Ingrown Toenails During Chemotherapy and Stem Cell Transplantation in Children With Hematologic Malignancies and Solid Tumors.

BACKGROUND: At our institution, we noted that children with hematologic malignancies and solid tumors often suffered from ingrown toenails (IGTNs) during hospitalization for chemotherapy and stem cell transplantation. However, only few reports have dealt with IGTNs in the above setting. PROCEDURE: Between August 2007 and July 2017, 180 children who received treatment for hematologic malignancies and solid tumors at our institute were enrolled in this study. Twelve patients with insufficient data and 7 patients with past histories of IGTNs were excluded. A total of 161 patients were analyzed.

Phenol Dilution With Saline Solution Versus Alcohol in Partial Matricectomy for Onychocryptosis.

BACKGROUND: Onychocryptosis significantly impacts quality of life. Chemical partial matricectomy with phenol is a common surgical treatment. The use of alcohol as a solvent during this procedure has been controversial. In vitro studies suggest that physiologic saline solution (PSS) may be a more effective solvent for phenol. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the in vivo efficacy of PSS as a phenol solvent, in terms of postoperative outcomes, compared to alcohol. METHODS: A retrospective unicentric cohort study was conducted on patients who underwent partial chemical matricectomy with phenol for onychoc

Effects of a Training Course for Andalusian Podiatrists on Antibiotic Management in Ingrown Toenail Infections: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: The use of antibiotics (ABs) for the prevention and management of infections has been widespread for decades and, at this time, AB resistance is a global health crisis. The available evidence highlights the need to reduce the prophylactic and therapeutic use of ABs to avoid associated risks. METHODS: A preliminary study with a total sample of 56 Andalusian (Spain) podiatrists was surveyed. The purpose of this study was to identify whether there were changes in prescription habits from a situation before a subsequent training course on AB indications for the management of infection

Management of disorders of the forefoot and toenails associated with running.

Management of forefoot problems of runners requires that one understand the basic foot types and their relation to the problems as they occur and that one evaluate the entire lower extremity. The forefoot problems have been divided into disorders of the first metatarsophalangeal joint, lesser toes, metatarsalgia, callouses, and disorders of the toenails. Specific treatment and recommendation are made for each entity. Nonoperative treatment should be used whenever possible. Minor surgical procedures are helpful, but if the deformity is so severe that major reconstruction of the forefoot is perf

Therapeutic effects of fibrates in postprandial lipemia.

Despite the decrease in opportunistic infections associated with HIV in the highly active antiretroviral treatment (HAART) era, a significant number of patients still present with skin pathology, some of which can be attributed directly or indirectly to antiretroviral therapy. The non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors exhibit a class effect with regard to skin adverse manifestations, and the spectrum of disease can vary from a mild morbilliform rash to Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Certain protease inhibitors are associated with rash, and indinavir causes retinoid-like manifestations suc

Labeled use of efinaconazole topical solution 10% in treating onychomycosis in children and a review of the management of pediatric onychomycosis.

Onychomycosis is a difficult to treat condition whose prevalence is increasing. Until recently, there was no FDA approved antifungal agent for the treatment of onychomycosis in children. Although systemic antifungal agents are effective, their use is restricted by the potential adverse events and drug-drug interactions. There is evidence regarding the safety and efficacy of topical antifungal agents for pediatric onychomycosis. We have summarized the results of a recently published study using efinaconazole topical solution 10% to treat onychomycosis in children and discuss management of pedia

The Recurrence of Onychocryptosis when Treated with Phenolization: Does Phenol Application Time Play a Role? A Follow-Up Study on 622 Procedures.

INTRODUCTION: Chemical matricectomy using phenol (CMP) is a recognized treatment option for onychocryptosis. However, the appropriate phenol application time to achieve nail matrix destruction is still unknown. Optimal ablation leads to low recurrence rates. The aim of this research was to assess the recurrence rate of onychocryptosis in a cohort of 622 consecutive patients treated with a 4-min CMP. METHODS: We recruited all patients undergoing a 4-min CMP for onychocryptosis at the Istituto Podologico Italiano, Rome, Italy, in 2008-2017. Postoperative follow-up visits were set at 24 h, 7, 14

Modified sleeve method treatment of ingrown toenail.

BACKGROUND: Ingrown toenail is a common problem that causes inconvenience, pain, and limitation of daily function. Current conventional treatment methods are not satisfactory and have a high recurrence rate. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate a modification of an existing, although uncommonly used, method for treating ingrown toenail. METHODS: Patients with ingrown toenail were treated under local anesthesia by insertion of a flexible narrow plastic tube under the toenail along its lateral border. Tube fixation was performed with silk or nylon 2-0 sutures passed through the toenail. Granulomatous and in

Recognizing, treating, and preventing common foot problems.

The incidence, prevalence, and severity of foot conditions increase with age. Teaching patients simple preventive techniques is crucial. Recognition, treatment, and prevention of common foot complaints--i.e., toenail problems, infections, corns and calluses, injuries, flat feet, bunions, arthritis of the toes, and toe and joint deformities--are reviewed.

Exercise and the aging foot.

Overall physical fitness has become increasingly popular in the 1990s, especially in the geriatric community. More runners, bikers, swimmers, and aerobic advocates over the age of 55 are requiring medical attention for foot complaints, as the feet are a necessary tool for almost any athletic activity. This paper discusses the most common foot disorders in active geriatric patients and outlines a variety of conservative and surgical approaches to management. The goal is early return to pain-free activity.

Wedge Resection and Nail Groove Reconstruction With Hanging Thread Knot in the Treatment of Onychocryptosis.

BACKGROUND: Onychocryptosis is characterized by the nail plate penetrating the lateral nail fold, resulting in varying degrees of infection and deformity. Standardized treatment protocols for onychocryptosis, particularly in Stages IIb, III, and IV, have not been universally established, highlighting the urgent need for the development of effective interventions. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of wedge resection and nail groove reconstruction using the hanging thread knot for the treatment of onychocryptosis. METHODS: At our hospital, a total of 155 patients with onychoc

Effects of Virtual Reality Distraction on Pain, Stress, and Heart Rate During Pediatric Ingrown Toenail Surgery: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

OBJECTIVE: Immersive virtual reality (VR) shows efficacy in reducing pediatric procedural pain and stress, yet studies remain heterogeneous and conflate stress with anxiety while neglecting physiological measures such as heart rate (HR). The role of goal-directed attention remains underexplored, as no studies have controlled for VR-interactivity to isolate its contribution under clinically relevant conditions. Thus, this RCT investigates the effects of goal-directed VR vs. free-interaction VR vs. standard-of-care (SoC) distraction (controls) on self-reported pain, stress, and HR during ingrown
