This study investigates the effect of Fenton reagent on the structure and function of a microbial consortium during the anaerobic degradation of hexachloroethane (HCA) and tetrachloroethene (PCE). Anaerobic biodegradation tests of HCA and PCE were performed in batch reactors using an anaerobic microbial consortium that had been exposed to Fenton reagent for durations of 0, 0.04, and 2 days and then allowed to recover for periods of 0, 3, and 7 days. The bacterial community structure was determined using culture-independent methods of 16S rRNA gene sequencing and automated ribosomal intergenic

AIMS: To determine the kinetics of substrate fluxes in a microbial community in order to elucidate the roles of the community members.
METHODS AND RESULTS: The kinetics of substrate sharing in a bacterial consortium were measured by a new analytical approach combining immunostaining, stable isotope probing and fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS). The bacterial consortium, consisting of four strains and growing on 4-chlorosalicylate (4-CS), was pulse-dosed with the degradation intermediate [U-(13) C]-4-chlorocatechol (4-CC). Cells were stained with strain-specific antibodies sorted by F

Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE) is a leading cause of multidrug-resistant infections in hospitalized patients, yet no reproducible microbiota therapies exist to selectively displace it. Here we harness intra-species competition within Enterococcus to suppress VRE colonization. Through in vitro screening and mouse colonization models, we identified a single antibiotic-susceptible strain, E. faecalis X98, that significantly reduced VRE burden both in vitro and in mouse experiments, whereas multi-strain consortia failed due to competitive interference among consortium members. In parallel

Accurate tracking of bacterial strains that stably engraft in faecal microbiota transplant (FMT) recipients is critical for understanding the determinants of strain engraftment, evaluating correlations with clinical outcomes and guiding the development of therapeutic consortia. While short-read sequencing has advanced FMT research, it faces challenges in strain-level de novo metagenomic assembly. Here we describe LongTrack, a method that uses long-read metagenomic assemblies for FMT strain tracking. LongTrack shows higher precision and specificity than short-read approaches, especially when mu

Quorum sensing (QS) is a molecular signaling modality that mediates molecular-based cell-cell communication. Prevalent in nature, QS networks provide bacteria with a method to gather information from the environment and make decisions based on the intel. With its ability to autonomously facilitate both inter- and intraspecies gene regulation, this process can be rewired to enable autonomously actuated, but molecularly programmed, genetic control. On the one hand, novel QS-based genetic circuits endow cells with smart functions that can be used in many fields of engineering, and on the other, r

Microbial pollutant removal capabilities can be determined and exploited to accomplish bioremediation of hydrocarbon-polluted environments. Thus, increasing knowledge on environmental behavior of different petroleum products can lead to better bioremediation strategies. Biodegradation can be enhanced by adding biosurfactants to hydrocarbon-degrading microorganism consortia. This work aimed to improve petroleum products biodegradation by using a biosurfactant produced by Bacillus subtilis. The produced biosurfactant was added to biodegradation assays containing crude oil, diesel, and kerosene.

Engineered living materials (ELMs) at the multicelluar level represent an innovation that promises programmable properties for various applications. However, the rational tuning of the mechanical properties of such ELMs from first principles remains a challenge. Here we use synthetic cell-cell adhesins to systematically characterize how rheological and viscoelastic properties of multicellular materials made from living bacteria can be tuned through adhesion strength, cell size, cell shape, and adhesion logic. We find that many of the previous results obtained for non-living materials also appl

Conidial dormancy is a critical survival strategy for fungi under stress, yet the mechanisms governing the switch between dormancy and germination remain unclear. Here we identify the G-protein-coupled receptor, Rsd1, as a farnesol-responsive sensor controlling this dormancy switch in the plant pathogen Fusarium pseudograminearum, which causes Fusarium crown rot. Under high population density and nutrient limitation, endogenous farnesol activates Rsd1 and downstream signalling pathways to suppress conidial germination. Rsd1 also responds to extracellular farnesol, linking environmental signals

While Desulfovibrio vulgaris UR1 demonstrates efficient U(VI) reduction under anaerobic conditions, its application has remained largely confined to laboratory-scale investigations. To address this limitation, this study integrates laboratory mechanistic analysis with field-scale bioaugmentation, bridging microscopic insights with macroscopic validation for the remediation of U(VI)-contaminated aquifers. Batch and simulated groundwater experiments demonstrated that quartz sand served as a matrix to promote biofilm growth and EPS secretion, which enhanced U(VI) reduction efficiency by ∼40 % and

Microbial dysbiosis and disrupted mucosal immune homeostasis are integrally involved in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs). Live biotherapeutic products (LBPs) offer a potential therapeutic strategy to restore beneficial microbes and mitigate disease. We investigated the therapeutic efficacy of 2 LBPs, human Clostridia consortia 17-mix and 11-mix, by treating established colitis in murine models. Both LBPs exhibited therapeutic effects in T cell-mediated chronic colitis models induced by human microbiota and in pathobiont-driven gnotobiotic colitis models established with c

The cyanidation process has been, and still remains, a profitable and highly efficient process for the recovery of precious metals from ores. However, this process has contributed to environmental deterioration and potable water reserve contamination due to the discharge of poorly treated, or untreated, cyanide containing wastewater. The process produces numerous cyanide complexes in addition to the gold cyanocomplex. Additionally, the discharge constituents also include hydrogen cyanide (HCN) - metallic complexes with iron, nickel, copper, zinc, cobalt and other metals; thiocyanate (SCN); and

The rhizosphere is a living physical space that is constantly evolving and is characterized by a complex interplay between beneficial microbes, pathogens, and plants, mediated by molecular and ecological interactions. These three-way relationships constitute a rhizosphere "triangular warfare system," which controls plant health, nutrient uptake, disease resistance, and plant resilience. This review provides a mechanistic overview of the molecular, metabolic and ecological processes underlying these tripartite interactions. We discuss how plants integrate pattern-triggered immunity (PTI), effec

BACKGROUND: The gayal (Bos frontalis), a semi-domesticated bovine species, demonstrates exceptional adaptability to lignocellulose-rich diets dominated by bamboo, suggesting the presence of a specialized gastrointestinal microbiome. However, the functional mechanisms underlying this host-microbiome interaction remain poorly understood. Here, we conducted integrated metagenomic and metatranscriptomic analyses of rumen, cecum, and colon digesta from yellow cattle and gayal raised on the same bamboo-based high-fiber diet.
RESULTS: The results showed that gayal exhibited superior fiber-degrading

Drought-mediated declines in grain nutritional quality and cereal yield put global food security at risk, yet the rhizosphere microbiome provides an alternative solution for improving crop tolerance. Our review synthesised existing knowledge on how soil microbiomes, particularly arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), simultaneously regulate three interlinked pillars of crop performance (stress tolerance, grain nutrient uptake, and yield) under drought. Our in-depth analysis showed that such relationships were governed by synergies (improved root arc

Abiotic stresses such as drought and salinity represent major constraints to global crop productivity, necessitating innovative strategies for enhancing plant resilience. As a critical regulator of root system architecture, auxin (specifically indole-3-acetic acid (IAA)) functions as a vital cross-kingdom signaling molecule that mediates dynamic interactions between plants and auxin-synthesizing rhizosphere microorganisms. This review explores the role of auxin as a cross-kingdom signaling molecule mediating interactions between plants and the rhizosphere microbiome. Auxin-producing plant grow

Bacteria survive in nature by forming biofilms on surfaces and probably most, if not all, bacteria (and fungi) are capable of forming biofilms. A biofilm is a structured consortium of bacteria embedded in a self-produced polymer matrix consisting of polysaccharide, protein and extracellular DNA. Bacterial biofilms are resistant to antibiotics, disinfectant chemicals and to phagocytosis and other components of the innate and adaptive inflammatory defense system of the body. It is known, for example, that persistence of staphylococcal infections related to foreign bodies is due to biofilm format

Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) has evolved from an empirical remedy for recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection (rCDI) into a foundational platform for precision microbiome-based therapeutics. This comprehensive review details FMT's journey, analyzing its multifaceted mechanisms of action-including restoration of colonization resistance, metabolic reprogramming via short-chain fatty acids and bile acids, and profound immunomodulation-which extend far beyond simple microbial replacement. We critically evaluate its established, high efficacy in rCDI and its expanding, albeit more va

Anthropogenic activities, primarily fossil fuel combustion, have increased atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) levels and climate change effects. Carbon dioxide removal (CDR) is now widely accepted as essential in all pathways to limit global warming in line with the Paris Agreement. Biomineralisation offers compelling and promising natural pathways for durable carbon sequestration by converting CO₂ into stable carbonate minerals, a process driven by a suite of biomolecules within bio-calcifying organisms. These processes are orchestrated by biomolecules such as proteins (e.g., carbonic anhydrase
