Biochemical changes after strenuous exercise - data from the Kalmar Ironman Strenuous and prolonged exercise like marathon, ultra running and triathlon can lead to changes in biomarkers of cardiac, muscle and kidney functional damage. We present the data of 30 (15 men, 15 women) participants of the Kalmar Ironman 2015. Pre-race electrocardiograms and echocardiograms showed a high frequency of abnormalities. Post race elevations of troponin T, creatine kinase, myoglobin, N-terminal prohormone of brain natriuretic peptide, and creatinine returned to normal in almost all cases within 5-8 days. In

Running is associated with a higher risk of overuse injury than other forms of aerobic exercise such as walking, swimming and cycling. An accurate description of the proportion of running injuries per anatomical location and where possible, per specific pathology, for both genders is required. The aim of this review was to determine the proportion of lower limb running injuries by anatomical location and by specific pathology in male and female runners (≥800m - ≤ marathon). The preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses guidelines were followed for this review. A litera

Sacral stress fractures (SSFs) in physically active young patients are frequently misdiagnosed due to the lack of specificity of signs and symptoms. Over the last years, these injuries have been described as rare, although some studies report that the incidence of an SSF in athletes may be as high as 20%.We describe a case of a male long-distance runner in his late 20s with a 1-month undiagnosed SSF. The patient complaints included insidious right low back and buttock pain without trauma that started after running a marathon. MRI revealed an extensive area of bone marrow oedema in the right sa

BACKGROUND: Sports activity has become extremely popular among amateurs. Electrocardiography is a useful tool in screening for cardiac pathologies in athletes; however, there is little data on electrocardiographic abnormalities in the group of amateur athletes.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to analyze the abnormalities in resting and exercise electrocardiograms (ECGs) in a group of amateur athletes, and try to determine whether the criteria applied for the general population or for athletes' ECGs should be implemented in this group.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In 40 amateur male marathon r

OBJECTIVES: To study the effects of running with/without the use of pain killers on urinary neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (uNGAL) and other parameters of kidney function in recreational runners.
METHODS: Participants of the 10- and 21.1-km Weir Venloop race were enrolled and their urine samples collected before and after the run. Urine dipstick and other conventional tests used to assess kidney function were performed. The presence of ibuprofen, diclofenac, naproxen, and/or paracetamol was assessed by LC-MS/MS. uNGAL was measured with a two-step chemiluminescent immunoassay.

BACKGROUND: Muscle tightness (MT) is believed to be an important cause of injury for runners. This study evaluated the change of serum creatine kinase (CK), MT in the leg muscles, and delayed onset muscle soreness after running.
METHODS: We evaluated 11 college students who completed a full marathon race. Participants completed a questionnaire on the right quadriceps muscle soreness. The CK activity and MT (iliopsoas, rectus femoris, hamstrings, gastrocnemius, and soleus muscles) were measured. The time points for CK measurements were before; immediately after; and at 1, 2, and 5 days after t

Ultramarathon participation is growing in popularity and exposes runners to unique stressors including extreme temperatures, high altitude, and exceedingly long exercise duration. However, the acute effects of ultramarathon participation on the cardiovascular system are not well understood. To determine the acute effects of trail ultramarathon participation on central artery stiffness and hemodynamics, 41 participants (9 F, 32 M) participating in the 2023 Western States Endurance Run underwent measures of carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cf-PWV) and pulse wave analysis pre- and <1 h post-r

Objective. The association between muscle damage and skin temperature is controversial. We hypothesize that including metrics that are more sensitive to individual responses by considering variability and regions representative of higher temperature could influence skin temperature outcomes. Here, the objective of the study was to determine whether using alternative metrics (TMAX, entropy, and pixelgraphy) leads to different results than mean, maximum, minimum, and standard deviation (SD) skin temperature when addressing muscle damage using infrared thermography.Approach.Thermal images from fou

A 48-year-old athletic man with history of dyslipidemia and second-degree atrioventricular block (Mobitz type I 2:1 atrioventricular block) endorses sleep-related difficulties at his annual physical examination. Mobitz type I block was diagnosed 11 years earlier when the patient presented to his primary care physician with left-sided chest pain for 2 months. He was evaluated by cardiology, with a normal stress echocardiogram. The impression was that the chest pain was nonanginal. He describes sleeping for only a few hours at a time and has nighttime awakenings. He does not wake up feeling refr

The 15th Dutch Eleven Cities ice skating marathon was run on Saturday 4th January 1997. Numerous measures were taken to reduce the risk of accidents: active or standby were 7 hospitals, 3 helicopters for transport of casualties, 60 first-aid stations along the route, 600 first-aiders, 120 Red Cross workers, 50 GPs, 10 diving teams and a large police presence. A total of 150 ambulance rides were made and 151 skaters with 179 injuries were treated in the hospitals. The number of treatments administered in the first-aid stations was 2393 (14.3% of the total number of participants), including 829

BACKGROUND: Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) in older individuals is often attributed to coronary artery disease and is rare in otherwise healthy individuals with good functional status.
CASE SUMMARY: A healthy marathon runner experienced SCA during a race and was found to have severe undiagnosed coronary artery disease. He underwent percutaneous coronary intervention with a drug-eluting stent and made a full recovery.
DISCUSSION: The incidence of SCA during long-distance running is 1 per 184,000 participants. Older individuals may have undiagnosed coronary artery disease as the underlying cause

BACKGROUND: Recent studies indicate a protective role of vitamin D supplementation against sports performance-induced dysregulation of body homeostasis. However, the effects of a single high dose of vitamin D on changes in bone formation and resorption markers due to ultramarathon running have yet to be explored. This study aimed to analyze the effect of a single high-dose vitamin D supplementation on serum levels of bone turnover markers after a mountain ultramarathon run.
METHODS: In this clinical trial (reg. number NCT03417700), 35 semiprofessional male ultramarathon runners were assigned

Lack of physical exercise is considered an important risk factor for chronic diseases. On the contrary, physical exercise reduces the morbidity rates of obesity, diabetes, bone disease, and hypertension. In order to gain novel molecular and cellular clues, we analyzed the effects of physical exercise on differentiation of mesenchymal circulating progenitor cells (M-CPCs) obtained from runners. We also investigated autophagy and telomerase-related gene expression to evaluate the involvement of specific cellular functions in the differentiation process. We performed cellular and molecular analys

Ultra-endurance running imposes extreme demands on oxygen transport, yet how red blood cells (RBCs) respond at the molecular level remains poorly defined. We integrated plasma and RBC multi-omics with hematology and hemorheology in athletes sampled before and after two trail races of distinct duration: a 40-km marathon (MCC) and a 171-km ultramarathon (UTMB). Both races elicited systemic inflammation, but UTMB was distinguished by marked IL-6 and kynurenine increases, acute-phase protein induction, and profound lipid remodeling. In RBCs, acylcarnitine accumulation, pantothenate depletion, and

Stress fractures of femoral neck are rare injuries and are usually seen in military recruits, marathon runners, and elderly with osteoporosis, renal rickets, steroid abuse, and metabolic bone diseases. Bilateral involvement of femoral neck in a healthy, non-athletic young adult is an extremely rare entity. We report one such case of a 36-year-old male who presented with bilateral groin pain for last three months. He had a history of excessive running prior to the onset of pain. The investigations confirmed bilateral stress fracture of the femoral neck, and the patient was operated with dynamic
