From the aforementioned study, the following conclusions can be stated: (1) Patients ranged from 2 to 15 years of age, with no one age group being more susceptible to facial fractures. This fact is contrary to previous findings. (2) No true orbital blow-out fractures were found in patients less thn 7 years of age, primarily because of the lack of maxillary sinus development in that age group. The most rapid development of the maxillary sinus occurs between the ages of 7 to 15 years. (3) In patients from 2 to 7 years of age, fractures occurred at an even ratio of boys and girls. From 8 to 15 ye

A 5-year review of facial fractures and concomitant injuries at a level 1 trauma center is presented. The anatomic location of the facial fractures, age and sex of the patients, cause of injury, and associated systems injuries are presented. The majority of facial fractures were found in males; the most prevalent age range was 16 to 30 years. Mandible fractures outranked zygomatic and maxillary fractures (6:2:1). Assaults and motor vehicle accidents were the most frequent causes of facial fractures, and lacerations followed by neurologic and orthopedic injury were the most frequently encounter

Le Fort I fractures with concurrent palatal fractures are rare, necessitating precise stabilization of facial buttresses to restore function and aesthetics. Conventional management includes maxillary open reduction and internal fixation combined with intermaxillary fixation. However, palatal fractures pose additional challenges, particularly during masseter muscle contraction, often resulting in dental arch widening. Lingual splints are commonly utilized to stabilize the dental structures and prevent dental arch widening, but traditional acrylic splint fabrication is time-consuming. In this st

OBJECTIVE: To describe and evaluate transsinus reduction and one-point miniplate fixation of the zygomaticomaxillary buttress for the treatment of tripod malar fractures.
DESIGN: A consecutive case series.
SETTING: Private otolaryngology practice.
PATIENTS: A consecutive sample of 17 patients presenting with isolated tripod malar fractures over a 42-month period.
INTERVENTION: A gingivobuccal sulcus incision is made. Access into the maxillary sinus was obtained through an invariably comminuted inferior fracture line. The zygoma was reduced by applying lateral and anterior traction force to

BACKGROUND: Few reports have described the ophthalmic complications that occur after maxillary orthognathic surgery. Since cases of decreased reflex tearing after maxillary orthognathic surgery are extremely rare, we describe 2 cases of loss of reflex tearing after maxillary orthognathic surgery.
CASE PRESENTATION: Two Asian women, an 18-year-old and a 32-year-old, suffered from unilateral dryness and irritation caused by maxillary orthognathic surgery. In both patients, Schirmer test (II) showed reduced reflex tearing in 1 eye. Computed tomography showed that the pterygoid plate had been fra

The aim of this study was to improve the efficiency of surgical treatment of patients with fractures involving zygomatico-orbital complex and maxillary sinus through the use of Foley catheter. 352 patients with fractures of the middle third of the facial skeleton were treated at the Departments of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery in Novokuznetsk Institute and I.M. Sechenov First MSMU. All patients underwent open reduction and osteosynthesis using extramedullary titanium mini-plates and NiTi mini-clamps. In the cases with large bone defects additional reconstructive techniques were used such as rep

PURPOSE: The purpose of this paper was to describe a case of unviable alveolar repositioning of an intruded tooth into the nasal cavity and to bring the subject of intrusive tooth injury among patients with dentoalveolar fractures to the attention of trauma surgeons.
PATIENT: A 26-year-old male was involved in a car accident and crashed his mouth against the dashboard due to sudden deceleration. Intraoral examination revealed an anterior maxillary dentoalveolar fracture and absence of the central maxillary incisors, right lateral maxillary incisor, and left maxillary canine. Computed tomograp

The treatment of zygomatic fractures varies among surgeons, and the cosmetic and functional results are frequently less than optimal. A treatment guideline based on a simple classification of zygomatic fractures is presented. The emphasis is placed on the indications for closed and open reduction, consistent methods of three-dimensional alignment and fixation, and the management of concomitant infraorbital rim and orbital floor fractures. Postoperative results with regard to infraorbital nerve and maxillary sinus dysfunction, malar asymmetry, and orbital complications in the treatment of 1,025

Children with intellectual and physical disabilities including autism are susceptible to dental trauma as a sequela from falls due to poor muscular coordination. In addition, their altered muscle tonus often results in an open bite with labial flaring of the maxillary incisors and lip incompetence, predisposing these teeth to fractures. This case report describes an alternative approach of restoring a fractured maxillary permanent central incisor with a composite strip crown during surgical repositioning of the periodontium on an autistic patient. The prognosis of the incisor is guarded due to

The objective of this study was to assess the effect of different designs and depths of cusp reduction on fracture resistance of maxillary permanent premolars restored with CAD/CAM composite restorations. A total of 42 sound maxillary premolars were used. Standardized MOD cavities were prepared in all specimens. Teeth were randomly divided according to form of cusp reduction into three main groups (n = 14); G1:MOD cavities restored with inlays with no cusp reduction, G2:MOD cavities restored with overlays with buccal and palatal anatomical cusps reduction, G3; MOD cavities restored with overla

UNLABELLED: Pathological changes of the sinuses and the nasal bones are rarely examined sonographically. However, both acute and chronic sinusitis in maxillary and frontal sinuses and fractures of the nose could all be diagnosed correctly by diagnostic A-mode ultrasound, which is of clinical importance if children or pregnant patients are examined. The aim of the study was to analyse the reliability of A-mode ultrasonography in diagnosing sinusitis and nasal bone fractures, compared to results of CT, X-ray and clinical symptoms.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: 86 patients were included in the study: 20

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Maxillomandibular fixation (MMF) is essential for many surgeries on the bony middle and lower face. MMF techniques have multiplied in recent years, each with unique benefits and drawbacks. This review catalogs MMF trends and evidence for and against the most prevalent MMF methods.
RECENT FINDINGS: Traditional Erich arch bars remain the most robust technique in establishing MMF, particularly for comminuted/complicated fractures. Drawbacks are increased operative time required, wire stick injuries, poor oral hygiene, and gingival trauma. Screw-based techniques save considerab

Fixation is critical in zygomaticomaxillary complex (ZMC) fractures to avoid malunion; however, controversy exists as to how much hardware is required to achieve adequate stability. Current fixation regimens may not represent the minimum stabilization needed for uneventful healing. Craniomaxillofacial (CMF) computational models have shown limited load transmission through the infraorbital rim (IOR), and a previous experimental study of ZMC fractures has suggested that IOR plating does not alter CMF bone strain patterns. This study aimed to measure the impact of stabilization on fracture site d

PURPOSE: Reduction of the bilateral zygomaticomaxillary complex (ZMC) fracture with individualized templates based on computer- aided surgical simulation system. To evaluate the practicality and accuracy of this approach in the treatment of bilateral ZMC fracture.
METHODS: Sixteen patients with bilateral ZMC fractures were collected to create a study model. The authors reconstruct the ZMC on one side via the three-dimensional (3D) model, and then mirrored to the opposite side. Multiple individualized templates were made based on the 3D model, and used as intraoperative guidance to reduce frac

INTRODUCTION: The susceptibility of endodontically treated teeth (ETT) to fracture is mainly associated with the loss of tooth structure. This study evaluated the effect of the access cavity design and taper preparation of root canals on ETT fracture resistance of maxillary molars.
METHODS: For tapering assessment, 30 sound distobuccal roots of maxillary molars were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 groups (n = 10): a .04 taper, a .06 taper, or a .08 taper. Endodontic canal preparations were performed using the Twisted Files rotary system (Kerr Co, Glendora, CA). In addition, 48 intact maxillary fi
