Nitric oxide alleviates cadmium- but not arsenic-induced damages in rice roots.

Nitric oxide (NO) has signalling roles in plant stress responses. Cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) soil pollutants alter plant development, mainly the root-system, by increasing NO-content, triggering reactive oxygen species (ROS), and forming peroxynitrite by NO-reaction with the superoxide anion. Interactions of NO with ROS and peroxynitrite seem important for plant tolerance to heavy metal(oid)s, but the mechanisms underlying this process remain unclear. Our goal was to investigate NO-involvement in rice (Oryza sativa L.) root-system after exposure to Cd or As, to highlight possible difference

Prepubertal exposure to low doses of sodium arsenite impairs spermatogenesis and epididymal histophysiology in rats.

For the first time, juvenile toxicity of inorganic arsenic (As) was investigated in male rats, focusing on reproductive effects. As is a metalloid naturally occurring in the environment, being the inorganic forms the most toxics. Contaminated drinking water and agricultural products are the main prospectors of intoxication for general population. In the present study, Wistar male rats (21 days old) were distributed into three groups (n = 10/group): control (received vehicle-filtered drinking water), As1 (received AsNaO2 at 0.01 mg L-1 ) and As2 (received AsNaO2 at 10 mg L-1 ). The animals were

Role of miR-31 and SATB2 in arsenic-induced malignant BEAS-2B cell transformation.

Arsenic is a naturally occurring and highly potent metalloid known to elicit serious public health concerns. Today, approximately 200 million people around the globe are exposed to arsenic-contaminated drinking water at levels greater than the World Health Organization's recommended limit of 10 parts per billion. As a class I human carcinogen, arsenic exposure is known to elicit various cancers, including lung, skin, liver, and kidney. Current evidence suggests that arsenic is capable of inducing both genotoxic and cytotoxic injury, as well as activating epigenetic pathways to induce carcinoge

Silica glass modified with flavonoid derivatives for preconcentration of some toxic metal ions in water samples and their determination with ICP-MS.

Quercetin (3,3',4',5,7-pentahydroxyflavone) chemically bonded through pyran rearrangement on modified controlled pore silica glass (QCPSG) with a capacity 0.213 mmol/g was used for solid phase extraction of some toxic metal and metalloid ions. The newly designed QCPSG quantitatively sorbs As(V), Cd(II), Hg(II), and Pb(II) at the pH range 7.5-8.5 after 10 min of stirring. HCl (1 mol L(-1)) instantaneously elutes all the metal ions. The sorption capacity of the ion collector is 0.42, 0.46, 0.53, and 0.49 mmol g(-1) for As(V), Cd(II), Hg(II), and Pb(II), respectively, whereas the preconcentration

Effects of soluble cadmium salts versus CdSe quantum dots on the growth of planktonic Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

With their increased use, engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) will enterthe environment where they may be altered by bacteria and affect bacterial processes. Metallic ENMs, such as CdSe quantum dots (QDs), are toxic due to the release of dissolved heavy metals, but the effects of cadmium ions versus intact QDs are mostly unknown. Here, planktonic Pseudomonas aeruginosa PG201 bacteria were cultured with similar total cadmium concentrations as either fully dissolved cadmium acetate (Cd(CH3COO)2) or ligand capped CdSe QDs, and cellular morphology, growth parameters, intracellular reactive oxygen spec

New molecular arrays based on a tin(IV) porphyrin scaffold.

Two new porphyrin arrays-a hexamer and a nonamer-have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis as well as mass, (1)H NMR, and UV-vis spectroscopic methods. The scheme of construction of these arrays employs a synthetic protocol involving sequential "organic" and "inorganic" reactions conducted, respectively, at the peripheral meso-phenyl ring and the central tin(IV) ion of the porphyrin scaffold. The architecture of the hexamer is such that it is based on a covalently linked tin(IV) porphyrin dimer, with each of the two tin(IV) centers trans-axially ligated to two free-base por

Elevated CO2 synergizes with nanoplastics to intensify arsenic mobilization, biotransformation, and plant uptake in soil-spinach systems.

The co-occurrence of elevated atmospheric CO2 and micro-nano plastics (MNPs) in agroecosystems presents a compounding threat to food safety, particularly regarding the fate of toxic metalloids like arsenic (As). This study provides the first integrated assessment of how elevated CO2 (e[CO2]) interacts with polyethylene microplastics (mPE) or nanoplastics (nPE) to influence As transformation and bioavailability in a soil-spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) system. Our results demonstrated that e[CO2] not only promoted spinach biomass but also significantly increased total As accumulation in plant ti

An integrated workflow for combined organic and inorganic chemical exposome analysis.

Humans are exposed to a multitude of non-genetic factors throughout their lives, all of which are encompassed in the concept of the exposome. To assess its chemical component, combinations of complementary analytical techniques are needed for broad chemical space coverage. However, approaches for combined organic and inorganic analysis remain scarce and are further constrained by limited sample availability (e.g., in historical biobanks or preterm infants), as individual techniques require different sample preparation workflows. Therefore, we developed and evaluated an approach to combine samp

The Modern Environment and Childhood Asthma: The Role of Air Pollution and Heavy Metal Exposure.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Childhood asthma is the most common chronic non-communicable disease in children and a major global public health challenge. Although genetic predisposition contributes to asthma susceptibility, the high burden of disease-particularly in high-sociodemographic-index regions-points to a central role of environmental exposures characteristic of the modern environment. This review synthesizes current evidence linking ambient air pollution and heavy metal exposure to childhood asthma, with a focus on early-life vulnerability, underlying biological mechanisms, and implications for

Biochar-derived dissolved organic matter induced changes in the bacterial communities structure and metabolic functions in As and Cd contaminated soil.

This study investigates the effects of pyrolysis temperature and feedstock type for biochar production on the release of biochar-derived dissolved organic matter (BDOM) and its impact on the soil bacterial community and the composition of soil dissolved organic matter (SDOM). The BDOM was extracted from biochars produced from sheep bones, rice husk, and rabbit manure, prepared at low (400 °C, LPT) or high (700 °C, HPT) pyrolysis temperatures. The BDOM was then applied at a concentration of 2.5 % (w/w). LPT-BDOM produced higher contents of BDOM (up to 1440 ± 43 mg kg-1), resulting in higher SDO

Toxic elements and fatty acid composition in the freshwater fish family Cyprinidae (Rafinesque 1815): balancing nutritional benefits and health risks.

The aim of this study was to assess the toxicity of heavy metals/metalloids, including arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury accumulated in the muscle of commonly consumed fish from the Cyprinidae. We discussed the importance of fatty acids in the human diet and investigated their profile in the muscle of different fish species. Additionally, our goal was to evaluate the benefits of fish consumption in relation to its risks, not only by considering the advantages of fatty acids and the drawbacks of heavy metal toxicity but also by examining how these pollutants may alter the fatty acid profile i

Phytohormones: Heart of plants' signaling network under biotic, abiotic, and climate change stresses.

Industrialization has made the world increasingly unstable, subjecting plants to various constraints. As a consequence, plants are constantly experiencing biological, environmental, and climatic constraints, necessitating defense mechanisms to ensure their survival. Plants are vulnerable to various biotic factors, including insects, pathogens (bacterial, fungal, viral, and nematodes), weeds, and herbivores. They also face different abiotic and climate change challenges such as drought (regulated by genes like GH3, DREB, ZIFL1;3, etc), salinity, heavy metals, metalloids, ultraviolet radiations

Prenatal exposure to metal mixtures and lung function in children from the New Hampshire birth cohort study.

Prenatal exposure to metals/metalloids, even at common US population levels, may pose risks to fetal health, and affect children's lung function. Yet, the combined effects of simultaneous prenatal exposures on children's lung function remain largely unexplored. This study analyzed 11 metals (As speciation, Cd, Co, Cu, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, Sn, Zn) in maternal urine during weeks 24-28 of gestation and evaluated lung function, including forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in the first second of expiration (FEV1), in 316 US mother-child pairs at around age 7. We used Bayesian K

Combining metal and stable isotope analyses to disentangle contaminant transfer in a freshwater community dominated by alien species.

Freshwater ecosystems are negatively impacted by various pollutants, from agricultural, urban and industrial wastewater, with metals being one of the largest concerns. Moreover, freshwater ecosystems are often affected by alien species introductions that can modify habitats and trophic relationships. Accordingly, the threat posed by metals interacts with those by alien species, since the latter can accumulate and transfer these substances across the food web to higher trophic levels. How metals transfer within such communities is little studied. We analysed the concentration of 14 metals/metal

Associations between environmental pollutants and larval amphibians in wetlands contaminated by energy-related brines are potentially mediated by feeding traits.

Energy production in the Williston Basin, located in the Prairie Pothole Region of central North America, has increased rapidly over the last several decades. Advances in recycling and disposal practices of saline wastewaters (brines) co-produced during energy production have reduced ecological risks, but spills still occur often and legacy practices of releasing brines into the environment caused persistent salinization in many areas. Aside from sodium and chloride, these brines contain elevated concentrations of metals and metalloids (lead, selenium, strontium, antimony and vanadium), ammoni

Performance comparison of hematite (α-Fe2O3)-polymer composite and core-shell nanofibers as point-of-use filtration platforms for metal sequestration.

Point-of-use water treatment technologies can help mitigate risks from drinking water contamination, particularly for metals (and metalloids) that originate in distribution systems (e.g., chromium, lead, copper) or are naturally occurring in private groundwater wells (e.g., arsenic). Here, composite nanofibers of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) with embedded hematite (α-Fe2O3) nanoparticles were synthesized via a single-pot electrospinning synthesis. A core-shell nanofiber composite was also prepared through the subsequent hydrothermal growth of α-Fe2O3 nanostructures on embedded hematite composites.

Assessment of environmentally contaminated sediment using a contact assay with early life stage zebrafish (Danio rerio).

Lake Saint-Louis, a shallow fluvial lake near the western tip of the island of Montreal, QC, Canada is an important spawning ground for many species of fish. Sediments in certain areas of the lake are known to be contaminated with high levels of metals and legacy organic chemicals. To improve our understanding of risk to native fish populations, we conducted a study evaluating levels of sediment contamination and potential effects on early life stage fish. Concentrations of PAHs, PCBs, PCDDs and PCDFs were several orders of magnitude higher at two industrial sites (B1 and B2) than at a nearby

Seasonal changes in antioxidative/oxidative profile of mining and non-mining populations of Syrian beancaper as determined by soil conditions.

Soil pollution by heavy metals/metalloids (HMMs) is a problem worldwide. To prevent dispersion of contaminated particles by erosion, the maintenance of a vegetative cover is needed. Successful plant establishment in multi-polluted soils can be hampered not only by HMM toxicities, but also by soil nutrient deficiencies and the co-occurrence of abiotic stresses. Some plant species are able to thrive under these multi-stress scenarios often linked to marked fluctuations in environmental factors. This study aimed to investigate the metabolic adjustments involved in Zygophyllum fabago acclimative r
