An EEG correlation framework to study state anxiety and learning under uncertainty.

Objective.Recent developments in computational neuroscience have shed light on the neural processes underlying altered decision-making under uncertainty in anxiety. These disruptions are partly attributed to impaired encoding of precision-weighted prediction errors (pwPEs), which guide belief updating during learning and decision-making, as described by hierarchical Bayesian models. In this paper, we introduce a gamified paradigm for collecting decision-making data, together with a framework for extracting EEG features linked to computationally relevant variables, drawing on principles from ne

Psychophysiological treatment of chronic tinnitus: A review.

Subjective chronic tinnitus consists of a more or less continuous perception of sound in the absence of a corresponding acoustic source, which can lead to various psychological problems like depression, anxiety, attentional deficits and sleep disturbances. The prevalence is 10%-15% of the general population. Various therapy and management options have been proposed, but outcomes vary, and no generally accepted cure exists. In this review, the coherence of the most frequently used aetiological models shall be evaluated, and the efficacy of several treatment options will be discussed. With respe

A novel theta-controlled vibrotactile brain-computer interface to treat chronic pain: a pilot study.

Limitations in chronic pain therapies necessitate novel interventions that are effective, accessible, and safe. Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) provide a promising modality for targeting neuropathology underlying chronic pain by converting recorded neural activity into perceivable outputs. Recent evidence suggests that increased frontal theta power (4-7 Hz) reflects pain relief from chronic and acute pain. Further studies have suggested that vibrotactile stimulation decreases pain intensity in experimental and clinical models. This longitudinal, non-randomized, open-label pilot study's object

Neuromodulatory treatments for chronic pain: efficacy and mechanisms.

Chronic pain is common, and the available treatments do not provide adequate relief for most patients. Neuromodulatory interventions that modify brain processes underlying the experience of pain have the potential to provide substantial relief for some of these patients. The purpose of this Review is to summarize the state of knowledge regarding the efficacy and mechanisms of noninvasive neuromodulatory treatments for chronic pain. The findings provide support for the efficacy and positive side-effect profile of hypnosis, and limited evidence for the potential efficacy of meditation training,

Neurotherapeutics for ADHD: Do they work?

This paper reflects on the use of neurotherapeutics for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). ADHD is the most imaged child psychiatric disorder, with over 3 decades of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) research. Findings are relatively homogeneous compared to other psychiatric conditions with consistent evidence for differences, albeit small, relative to healthy controls in the structure and function of several frontal, parietotemporal, and striatal brain regions as well as their inter-regional structural and functional connections. The functional deficits have been targeted with mo

EEG-fMRI Study of Alpha-Stimulation Neurobiofeedback Training Course.

fMRI-EEG dynamics of brain activity in volunteers was studied during the course of EEG alpha-stimulation training (20 sessions). Twenty-three healthy men (20-35 years) were subjected to 3-fold mapping in a feedback loop (EEG alpha-rhythm biofeedback with acoustic reinforcement). This procedure was performed at the beginning, middle, and end of the course. During the first neurofeedback training session, deactivation (p<0.001) was found in the right angular gyrus, supramarginal, and superior temporal gyri, Brodmann area 39, and cerebellum. Activation (p<0.001) was observed in the medial frontal

The role of neural efficiency, transient hypofrontality and neural proficiency in optimal performance in self-paced sports: a meta-analytic review.

We examined changes in brain rhythms in relation to optimal performance in self-paced sports. Eight studies met the inclusion/exclusion criteria, representing 153 participants and eight different sports. We found that (a) optimal performance is characterised by increased alpha (g = .62, p = .02) and theta (g = .74, p = .002) across the cortex; (b) during optimal performance the frontal lobe is more relaxed (higher alpha; g = 1.06, p = .18) and less busy (lower theta; g = .38, p = .08), in comparison to the other brain lobes; (c) for the same given task, experts' brains are more relaxed (higher

Integrative neurorehabilitation using brain-computer interface: From motor function to mental health after stroke.

Stroke remains a leading cause of mortality and long-term disability worldwide, frequently resulting in impairments in motor control, cognition, and emotional regulation. Conventional rehabilitation approaches, while partially effective, often lack individualization and yield suboptimal outcomes. In recent years, brain-computer interface (BCI) technology has emerged as a promising neurorehabilitation tool by decoding neural signals and providing real-time feedback to enhance neuroplasticity. This review systematically explores the use of BCI systems in post-stroke rehabilitation, focusing on t

Altered parietal multisensory integration in chronic tinnitus during closed-loop real-time fMRI auditory downregulation.

Chronic subjective tinnitus is the most common form of tinnitus and refers to an internal persistent phantom auditory perception. Evidence from neuroimaging studies has established tinnitus and its associated distress as a brain network disorder, with multiple brain regions displaying dysregulated activity or connectivity extending way beyond the auditory pathway. Hyperactivity in the auditory cortex has been associated with perceived tinnitus loudness, and somatosensory-auditory interactions have recently been involved in promising treatment avenues through their disruption using non-invasive

Eye-Tracking and Skin Conductance to Monitor Cognitive Task Engagement.

Neurofeedback is a promising technique for brain rehabilitation and cognitive enhancement; however, it suffers from an inefficacy problem, as more than a third of participants do not learn to regulate their own brain activity. Lack of task engagement, probably related to an inadequate difficulty level, has been proposed among the possible factors that can affect the learning process. Here, we explored the possibility of monitoring cognitive engagement using physiological signals through eye tracking and electrodermal activity. We recorded these signals while participants completed different ta

Urban environmental exposure as a factor in adaptive neuromodulation: a conceptual framework.

Urban neuromodulation and neurofeedback systems have become increasingly adaptive and closed-loop. However, they still focus primarily on brain signals and often ignore the urban areas where these signals happen. The framework introduced in this study integrates EEG, physiological measures, indicators of environmental exposures, and GIS spatial analysis. Our goal is to incorporate Local Climate Zone classification into one unified cycle of user-specific interpretation. Contrary to the typical methodology in digital exposomes and environmental neuroscience, where the individual-to-environment r

Amygdala self-neuromodulation capacity as a window for process-related network recruitment.

Neurofeedback (NF) has emerged as a promising avenue for demonstrating process-related neuroplasticity, enabling self-regulation of brain function. NF targeting the amygdala has drawn attention to therapeutic potential in psychiatry, by potentially harnessing emotion-regulation processes. However, not all individuals respond equally to NF training, possibly owing to varying self-regulation abilities. This underscores the importance of understanding the mechanisms behind successful neuromodulation (i.e. capacity). This study aimed to investigate the establishment and neural correlates of neurom

Intralobular and Interlobular Parietal Functional Network Correlated to MI-BCI Performance.

Brain-computer interface (BCI) brings hope to patients suffering from neuromuscular diseases, by allowing the control of external devices using neural signals from the central nervous system. However, a portion of individuals was unable to operate BCI with high efficacy. This research aimed to study the brain-wide functional connectivity differences that contributed to BCI performance, and investigate the relationship between task-related connectivity strength and BCI performance. Functional connectivity was estimated using pairwise Pearson's correlation from the EEG of 48 subjects performing

Quantitative Electroencephalography Findings in Patients With Diabetes Mellitus.

Objective. Diabetes mellitus (DM) causes structural central nervous system (CNS) impairment, and this situation can be detected by quantitative electroencephalography (QEEG) findings before cognitive impairment is clinically observed. The main aim of this study is to uncover the effect of DM on brain function. Since QEEG reflects the CNS functioning, particularly in cognitive aspects, we expected electrophysiological clues to be found for prevention and follow-up in DM-related cognitive decline. Since a majority of the psychiatric population have cognitive dysfunction, we have given particular
