IMPORTANCE: Kawasaki disease is a leading cause of acquired heart disease among children in high-income countries, but potential associations between fertility treatments and Kawasaki disease remain unknown, despite both becoming increasingly prevalent worldwide.
OBJECTIVE: To examine whether fertility treatments are associated with the risk of Kawasaki disease among offspring before 5 years of age in the general population.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study used data from the Japan Environmental and Children's Study, an ongoing nationwide multicenter prospective birth coh

This study aims to assess the impact of non-fluorinated glucocorticoid use and varying doses on the long-term physical, neurological, and social-emotional development outcomes of offspring born to patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The goal is to provide guidance on the appropriate dosage of glucocorticoids during pregnancy in SLE patients. We conducted a follow-up study on the offspring of SLE patients who had pregnancies and were admitted to our obstetrics department between January 1, 2016, and September 30, 2021. Patients who received immunosuppressants and dexamethasone wer

Nephron number in humans varies up to 13-fold, likely reflecting the impact of multiple factors on kidney development, including inherited body size and ethnicity, as well as maternal health and nutrition, fetal exposure to gestational diabetes or preeclampsia and other environmental factors, which may potentially be modifiable. Such conditions predispose to low or high offspring birth weight, growth restriction or preterm birth, which have all been associated with increased risks of higher blood pressures and/or kidney dysfunction in later life. Low birth weight, preterm birth, and intrauteri

The objective was to evaluate the effect of the resistance of ewes to gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) on the parasitologic and productive performance of their lambs during preweaning and postweaning periods. Offspring from 44 Pelibuey ewes classified as resistant or susceptible to GIN were evaluated. During the preweaning period, birth weight (BW), live weight (LW) at 35 and 70 days of age, and live weight changes (LWC) were determined in 73 lambs. During the postweaning period, 20 lambs to susceptible or resistant ewes were evaluated. The lambs were challenged under natural GIN infections an

The bacterium Rickettsia rickettsii is the etiological agent of Brazilian spotted fever (BSF), and its most important vector to humans in Brazil is the tick Amblyomma sculptum. Capybaras are the main hosts of A. sculptum in many BSF-endemic areas and are considered valuable sentinels for BSF surveillance. This study aimed to assess the persistence of anti-R. rickettsii antibodies for long periods in capybaras and their passive transfer to offspring. For this purpose, three adult capybaras previously exposed to multiple infections with R. rickettsii were followed up until 3.1 years after their

The incidence of multiple births is rising in many countries including the U.K., mainly as a result of treatment for infertility. Parents of twins, triplets or more require specific information, advice and support at all stages of parenting from diagnosis of a multiple pregnancy onwards. Specialist midwives have an important role to play in this, as do voluntary organisations such as the Multiple Births Foundation. The first part of this two-part article provides an update of some current thinking on multiple births, including twin-twin transfusion syndrome. Part two will provide information a

General anesthetic exposure during pregnancy has neurotoxic effects on the developing brain, causing long-term cognitive dysfunction in the offspring. Sevoflurane exposure during mid-gestation results in premature differentiation of neural stem cells (NSCs), being the crucial factor affecting normal hippocampal functions and contributing to neurocognitive impairment. However, the related molecular mechanism remains unclear. For in vivo assays, pregnant rats were exposed to 3% sevoflurane once on gestational day 14 (G14) or 3 times on G13, 14, and 15 (2 h per day). For in vitro assays, primary

Adverse early life experiences are well-established risk factors for neurological disorders later in life. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the impact of adverse experiences on neurophysiological systems throughout life remain incompletely understood. Previous studies suggest that social attachment to parents in early development are indispensable for infants to grow into healthy adults. In situations where multiple offspring are born in a single birth in common marmosets, human hand-rearing is employed to ensure the survival of the offspring in captivity. However, hand-reared marm

Choline is a vital nutrient needed during early development for both humans and rodents. Severe dietary choline deficiency during pregnancy leads to birth defects, while more limited deficiency during mid- to late pregnancy causes deficits in hippocampal plasticity in adult rodent offspring that are accompanied by cognitive deficits only when task demands are high. Because prenatal choline supplementation confers neuroprotection of the adult hippocampus against a variety of neural insults and aids memory, we hypothesized that prenatal choline deficiency may enhance vulnerability to neural inju

UNLABELLED: Phenylketonuria (PKU) is the autosomal recessive deficiency of phenylalanine hydroxylase resulting in the accumulation of phenylalanine (Phe) in blood and in the brain. Phe restriction in a patient's diet is determined depending on the amount of Phe intake which allows for stable blood Phe levels within the therapeutic range of 120-360µmol/L. In clinical practice the empirical determination of Phe tolerance relies on frequent assessment of blood Phe concentrations in relation to Phe intake from food records. Untreated maternal PKU may lead to maternal PKU syndrome in offspring. The

BACKGROUND: Neural tube defects (NTDs) are one of the most common congenital anomalies. NTDs are caused by multiple factors that develop in the intrauterine stage and represent a critical birth defect morbidity and mortality. NTDs may depend on a risk factor modifiable by parents; hence, paternal health is important for transgenerational health, as it contributes half of the genetic material for the development of a new individual.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to describe demographic, biochemical parameters, and seminal characteristics of parents of offspring with NTDs.

New bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a neonatal disease that is theorized to begin in utero and manifests as reduced alveolarization due to inflammation of the lung. Risk factors for new BPD in human infants include intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), premature birth (PTB) and formula feeding. Using a mouse model, our group recently reported that a paternal history of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) exposure increased his offspring's risk of IUGR, PTB, and new BPD. Additionally, formula supplementation of these neonates worsened the severity of pulmonary disease. In a separat

This study aimed to assess the association between maternal-isolated oligohydramnios (IO) and offspring long-term neurological complications. A population-based retrospective cohort study was conducted, including all births at a single tertiary medical center in Israel between the years 1991 and 2014. Multiple pregnancies and potential pregnancy complications associated with oligohydramnios were excluded. The computerized obstetrical database was linked with the computerized dataset of all pediatric hospitalizations of the same medical center. Evaluation of cumulative neurological-associated h

BACKGROUND: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is the most common cause of female infertility and is associated with higher levels of circulating androgens. Exposure to higher levels of androgens in utero may be a risk factor for obesity among children of women with PCOS.
METHODS: We examined whether maternal PCOS was associated with differences in offspring growth and obesity in the Upstate KIDS study, a prospective cohort study of infants born in New York State (excluding New York City) oversampled for fertility treatments and multiple births. OBJECTIVE: Excessive response to unexpected or "deviant" stimuli during infancy and early childhood represents an early risk marker for anxiety disorders. However, research has yet to delineate the specific brain regions underlying the neonatal response to deviant stimuli near birth and the relation to risk for anxiety disorders. The authors used task-based functional MRI (fMRI) to delineate the neonatal response to deviant stimuli and its relationship to maternal trait anxiety.
METHODS: The authors used fMRI to measure brain activity evoked by deviant auditory stimuli in 45 sleeping neonates
