Fresh Japanese plums are highly perishable and susceptible to postharvest diseases caused by fungal pathogens. Current management strategies rely on synthetic fungicides, raising concerns about resistance and sustainability. Immature-thinned apples (ITA), an underutilized agricultural by-product, are rich in polyphenols with potential antifungal properties. This study evaluated the potential of ITA ultrasound-assisted extracts of the cultivars 'Gala', 'Golden Delicious', and 'Opal' for controlling plum postharvest diseases. Extracts were chemically characterized for total polyphenol content an

The tyrosinase inhibitory activity and inhibition mechanism of pyrimidine-2-thiol (PT) and pyrimidine-2,4-dithiol (PDT) were investigated. In the anti-tyrosinase activity evaluation assay, PT exhibited 2-fold stronger activity than kojic acid in the presence of L-Tyrosine and L-Dopa, and PDT showed 13 times higher activity than kojic acid, respectively. Kinetic analysis revealed PT and PDT acted as mixed inhibitors. Copper ions chelation, fluorescence quenching, 1H NMR titration, and molecular docking assays manifested PT and PDT could participate in chelation with copper ions in the tyrosinas

Vitamin D plays a crucial role in bone, immunology, and neurophysiological functions but has inadequate bioavailability in the human body. In this paper, six different liquid beverages were used for vitamin D3 fortification, investigating the effect of different food matrices on the bioaccessibility of vitamin D. Not from concentrate (NFC) apple juice (9.34%) and NFC orange juice (8.12%) presented about 20% higher bioaccessibility of vitamin D3 than soybean and skim milk, and achieved a similar value of whole milk (8.04%). Meanwhile, the bioaccessibility of NFC apple and orange juice was marke

Powdery mildew (PM), caused by the biotrophic fungus Podospharea leucotricha, is a major threat to apple production. Plant-plant communication (PPC) is a crucial strategy for plant communities to enhance their defence against pathogens. The interconversion of methyl salicylate (MeSA) and salicylic acid (SA) is critical for PPC regulation, but the mechanism of MeSA-mediated PPC is not fully understood. This study reveals a significant increase in SA and MeSA levels in neighbouring plants (receivers) following PM attack on emitter plants, activating defence responses in receivers. Notably, the e

Inorganic phosphate (Pi) starvation severely affects the normal growth and development of plants. Here, a Pi-responsive gene, named MdMYB2 (MDP0000823458), was cloned and functionally identified in apple. Overexpression of MdMYB2 regulated the expression of Pi starvation-induced (PSI) genes and then promoted phosphate assimilation and utilization. The ectopic expression of MdMYB2 in Arabidopsis influenced plant growth and flowering, which was partially rescued by application of exogenous gibberellin (GA). These results indicated that MdMYB2 may be an essential regulator in phosphate utilizatio

An outbreak of listeriosis in late 2014 and early 2015 associated with caramel apples led to questions about how this product became a vector for Listeria monocytogenes. This investigation aimed to determine information about the survival and growth of L. monocytogenes in both fresh apples and caramel apples, specifically examining the effects of site and level of inoculation, inoculum drying conditions, and storage temperature. At a high inoculation level (7 log CFU per apple), L. monocytogenes inoculated at the stem end proliferated on Gala caramel apples at both 5 and 25°C and on Granny Smi

All aphid species studied so far share the same sex pheromone components, nepetalactol and nepetalactone. Variation by different enantiomers and blends of the two components released by different aphid species are limited and can only partially explain species-specific attraction of males to females. While some host-plant odours are known to enhance specific attraction of aphid species, herbivore-induced plant volatiles that synergise attractiveness to the sex pheromone are unknown. Here, we demonstrate that for the host-alternating rosy apple aphid (Dysaphis plantaginea (Passerini)) specifici

The red bud borer Resseliella oculiperda (Rübs.) is a pest insect of apple trees when rootstocks are grafted with scion buds by 'shield budding'. The female midges are attracted to the wounds of the grafted buds where they lay their eggs. The larvae feed on the cambium and destroy the buds completely or partially, leading to bad union of the buds with the rootstocks. Budding strips are used very often by growers to bind scion buds to rootstocks. These strips cannot prevent midges from reaching the damaged tissue. Chemical treatments applied to the grafts and other types of strip do not provide

A novel reactor is described with flow characteristics that approach that of ideal plug flow but with a residence time that is uncoupled from the hydrodynamics or boundary layer characteristics. The design described consists of an inner cylinder that rotates within a stationary but larger outer cylinder. At low rotation rates, a laminar, hydrodynamic configuration called Taylor-Couette flow is established, which consists of a system of circumferential vortices within the annular fluid gap. The latter constitutes a spatially periodic flow that is the hydrodynamic equivalent to cross flow over a

The 2021 summer heat waves experienced in the Pacific Northwest led to considerable fruit damage in many apple production zones. Sunburn browning (SB) was a particularly evident symptom. To understand the mechanism underlying the damage and to facilitate the early assessment of compromised fruit quality, we conducted a study on external characteristics and internal quality attributes of SB 'Ambrosia' apple (Malus domestica var. Ambrosia) and evaluated the fruit loss on five rootstocks. The cell integrity of the epidermal and hypodermal layers of fruit skins in the SB patch was compromised. Spe

The continuous deposition of cutin and wax during leaf and fruit growth is crucial to alleviate elastic strain of the cuticle, minimize the risk of failure and maintain its barrier functions. The cuticular membrane (CM) is a lipoidal biopolymer that covers primary surfaces of terrestrial plants. CMs have barrier functions in water and solute transfer and pathogen invasion. These require intact CMs throughout growth. This is a challenge particularly for fruit, because they increase in area from initiation through to maturity. Our paper investigates the effects of cutin and wax deposition on str

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a multifactorial inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) with increasing incidence worldwide. Current treatments, including NSAIDs and corticosteroids, provide partial symptom relief but are associated with significant side effects, highlighting the need for novel therapies with improved safety profiles. Given the role of oxidative stress and inflammation in driving tissue damage during colitis, natural compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties represent promising therapeutic candidates. Thinned apples (TA), an agricultural byproduct, were identified as a

This study presents the development and evaluation of a novel support-free plate bioreactor (SFPB) for immobilization of pectinase and its application in apple juice clarification. The SFPB was developed as an alternative to the conventional packed-bed bioreactor to address operational limitations when comparing at an equal surface area. Pectinase was covalently immobilized on the inner glass surface using 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane and glutaraldehyde. The immobilization efficiency in the SFPB was 2.38 times higher than in the PBB. The immobilized enzyme retained approximately 70% of its in

Anthocyanins are crucial secondary metabolites in apple, which determine the commercial value of the fruit and confer essential protection against environmental stresses. Their biosynthesis is governed by a complex network of structural and regulatory genes, modulated by developmental cues, environmental factors, and phytohormone signaling. Emerging evidence highlights gibberellins (GAs) as pivotal regulators of anthocyanin accumulation in apple. Here, we review the current understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying gibberellin (GA)-mediated anthocyanin biosynthesis. We specifically

Commercially cultivated Prunus species are commonly grown in adjacent or mixed orchards and can be infected with unique or commonly shared viruses. Apple (Malus domestica), another member of the Rosacea and distantly related to Prunus, can share the same growing regions and common pathogens. Pollen can be a major route for virus transmission, and analysis of the pollen virome in tree fruit orchards can provide insights into these virus pathogen complexes from mixed production sites. Commercial honey bee (Apis mellifera) pollination is essential for improved fruit sets and yields in tree fruit
