Risk factors for psychosis in an ultra high-risk group: psychopathology and clinical features.

The identification of individuals at high risk of developing a psychotic disorder has long been a goal of clinicians because it is thought that early treatment of this group may prevent onset of the disorder. However, little is known of predictive factors of psychosis, even within a high-risk group. This study followed up 104 young people thought to be at 'ultra high risk' for schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders by virtue of having a family history of psychotic disorder combined with some functional decline or the presence of subthreshold or self-limiting psychotic symptoms. All subjec

Predictors of pain catastrophizing in women with rheumatoid arthritis.

Catastrophizing has been conceptualized as an appraisal, a cognitive distortion, and a coping mechanism in the psychosocial literature. Regardless of its conceptualization, catastrophizing has been associated with negative psychological and physical outcomes in numerous studies, including our intervention study with 90 women with rheumatoid arthritis. Because of catastrophizing's robust relationship with negative outcomes, predictors of catastrophizing as a pain coping behavior were investigated in this sample, using data collected from two points in time before the intervention. Using Lazarus

RN-to-MSN students' attitudes toward women experiencing homelessness: A focus group study.

When health professionals, including RNs, have negative attitudes toward women experiencing homelessness, they create barriers to services. It is incumbent on nursing faculty to develop curricula that address homelessness and associated stereotypes, as well as to prepare students to provide safe and appropriate care to the homeless population. The aim of this qualitative study was to examine the attitudes of RN-to-MSN students toward mothers living with their children in a transitional shelter. A convenience sample of 10 students enrolled in a community health nursing course at a university in

Cancer fatalism and breast cancer screening in African American women.

Despite significant advances in science, medicine, and technology African American women are more likely to die from breast cancer than Caucasian women. There is a growing body of literature that describes strategies to improve breast cancer screening among African American women. However, data suggest that African American women, compared to Caucasian women, are less likely to participate in regular breast cancer screening. The belief that a diagnosis of cancer will result in death has been identified as a potential barrier to cancer screening in African American population groups. However, r

[Catatonia: resurgence of a concept. A review of the international literature].

Catatonia was first described in 1874 by Kahlbaum as being a cyclic disease mixing motor features and mood variations. Because most cases ended in dementia, Kraepelin recognized catatonia as a form of dementia praecox and Bleuler included it within his wide group of schizophrenias. This view influenced the psychiatric practice for more than 70 years. But catatonia was recently reconsidered and this because of the definition of more precise diagnosis criteria, the discovery of a striking association with mood disorders, and the emphasis on effective therapeutics. [Perioperative myocardial infarction and cardiac complications after noncardiac surgery in patients with prior myocardial infarction. I. Clinical data and diagnosis, incidence].

UNLABELLED: Patients with a prior myocardial infarction (MI) have a high risk of perioperative reinfarction compared with the normal population (5%-8% vs. 0.1%-0.7%) [10]. According to Rao [13], a reduction of this risk is possible when patients are monitored invasively and all haemodynamic parameters are kept within the physiological range. In most institutions it is not feasible to treat patients as Rao recommended: this would overstrain both hospital structure and financial resources. We studied the incidence of perioperative MI and other cardiac events in patients with prior MI. During the

EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES ON DIABETES : SERIES I. PRODUCTION AND CONTROL OF DIABETES IN THE DOG. 5. VARIOUS FAILURES OF DIETETIC TREATMENT, AND THEIR CAUSES.

1. Practically every detail of clinical diabetes can be reproduced in partially depancreatized animals. The resemblance is made still more exact by the susceptibility of such dogs to acidosis and coma, as will be shown in later papers, and also by the similarity of the anatomic changes in the islands of Langerhans. These animals are therefore useful test objects for a therapeutic investigation. 2. These animals at first show considerable tendency to regain assimilation, comparable to that in the early stages of most human cases of diabetes; and in some instances they recover so as to be able t

[A rare and not very studied disorder: childhood-onset schizophrenia. A case report].

UNLABELLED: Childhood-onset schizophrenia is rare: its prevalence is about 50 times lower than the one observed in adulthood. It is also frequently unrecognized, notably because its clinical aspect varies with age. The authors report the case of a prepubertal girl who developed a typical clinical picture of schizophrenia (paranoid subtype) by age 9. CASE REPORT: The patient was 10 years old when she was hospitalized for a relapse of a suspected childhood-onset schizophrenia. Several significant mental disorders were found in her family history: her mother was treated for mood disorders (inclu

Sphingobacterium multivorum cellulitis: case report and mini-review.

BACKGROUND: Sphingobacterium multivorum is a gram-negative, non-fermentative, oxidase-positive, catalase-positive bacillus. S multivorum has been identified in urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, spontaneous peritonitis, septic arthritis, meningitis, bacteraemia and septic shock. Ours is the second case of skin and soft tissue infection sustained by S. multivorum (a case of necrotizing fasciitis with septic shock has been previously reported). In this paper, we furnish a review of the literature on all the cases of S multivorum described in the medical literature (with the

Evaluation of an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the serological diagnosis of canine sarcoptic mange.

Abstract  The purpose of this study was to evaluate a serodiagnostic test (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay; ELISA) for sarcoptic mange in dogs and to characterize the assay antigen, based on the mite Sarcoptes scabiei var. vulpes. The ELISA, applied to sera from 359 dogs suspected of having sarcoptic mange, showed a sensitivity and specificity of 92 and 96%, respectively. Sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) of the antigen employed in the ELISA revealed polypeptide bands with molecular weights ranging between 14 and 164 kDa. In Western blot analyses antigens

Radiotherapy in COVID-19 patient affected by multiple myeloma: a case report.

In COVID-19 pandemic, cancer patients may be vulnerable for their immunological status and need of immunosuppressive anti-neoplastic treatments. Choosing the best treatment option in COVID-19 positive cancer patients is still a challenging issue. We report the case of a 62-year-old woman diagnosed with multiple myeloma and affected by COVID-19. After the diagnosis of multiple myeloma in January 2019, the patient underwent first line therapy followed by bone marrow autologous stem cell transplantation, achieving a complete response in September 2019. In March 2020, the patient showed intrathora

Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM) in a Patient with Complete Heart Block-a Case Report.

UNLABELLED: The ATP-binding cassette, subfamily G, member 2 (ABCG2) transporter, or breast cancer resistance protein (BCRP), plays a crucial role in the absorption and distribution of various compounds, including anti-seizure medications (ASMs). ABCG2 genetic polymorphisms have been shown to affect the pharmacokinetics of several drugs, including anti-cancer drugs and statins. Clinical studies suggested an association between the ABCG2 variations and ASMs pharmacokinetics. Thus, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of the coding ABCG2 variants, 742T > G and 886G > C on the A

Clinical Applications and Future Directions of Minimal Residual Disease Testing in Multiple Myeloma.

In the last years, the life expectancy of multiple myeloma (MM) patients has substantially improved thanks to the availability of many new drugs. Our ability to induce deep responses has improved as well, and the treatment goal in patients tolerating treatment moved from the delay of progression to the induction of the deepest possible response. As a result of these advances, a great scientific effort has been made to redefine response monitoring, resulting in the development and validation of high-sensitivity techniques to detect minimal residual disease (MRD). In 2016, the International Myel

Patient-reported data informing early benefit assessment of rare diseases in Germany: A systematic review.

BackgroundSince the implementation of the Regulation on Patient Integration (2003), the Act on the Reorganization of the Pharmaceutical Market (2011), and the Patient Rights Law (2013), the inclusion of patient perspectives has been further anchored in the German early benefit assessment process. During the assessment of rare disease interventions, patient perspectives are particularly important, as clinical studies are often designed acknowledging small samples and patients suffering from severe symptoms and the chronic course of the disease. Therefore, our research question is whether patien

Acute kidney injury following CAR-T cell therapy: a nephrologist's perspective.

Chimeric antigen receptor T (CAR-T) cell therapy, an emerging personalized immunotherapy for various haematologic malignancies, autoimmune diseases and other conditions, involves the modification of patients' T cells to express a chimeric antigen receptor that recognizes tumour or autoimmune cell antigens, allowing CAR-T cells to destroy cancerous and other target cells selectively. Despite remarkable clinical improvements in patients, multiple adverse effects have been associated with CAR-T cell therapy. Among the most recognized adverse effects are cytokine release syndrome, immune effector
