and zoonotic spillover. This study evaluted aggregated environmental sampling as a non-invasive approach for monitoring swine- and cattle-associated viruses across farms and slaughterhouses, bridging the gap between agricultural biosecurity and public health. Over eleven months, 105 samples, including swine slurry, cattle manure, farm air, and slaughterhouse wastewater, were collected and analyzed using pathogen-specific (RT) qPCR and targeted viral metagenomics. Seasonal and sample patterns were evident, w

BACKGROUND: The epidemiology of pediatric acute respiratory infections (ARIs) changed substantially during the COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) pandemic, largely because of school closures, masking, reduced travel, and other non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs). However, hospital-based data from the restriction period remain useful for describing pathogen detection patterns, clinical severity, and markers of adverse clinical course.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective hospital-based study of 62 children aged <18 years who were evaluated for ARI symptoms and underwent real-time fluores

UNLABELLED: Human bocaviruses (HBoVs) may be grouped into respiratory (HBoV1) and enteric (HBoV2-4) types. We examined this association of HBoV types and clinical symptoms in 955 children who had acute gastroenteritis (AGE, n = 172), acute respiratory tract infection (ARTI, n = 545) or symptoms of both (n = 238). Both nasal swab and stool specimens were studied for such patients. HBoV1 DNA was detected in 6.2 % of patients with ARTI and 9.2 % of patients with symptoms of both ARTI and AGE, but in only 1.7 % of patients with AGE alone. In about one half of the cases, HBoV1 was detected concomit

BACKGROUND: Human rhinoviruses (HRVs) are a highly prevalent cause of acute respiratory infection in children. They are classified into at least three species, HRV-A, HRV-B and HRV-C, which are characterized by sequencing the 5' untranslated region (UTR) or the VP4/VP2 region of the genome. Given the increased interest for novel HRV strain identification and their worldwide distribution, we have carried out clinical and molecular diagnosis of HRV strains in a 2-year study of children with acute respiratory infection visiting one district hospital in Shanghai.
METHODOLOGY/FINDINGS: We cloned a
