Knowledge about sandflies in relation to public and domestic control activities of kala-azar in rural endemic areas of Bihar.

Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) control is a global cause of concern. To identify the gaps in People's knowledge/awareness about sand flies and control activities of kala-azar in rural endemic areas of Bihar, this study consisting of 450 respondents with 288 male and 162 female was carried out. The result showed that 95% respondents had heard about the disease up to some extent, but majority respondents were neither aware about the vector of kala-azar, nor they had any idea about transmission of the disease. About 61% had wrong impression that mosquitoes were causing kala-azar. Regarding knowledge

Contributions of Anopheles larval control to malaria suppression in tropical Africa: review of achievements and potential.

Malaria vector control targeting the larval stages of mosquitoes was applied successfully against many species of Anopheles (Diptera: Culicidae) in malarious countries until the mid-20th Century. Since the introduction of DDT in the 1940s and the associated development of indoor residual spraying (IRS), which usually has a more powerful impact than larval control on vectorial capacity, the focus of malaria prevention programmes has shifted to the control of adult vectors. In the Afrotropical Region, where malaria is transmitted mainly by Anopheles funestus Giles and members of the Anopheles ga

Reasons for low long-lasting insecticide-treated net use and repurposing: qualitative study from southern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) are the main vector control tools and remain protective against malaria, even in the presence of high pyrethroid resistance. However, in sub-Saharan Africa, the estimated percentage of the population sleeping under LLINs is low. Hence, this qualitative study was conducted to explore perceptions about LLINs and the reasons for low LLIN use in southern Ethiopia. METHODS: Qualitative cross-sectional study was conducted in southern Ethiopia. Study areas were selected based on low LLIN use following a quantitative survey. Seven focus group discuss

A comparative analysis of the predictive influence of access to malaria messages on utilization of mosquito nets by under-five children in West Africa.

INTRODUCTION: In spite of the increase in the number of distributed mosquito nets, and awareness campaigns on its efficacy in malaria control in sub-Saharan Africa with high burden of malaria, there is a dearth of study on the effects of malaria messages on use of mosquito nets by under-five children (U5 children). Thus, the objectives of this study were to compare the use of mosquito nets by under-five children in four West African countries; and to investigate the predictive influence of exposure to malaria messages on the use of mosquito nets U5 children. METHOD: The data was from post-202

Analysis of the potential for a malaria vaccine to reduce gaps in malaria intervention coverage.

BACKGROUND: The RTS,S/AS01 malaria vaccine is currently being evaluated in a cluster-randomized pilot implementation programme in three African countries. This study seeks to identify whether vaccination could reach additional children who are at risk from malaria but do not currently have access to, or use, core malaria interventions. METHODS: Using data from household surveys, the overlap between malaria intervention coverage and childhood vaccination (diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis dose 3, DTP3) uptake in 20 African countries with at least one first administrative level unit with Plasmodium

Risk factors and pregnancy outcomes associated with placental malaria in a prospective cohort of Papua New Guinean women.

BACKGROUND: Plasmodium falciparum in pregnancy results in substantial poor health outcomes for both mother and child, particularly in young, primigravid mothers who are at greatest risk of placental malaria (PM) infection. Complications of PM include maternal anaemia, low birth weight and preterm delivery, which contribute to maternal and infant morbidity and mortality in coastal Papua New Guinea (PNG). METHODS: Placental biopsies were examined from 1451 pregnant women who were enrolled in a malaria prevention study at 14-26 weeks gestation. Clinical and demographic information were collected

Efficacy and Safety of Azithromycin-Chloroquine versus Sulfadoxine-Pyrimethamine for Intermittent Preventive Treatment of Plasmodium falciparum Malaria Infection in Pregnant Women in Africa: An Open-Label, Randomized Trial.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization recommends intermittent preventive treatment in pregnancy (IPTp) with sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP) in African regions with moderate to high malaria transmission. However, growing resistance to SP threatens the effectiveness of IPTp-SP, and alternative drugs are needed. This study tested the efficacy, tolerability, and safety of a fixed-dose combination azithromycin-chloroquine (AZCQ; 250 mg AZ/155 mg CQ base) for IPTp relative to IPTp-SP. METHODS AND FINDINGS: A randomized, Phase 3, open-label, multi-center study was conducted in sub-Saharan Africa

Insecticide-treated materials for malaria control in Latin America: to use or not to use?

Studies on the protective efficacy of insecticide-treated materials (ITMs) in Plasmodium vivax endemic areas of Latin America have not yielded sufficient evidence for recommendation of their extensive use in the region. Therefore 2 randomized community trials have been conducted on the Pacific Coast of Nicaragua which analysed the minimum coverage of ITMs needed to be effective against malaria. For the characterization of the study area, epidemiological and entomological baseline surveys and household interview surveys were undertaken. Thereafter the communities were paired (6 pairs in the 1st

Where is the hard-to-reach population? Spatial analysis from a cross-sectional study on the access to bed net and malaria vaccine in the Lake Victoria Region, Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLIN) and vaccines are effective malaria control tools. However, inadequate uptake has been reported in countries where both interventions are available. To maximize the impact these tools provide, it is crucial to identify populations that are not being reached and the barriers to uptake. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study conducted in April 2024 in Kanyamwa Kologi Ward in Homa Bay County, Kenya, 4,662 households in 58 randomely selected villages were visited and interviewed. The proportions of households that (1) received at least one new LLIN wi

Factors associated with insecticide-treated mosquito nets utilization for malaria prevention in Burkina Faso: finding from cross-sectional household survey.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization recommends insecticide-treated mosquito nets (ITNs) as one of the main interventions to control malaria spread. The leading driver of this intervention is use of ITN; however, socio-demographic characteristics factors, access and possession of ITN could also influence its usage. Therefore, the present study aimed to document the factors associated with using ITNs to eliminate malaria in Burkina Faso. This study's findings would be useful to the National Malaria Control Programme and other stakeholders engaged in the promotion of ITNs to fight malaria c

The Equatoguinean Malaria Vaccine Initiative: From the Launching of a Clinical Research Platform to Malaria Elimination Planning in Central West Africa.

Fifteen years of investment in malaria control on Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea (EG), dramatically reduced malaria-associated morbidity and mortality, but the impact has plateaued. To progress toward elimination, EG is investing in the development of a malaria vaccine. We assessed the unique public-private partnership that has had such a significant impact on malaria on Bioko Island and now added a major effort on malaria vaccine development. As part of a $79M commitment, the EG government (75%) and three American energy companies (25%) have invested since 2012 greater than $55M in the Equat

Wash-resistance and field efficacy of Olyset net, a permethrin-incorporated long-lasting insecticidal netting, against Anopheles minimus-transmitted malaria in Assam, Northeastern India.

INTRODUCTION: The long-lasting insecticidal nets are ready-to-use, pretreated nets, which do not require retreatment for 4-5 years. Olyset nets that are made of high-density polyethylene monofilament yarn with 2% w/w permethrin incorporated (corresponding to 1 g/m(2)) are type-2 in which insecticide is incorporated into the polymers and are wash resistant. In these, insecticide migrates to the surface of the netting fiber to be bioavailable against mosquitoes and other insect pests. STUDY SITE AND OBJECTIVES: The present study was a village scale, field-based trial that was conducted in Plasmo

Insecticide-treated nets for the prevention of malaria in pregnancy: a systematic review of randomised controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Protection from malaria with insecticide-treated bednets (ITNs) during pregnancy is widely advocated, but evidence of benefit has been inconsistent. We undertook a systematic review of randomised trials. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Three cluster-randomised and two individually randomised trials met the inclusion criteria; four from Africa (n = 6,418) and one from Thailand (n = 223). In Africa, ITNs compared to no nets increased mean birth weight by 55 g (95% confidence interval [CI] 21-88), reduced low birth weight by 23% (relative risk [RR] 0.77, 95% CI 0.61-0.98), and reduced miscarri
