Pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and its complications: effects of antihypertensive drugs.

Since hypertension is an important risk factor for atherosclerosis, it is logical to assume that treatment to lower blood pressure will prevent atherosclerosis. However, the relationship between hypertension and atherosclerosis is indirect and complex. Drugs that lower pressure will prevent heart failure and arteriolar complications such as renal failure or strokes caused by lacunar infarction or brain haemorrhage due to rupture of microaneurysms. However, there is little evidence that atherosclerotic complications can be reduced by lowering pressure. It is important to understand the pathogen

The effect of pregnancy on the natural course of diabetic retinopathy.

To determine the influence of pregnancy on the retinas of insulin-dependent diabetics, we assessed 53 diabetic women by retinal photography every six weeks throughout pregnancy and for six months post partum. Thirty-nine nonpregnant insulin-dependent diabetics of childbearing age served as controls. Of the 39 controls, 18 (46.2%) had retinopathy. Of the 53 pregnant women, 33 (62%) had retinopathy at the first examination and eight others (15%) developed it as pregnancy advanced, significantly increasing the prevalence of retinopathy during pregnancy to 77.4%. Progressive changes occurred as pr

Non-invasive bioelectrical therapy suppresses retinal neovascularization by modulating cellular metabolism and inflammation.

BACKGROUND: Pathological retinal neovascularization, a major cause of blindness, occurs in conditions such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy (DR). Microglial activation and chronic neuroinflammation play critical roles in disease progression by promoting vascular permeability and angiogenesis. While anti-VEGF therapies are the current standard of care, their efficacy is limited, requiring frequent intraocular injections and raising concerns about long-term retinal health. Noninvasive transpalpebral electrical stimulation (TpES) has emerged as a potential altern

Reduction of liver ischemia reperfusion injury by silencing of TNF-α gene with shRNA.

BACKGROUND: Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) is a central mediator in the hepatic response to ischemia/reperfusion. Short hairpin RNA (shRNA) has been proven to be an effective means of harnessing the RNA interference pathway in mammalian cells. In the current study, we investigated whether silencing TNF-α gene with shRNA can prevent liver ischemic reperfusion injury (IRI). METHODS: Male BalB/c mice were randomized to TNF-α shRNA, scramble shRNA, or sham operation groups. TNF-α shRNA and scramble shRNA groups were injected 48 h before inducing IRI. IRI was induced via microaneurysm clamps

SARS-CoV-2 infects cells lining the blood-retinal barrier and induces a hyperinflammatory immune response in the retina via systemic exposure.

SARS-CoV-2 has been shown to cause wide-ranging ocular abnormalities and vision impairment in COVID-19 patients. However, there is limited understanding of SARS-CoV-2 in ocular transmission, tropism, and associated pathologies. The presence of viral RNA in corneal/conjunctival tissue and tears, along with the evidence of viral entry receptors on the ocular surface, has led to speculation that the eye may serve as a potential route of SARS-CoV-2 transmission. Here, we investigated the interaction of SARS-CoV-2 with cells lining the blood-retinal barrier (BRB) and the role of the eye in its tran

A six year follow up study of the subclinical effects of carbon disulphide exposure on the cardiovascular system.

AIMS: A six year prospective cohort study was conducted to clarify whether the current carbon disulphide (CS2) exposure level is low enough to prevent subclinical health impairment and/or to ameliorate health effects due to previous high exposure. This paper describes the effects on the cardiovascular systems. METHODS: The study subjects were 432 male workers exposed to CS2 and 402 non-exposed workers in Japan, all of whom were examined in 1992-93. A total of 251 CS2 exposed, 140 formerly exposed, and 359 non-exposed workers participated in the follow up survey (follow up rate 89.9%) in 1998-

Necrotizing arterial lesions in mice-bearing tumors induced by polyoma virus.

In the course of determining tumor profiles for wild-type and recombinant mouse polyoma viruses (MPyV's), we fortuitously discovered two types of necrotizing arterial disease in polyoma tumor-bearing C3H/BiDa mice. One type, designated BLAND, consisted of foci of necrosis unaccompanied by inflammatory reaction, in the muscular coat of aorta, pulmonary arterial trunk, and primary or occasionally secondary branches of these vessels. BLAND lesions contained MPyV capsid antigen VP1 as shown by immunocytochemistry, and appeared to be the result of viral cytolytic infection within artery walls. Lesi

Ischemic Type of Central Vein Occlusion in a Patient With Bietti Crystalline Dystrophy: A Longitudinal Follow-Up of 12 Years.

Bietti crystalline dystrophy (BCD) is a rare chorioretinal dystrophy associated with mutations in the CYP4V2 gene, characterized by intraretinal crystalline deposits and progressive chorioretinal degeneration. Retinal vein occlusion (RVO) is exceedingly rare in BCD, with only one previously reported case of tributary RVO without a detailed clinical description. We hereby describe a 44-year-old man with genetically proven stage 2 BCD who developed right central RVO (CRVO) eight years following the initial diagnosis in 2013. Though he did not notice any new visual disturbance in the right eye, r

A Lesion-Aware Detection Framework for Red Lesions in Retinal Fundus Images.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a serious eye condition caused by damage to the retina due to prolonged diabetes. Among the first signs of DR are microaneurysms and hemorrhages, collectively called red lesions. Detecting these lesions is crucial in preventing vision loss. This paper presents a refined feature attention (RFA) module that refines features from the feature pyramid network (FPN) layers before they are passed to the detection head. Dataset-specific adaptive anchor ratios are derived using a quantile-based multi-stage clustering strategy to better align the anchors with lesion geometry

Ocular Involvement in Systemic Sclerosis: Updated Review and New Insights on Microvascular Impairment.

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a chronic multisystemic disease characterized by immunological activation, diffuse vasculopathy, and generalized fibrosis exhibiting a variety of symptoms. A recognized precursor of SSc is Raynaud's phenomenon, which is part of the very early disease of systemic sclerosis (VEDOSS) in combination with nailfold videocapillaroscopy (NVC) impairment. The pathophysiology of ocular involvement, alterations in internal organs, and body integumentary system involvement in SSc patients are complicated and poorly understood, with multiple mechanisms presumptively working toge

Case Report: Transient Myopic Shift and Other Sequelae in Response to Adverse Reaction to Sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim.

SIGNIFICANCE: There are several isolated reports of systemic medications or medical conditions that can cause acute transient myopic shifts along with other ocular sequelae, but rarely has this been reported for the combination antibiotic sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim. PURPOSE: This case illustrates a rarely seen condition that may result from treatment with sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim and result in serious, vision-threatening conditions. These can be treated by immediate discontinuation of the drug, steroids, ocular hypertensive medication, and cycloplegia, depending on the circumstances.
