After 70 years of fighting an age-old scourge, onchocerciasis in Uganda, the end is in sight.

Onchocerciasis causes severe itching, serious skin disease and ocular damage leading to visual impairment or permanent blindness. It is associated with hanging groin, epilepsy, Nakalanga dwarfism and, most recently, nodding disease. This disease affected communities in 17 transmission foci in 37 districts of Uganda, where about 6.7 million people are once at risk. The efforts against onchocerciasis in Uganda commenced in the late 1940s, when vector control was launched using dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane; by 1973, Simulium damnosum had been eliminated in the Victoria focus. Success outside o

Effectiveness of Fipronil as a Systemic Control Agent Against Xenopsylla cheopis (Siphonaptera: Pulicidae) in Madagascar.

Fipronil was evaluated as a systemic control agent for the rat flea Xenopsylla cheopis (Rothschild), the main vector of Yersinia pestis (Yersin), the causative agent of plague, in Madagascar. The effectiveness of fipronil as a systemic control agent against X. cheopis was assessed by determining the toxicity values of the "Lethal Dose 50" (LD50). Two techniques were used to evaluate the systemic action of the insecticide on the vector: 1) an artificial feeding device filled with blood-fipronil mixture from which X. cheopis was fed and 2) rodent hosts, Rattus norvegicus (Berkenhout) and Rattus

[The beginning of Chagas disease control (homage to Dr. Emmanuel Dias, the pioneer of Chagas disease control, in the year of his birth centenary)].

Very soon Carlos Chagas took into account the need of trypanosomiasis control, considering its great social impact and geographical dispersion The vector was considered the more vulnerable target and housing improvement the basic strategy to face the disease. In parallel, it was required a more clinical visibility for the disease, as an argument for its control. The first concrete tentative occurred in 1918 when Souza Araújo dedicating his efforts in Paraná, trying housing improvement. He was followed by Ezequiel Dias et al, in 1921, employing chemical compounds against the vector, The chemica

Control of phlebotomine sandflies in confined spaces using diffusible repellents and insecticides.

The control of phlebotomine sandflies (Diptera: Psychodidae), the vectors of leishmaniasis, is directed mostly against adults as larvae develop in unknown or inaccessible habitats. In the current study we tested geraniol, a natural plant-derived product, as a space repellent and the synthetic pyrethroid prallethrin as a diffusible insecticide. Geraniol was dispersed in the air using diffusers with an electric fan and prallethrin was evaporated using electrically heated evaporators. Both substances were tested in inhabited bedrooms and in tents. Geraniol failed to effect significant reductions

Special intervention zones.

The Special Intervention Zones (SIZ) of the former Onchocerciasis Control Programme (OCP) were launched in December 2002, following the closure of the OCP, to sustain the momentum that had been gained for onchocerciasis control through Mectizan distribution and vector control. The donation of Mectizan in 1987 was fortuitous for the OCP, as vector control had become costly and ineffective in certain areas. Mectizan distribution benefitted the populations affected by onchocerciasis, who saw improvements to their health. When the SIZ were launched, Mectizan distribution became the primary strateg

Faunistic study of sandflies in Greece.

A faunistic study of phlebotomine sandflies was carried out on the mainland and on four islands in Greece between 1999 and 2004. Sandflies were collected in 18 areas, and the population structure was observed and recorded. A total of 10 species were identified; their distribution is presented here. Of these, the species Phlebotomus neglectus Tonnoir and P. perfiliewi Parrot (Diptera: Psychodidae), epidemiologically the most important vectors of leishmaniases and sandfly fever in Greece, were shown to be present in the main endemic foci of the country.

Uptake of Onchocerca volvulus (Nematoda: Onchocercidae) by Simulium (Diptera: Simuliidae) is not strongly dependent on the density of skin microfilariae in the human host.

The relation between the number of microfilariae (mf) ingested by host-seeking vectors of human onchocerciasis and skin mf load is an important component of the population biology of Onchocerca volvulus, with implications for disease control and evaluation of the risk of transmission recrudescence. The microsimulation model ONCHOSIM has been used to assess such risk in the area of the Onchocerciasis Control Program (OCP) in West Africa, based on a strongly nonlinear relation between vector mf uptake and human mf skin density previously published. However, observed levels of recrudescence have

A simple method to identify triatomine (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) feces in sensing devices used in vector surveillance programs.

We successfully applied the phenolphthalin (Kastle-Meyer) test used in forensic chemistry to distinguish between feces from triatomines and other domestic arthropods in sensing devices used for vector surveillance. All black or dark brown, but not white or yellow, fecal smears from laboratory-reared or field-collected Triatoma infestans Klug, Triatoma guasayana Wydgozinsky & Abalos, Triatoma sordida Ståhl (recently revalidated as Triatoma garciabesi Carcavallo, Cichero, Martínez, Prosen & Ronderos) tested positive, whereas dejecta from cockroaches and spiders, crickets, beetles, predatory bugs

Pool screen polymerase chain reaction for estimating the prevalence of Onchocerca volvulus infection in Simulium damnosum sensu lato: results of a field trial in an area subject to successful vector control.

Detection of infective parasites in the vector population can be an early indicator of recrudescence in areas freed of new cases of onchocerciasis. However, dissection of vector black flies is inefficient in areas subject to effective control. Recently, a polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based assay has been used to detect a single Onchocerca volvulus-infected black fly in pools containing large numbers of uninfected flies. This method had not been validated on wild-caught black flies in an area subject to effective vector control. Here, we report a method of restricting the pool screen PCR ass

Vector control in some countries of Southeast Asia: comparing the vectors and the strategies.

The use of information on malaria vector behaviour in vector control is discussed in relation to the area of Southeast Asia comprising Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam. The major vectors in the region are Anopheles dirus, An. minimus, An. maculatus and An. sundaicus, of which An. dirus is the most important. Options for vector control and the biological features of mosquitoes, which would make them amenable to control by these measures, are listed. The methods with the greatest potential for controlling each of the four vector species are described. Experiences of vector control b

Epidemiological impact of vector control. I. Incidence and changes in prevalence and intensity of Onchocerca volvulus infection.

Since 1974, the Onchocerciasis Control Programme (OCP) has been engaged in a large scale attempt to control the savanna species of the vector of onchocerciasis in seven West African countries. The effect of the vector control effort has been measured by epidemiological evaluation. For this purpose 474 villages have been examined by means of skin snip surveys between 1975 and 1983 and of these, 184 have been retained to-date for follow-up surveys which have documented over the years the reduction of the parasite population. The latest results of the epidemiological evaluation clearly demonstrat

Eliminating malaria vectors with precision-guided sterile males.

Controlling the principal African malaria vector, the mosquito Anopheles gambiae, is considered essential to curtail malaria transmission. However, existing vector control technologies rely on insecticides, which are becoming increasingly ineffective. Sterile insect technique (SIT) is a powerful suppression approach that has successfully eradicated a number of insect pests, yet the A. gambiae toolkit lacks the requisite technologies for its implementation. SIT relies on iterative mass releases of nonbiting, nondriving, sterile males which seek out and mate with monandrous wild females. Once ma

CRISPR/Cas9-mediated Nap knockout affects female reproduction and egg shape in Bombyx mori.

Insect reproductive capacity can affect effective pest control and infertility studies and has become an important focus in recent molecular genetic research. Nucleosome assembly protein (Nap) is highly conserved across multiple species and is involved in forming the sperm nucleus in many species. We used clustered regularly interspaced palindromic repeats/Cas9 technology to knockout BmNap in Bombyx mori and observed that the mutations caused female infertility, whereas male fertility was not affected. BmNap mutants grew and mated normally; however, female mutants laid smaller eggs that could

Metarhizium anisopliae enzymes and toxins.

Entomopathogenic fungi are both a feasible system for the control of insect pests in agriculture with a growing market and an important model for studies of host-pathogen interaction. In the last ten years the actual use of fungi, mainly Metarhizium anisopliae and Beauveria bassiana, is increasing reaching commercial scale in Countries like Brazil, China and Mexico among others. At the same time important progress has occurred in the understanding of the molecular aspects of the pathogenesis and in the development of tools to validate putative virulence factors by the construction of over-expr

Determination of Arsenic Species in Edible Insects by LC-ICP-MS.

BACKGROUND: Edible insects may contain arsenic. Analysis of arsenic species is necessary in order to accurately assess arsenic exposure. OBJECTIVE: An analytical method was validated and used to determine and quantitate arsenic species in edible insects. METHODS: Arsenic species were extracted from edible insects by heating at 100°C in 0.3 mol/L nitric acid. The concentration of arsenic species was then determined by LC-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LC-ICP-MS) using an octadecylsilane (ODS) column with a mobile phase containing an ion-pair reagent. RESULTS: The LOD (0.007-0.

Susceptibility of the invasive malaria vector Anopheles stephensi in Ethiopia to novel chemical insecticides and insect growth regulator.

The presence of invasive Anopheles stephensi has been confirmed from field studies in several urban, peri-urban and rural areas of Ethiopia. Recent studies have shown that these mosquitoes are resistant to common public health insecticides, namely pyrethroids (deltamethrin, permethrin, and alpha-cypermethrin), Carbamates (bendiocarb and propoxur), and organophosphates (pirimiphos-methyl). This study aimed to assess the susceptibility of populations of An. stephensi from Ethiopia to novel chemical insecticides recently recommended for vector control, namely, broflanilide (a meta-diamide targeti

The esperanza window trap reduces the human biting rate of Simulium ochraceum s.l. in formerly onchocerciasis endemic foci in Southern Mexico.

BACKGROUND: The Esperanza Window Trap (EWT) baited with CO2 and human sweat compounds is attractive to Simulium ochraceum s.l., the primary vector of Onchocerca volvulus in the historically largest endemic foci in México and Guatemala. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: The ability of the EWT to locally reduce numbers of questing S. ochraceum s.l. was evaluated in two formerly onchocerciasis endemic communities in Southern México. At each community, two EWTs were placed in or near a school or household and flies were collected sequentially for a total of 10 days. Black fly collections were then

Molecular identification of Lutzomyia migonei (Diptera: Psychodidae) as a potential vector for Leishmania infantum (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae).

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in Brazil is caused by the protozoan Leishmania infantum. This parasite is transmitted by the bite of a female sand fly. The most important sand fly species in VL transmission is Lutzomyia longipalpis. In Fortaleza, the capital of Ceará State, Brazil, the simultaneous occurrence of Lutzomyia migonei and L. longipalpis was detected in localities where VL transmission is observed. The purpose of this study was to determine conclusively if L. migonei can be found naturally infected with L. infantum in key focus in Fortaleza. Using a CDC traps we performed phlebotomine
