Image-Guided Placement of Osseointegrated Implants for Challenging Auricular, Orbital, and Rhinectomy Defects.

OBJECTIVES: Prosthetic reconstruction can restore the preoperative form and function after surgery for head and neck malignancies. We demonstrate the use of preoperative planning and intraoperative image guidance for placement of osseointegrated implants to restore craniofacial defects. METHODS: A retrospective review of patients with craniofacial defects treated with image-guided placement of osseointegrated prosthetic implants was performed. RESULTS: Case 1: 55-year-old male who underwent total auriculectomy with anterolateral thigh reconstruction. Case 2: 64-year-old male who required orb

Clinical features and outcomes of four patients with invasive fungal sinusitis.

OBJECTIVE: The frequency of invasive fungal sinusitis (IFS) has increased in recent years with the use of steroids, onset of diabetes mellitus, and the administration of antibacterial agents. We report on the clinical features and outcomes of four patients with IFS involving the cavernous sinus and orbit. Prognostic factors facilitating an early diagnosis are described, and the usefulness of combination therapy involving systemic administration of antifungal agents and surgical intervention is discussed. METHODS: We treated four patients with IFS between March 2003 and November 2007 at Ehime

Late effects of orbital enucleation and radiation on maxillofacial prosthetic rehabilitation: A clinical report.

The retinoblastoma is one of the most common tumors of the eye diagnosed in childhood. The treatment for patients with retinoblastoma includes surgical removal of the lesion along with adjunctive chemotherapy and radiotherapy. If the tumor is controlled, these treatments can have secondary adverse effects pertaining to the growth and development of orofacial structures in young patients. This clinical report describes the prosthetic rehabilitation of a patient who underwent enucleation followed by radiation therapy and adjunctive chemotherapy to treat the primary diagnosis of retinoblastoma. [Treatment results after surgery for basal cell carcinomas of the head and neck region taking into consideration various reconstruction techniques].

BACKGROUND: Basal cell carcinomas are the most frequently occurring malignant tumors in the white population. They exhibit a multitude of histological/morphological forms. PATIENTS AND METHOD: All cases of basal cell carcinoma treated at the department for oral and maxillofacial and regional plastic surgery of the HELIOS hospital in Erfurt between 1976 and 2003 were analyzed and partly reexamined in a retrospective study. RESULTS: A total of 648 patients with 765 basal cell carcinomas were treated. Occurrences in females dominated those in males with a frequency distribution of 1.24:1. The a

Transverse ulnar forearm flap.

INTRODUCTION: The transverse ulnar forearm flap (TUFF) was used to reconstruct different recipient sites in 5 consecutive cases based on the specific requirement for a small thin, hairless flap with a long pedicle. Recent studies have clarified the benefits of the ulnar forearm flap: a less inconspicuous donor site and a primary donor site closure with a radially based fasciocutaneous flap. METHODS: The TUFF is designed with its long axis transverse and distal margin parallel with a wrist flexion crease. An incision is extended proximally along the ulnar artery pedicle as far as the takeoff f

The eye amputated - consequences of eye amputation with emphasis on clinical aspects, phantom eye syndrome and quality of life.

UNLABELLED: In this thesis the term eye amputation (EA) covers the removing of an eye by: evisceration, enucleation and exenteration. Amputation of an eye is most frequently the end-stage in a complicated disease, or the primary treatment in trauma and neoplasm. In 2010 the literature is extensive due to knowledge about types of surgery, implants and surgical technique. However, not much is known about the time past surgery. THE PURPOSE OF THE PHD THESIS WAS: To identify the number of EA, the causative diagnosis and the indication for surgical removal of the eye, the chosen surgical technique

Nonmissile Penetrating Injury to the Head: Experience with 17 Cases.

BACKGROUND: Penetrating nonmissile injuries to the head are far less common than missile penetrating injuries. Here we describe our experience in managing 17 cases of nonmissile injury to the head, likely the largest such series reported to date. We also highlight the surgical steps and techniques used to remove in situ objects (including weapons) in the penetrating wounds that have not been described previously. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of cases of nonmissile, low-velocity penetrating injuries of the head managed in our department. The recorded data of patients with penetr
