Taking their breath away: metabolic responses to low-oxygen levels in anchialine shrimps (Crustacea: Atyidae and Alpheidae).

Crustaceans generally act as oxy-regulators, maintaining constant oxygen uptake as oxygen partial pressures decrease, but when a critical low level is reached, ventilation and aerobic metabolism shut down. Cave-adapted animals, including crustaceans, often show a reduced metabolic rate possibly owing in part to the hypoxic nature of such environments. However, metabolic rates have not been thoroughly explored in crustaceans from anchialine habitats (coastal ponds and caves), which can experience variable oxygenic regimes. Here, an atypical oxy-conforming pattern of oxygen uptake is reported in

The Emerging Role of Prolactin as a Biomarker for Reproduction, Health, and Welfare in Wildlife Species: Elephants as a Model.

Prolactin is a key hormone that plays significant roles in reproduction, extending far beyond its well-known function in mammalian lactation. It is vital for reproductive success across diverse taxa, including birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians, where it regulates critical reproductive behaviors and physiological processes like parental care, pregnancy maintenance, embryonic diapause, immunity, osmoregulation, metamorphosis, and molting. Environmental cues often fine-tune its actions to ensure reproduction occurs under optimal conditions. Conversely, dysregulation of prolactin can severely

Integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses reveal immune-metabolic regulatory mechanisms of Coelomactra antiquata in response to Vibrio harveyi infection.

Coelomactra antiquata is an economically valuable marine cultured bivalve, and its sustainable aquaculture is severely restricted by frequent Vibrio harveyi infection. In this study, optimal infection dosage was screened via mortality statistics, and dynamic changes in physiological-biochemical indices, histopathological lesions, transcriptomic and metabolomic profiles in hepatopancreas were comprehensively investigated between PBS control group (PC) and 1 × 109 CFU/mL V. harveyi infected group (V3) at sequential time points post infection. Physiological results showed that the activities of S

Anti-diuretic hormone ITP signals via a guanylate cyclase receptor to modulate systemic homeostasis in Drosophila.

Insects have evolved a variety of neurohormones that enable them to maintain nutrient and osmotic homeostasis. Here, we characterized the ion transport peptide (ITP) signaling system in Drosophila. The Drosophila ITP gene can generate three different peptide isoforms: ITP amidated (ITPa) and two ITP-like (ITPL1 and ITPL2) isoforms. We comprehensively characterized the expression of all three ITP isoforms in the nervous system and peripheral tissues. Our analyses reveal widespread expression of ITP isoforms. Moreover, we show that ITPa-producing neurons are activated and release ITPa during deh

Taurine decreases arsenic and microplastic toxicity in broccoli (Brassica oleracea L.) through functional and microstructural alterations.

Contamination of vegetables with heavy metals and microplastics is a major environmental and human health concern. This study investigated the role of taurine (TAE) in alleviating arsenic (As) and polyvinyl chloride microplastic (MP) toxicity in broccoli plants. The experiment followed a completely randomized design with four replicates per treatment. Plants were grown in soil spiked with MP (200 mg kg‒1), As (42.8 mg kg‒1), and their combination (As + MP) with or without taurine (TAE; 100 mg L‒1) foliar supplementation. Results demonstrated that MP, As, and As + MP toxicity markedly decreased

Sublethal effects of diclofenac and ibuprofen, individually and in mixture, in a Neotropical fish: A multi-biomarker assessment under environmentally realistic concentrations.

Pharmaceutical contamination of aquatic ecosystems is a growing global concern, particularly in tropical regions where non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as diclofenac (DCF) and ibuprofen (IBU) are frequently detected. This study investigated the sublethal effects of environmentally relevant concentrations of DCF, IBU, as well as their mixture (IBU+DCF) on the freshwater Neotropical fish Astyanax lacustris, using a multi-biomarker approach. Fish were exposed for 7 days, and biomarkers related to oxidative stress, detoxification, osmoregulation, genotoxicity, and endocrine func

Prenatal programming of hypernatremia and hypertension in neonatal lambs.

Maternal water restriction and the accompanying dehydration-induced anorexia may induce long-term physiological changes in offspring. We determined the impact of prenatal hypertonicity (Pre-Dehy) on offspring cardiovascular and osmoregulatory function. Pre-Dehy lambs were exposed to in utero hypernatremia (8- to 10-meq increase; 110-150 days of gestation) induced by maternal water restriction. Control lambs were born to ewes provided ad libitum water and food throughout gestation. After delivery, all ewes were provided ad libitum water and all newborns were allowed ad libitum nursing. Lambs we

Body fluid osmolality and tonicity in preterm infants.

In adult patients, a recent physiological approach for the osmoregulatory system based on body fluid tonicity (the so-called effective osmolality) seems to provide better information on water movements than does the classical body fluid osmolality. To evaluate whether plasma or urinary tonicities could give a better assessment of osmoregulation than plasma and urine osmolalities in sick preterm infants cared for in a NICU. A prospective study was conducted in 30 preterm infants (BW=1284+/-377 g; GA=28.8+/-1.7 weeks). Fifteen consecutive 8-h urine collections were performed for each infant from

Metabolomics identifies tissue-specific trends in butter clams (Saxidomus gigantea) across a subarctic fjord-type estuarine system.

Across the Circumpolar North, harvesting of marine shellfish resources is vital for continued subsistence, recreational, and commercial lifestyles. However, estuarine and intertidal systems of Southcentral Alaska experience landscape-scale challenges due to variable physical characteristics, freshwater discharge, water quality, food availability, and nutritional quality. Additionally, findings in more temperate environments may not be entirely applicable to the subarctic. The continued sustainability of this resource depends largely on our ability to understand and adapt to environmental chall

Evaluation of the Role of the opgGH Operon in Yersinia pseudotuberculosis and Its Deletion during the Emergence of Yersinia pestis.

The opgGH operon encodes glucosyltransferases that synthesize osmoregulated periplasmic glucans (OPGs) from UDP-glucose, using acyl carrier protein (ACP) as a cofactor. OPGs are required for motility, biofilm formation, and virulence in various bacteria. OpgH also sequesters FtsZ in order to regulate cell size according to nutrient availability. Yersinia pestis (the agent of flea-borne plague) lost the opgGH operon during its emergence from the enteropathogen Yersinia pseudotuberculosis. When expressed in OPG-negative strains of Escherichia coli and Dickeya dadantii, opgGH from Y. pseudotuberc

Rab11 regulates trafficking of trans-sialidase to the plasma membrane through the contractile vacuole complex of Trypanosoma cruzi.

Trypanosoma cruzi is the etiologic agent of Chagas disease. Although this is not a free-living organism it has conserved a contractile vacuole complex (CVC) to regulate its osmolarity. This obligate intracellular pathogen is, in addition, dependent on surface proteins to invade its hosts. Here we used a combination of genetic and biochemical approaches to delineate the contribution of the CVC to the traffic of glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored proteins to the plasma membrane of the parasite and promote host invasion. While T. cruzi Rab11 (GFP-TcRab11) localized to the CVC, a dominant

Physiology of invertebrate oxytocin and vasopressin neuropeptides.

Neuropeptides and regulatory peptide hormones control many developmental, physiological and behavioural processes in animals, including humans. The nonapeptides oxytocin and arginine vasopressin are produced and released by the pituitary gland and have actions on many organs and tissues. Receptive cells possess particular receptors to which the peptides bind as ligands, leading to activation of G-protein-coupled receptors, hence cellular responses. In humans and other mammalian species, oxytocin and vasopressin mediate a range of peripheral and central physiological functions that are importan

Effects of exposure to multiple trace metals on biochemical, histological and ultrastructural features of gills of a freshwater fish, Channa punctata Bloch.

The trace metals are frequently encountered as mixtures of essential and non-essential elements. Therefore, evaluation of their toxic effects individually does not offer a realistic estimate of their impact on biological processes. We studied effects of a mixture of four essential and toxic metals (Cu, Cd, Fe and Ni) on biochemical and morphological characteristics of the gills of a biomarker freshwater fish Channa punctata (Bloch) using environmentally relevant concentrations. Fish were exposed to metal mixture through tank water for 7, 15 and 30 days. Biochemical studies as well as light mic

Regulation of arginine vasopressin in the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuresis.

The syndrome of inappropriate antidiuresis (SIAD) is a disorder of sodium and water balance characterized by hypotonic hyponatremia and impaired water excretion in the absence of renal insufficiency, adrenal insufficiency, or any recognized stimulus for the antidiuretic hormone arginine vasopressin (AVP). Hyponatremia is primarily a result of excessive water retention caused by a combination of excessive intake and inappropriate antidiuresis. It is sometimes aggravated by a sodium deficiency caused by decreased intake and/or a secondary natriuresis triggered by and largely corrective of the in

Abnormal regulation of thirst and vasopressin secretion following surgery for craniopharyngioma.

OBJECTIVE: In this study we aimed to establish the frequency of postoperative diabetes insipidus and the incidence and characteristics of abnormalities of thirst in a cohort of patients with craniopharyngioma, in whom neurosurgery had been performed. DESIGN: Diabetes insipidus was determined by either standard criteria for diagnosis in the immediate postoperative period, or by water deprivation test, in all craniopharyngioma and pituitary tumour patients who underwent surgery in Beaumont Hospital between the years 1986 and 1998. Osmoregulated thirst and vasopressin release were studied during

Morphofunctional ontogeny of the urinary system of the European sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax.

European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) are euryhaline fish that tolerate wide salinity fluctuations owing to several morphofunctional adaptations. Among the osmoregulatory sites (tegument, branchial chambers, digestive tract, urinary system), little is known about the kidney and the urinary bladder. The present study describes the ontogeny of the urinary system (kidney and urinary bladder) and focuses on the progressive expression of the Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase in the cells of these ion-transporting epithelia. A structural approach has shown that two pronephric urinary tubules are already present

Salt and water regulation by the leatherback sea turtle Dermochelys coriacea.

We measured the salt and water balance of hatchling leatherback sea turtles, Dermochelys coriacea, during their first few days of life to investigate how they maintain homeostasis under the osmoregulatory challenge of a highly desiccating terrestrial environment and then a hyperosmotic marine environment. Hatchlings desiccated rapidly when denied access to sea water, with their hematocrit increasing significantly from 30.32+/-0.54 % to 38.51+/-1.35 % and plasma Na(+) concentration increasing significantly from 138.2+/-3.3 to 166.2+/-11.2 mmol l(-1) in 12 h. When hatchlings were subsequently pu

The kidney and hypertension in pregnancy: twenty exciting years.

Before 1980 research on the kidney and hypertension during pregnancy was neglected, although these diseases, especially hypertension, are major causes of morbidity to mother and child. The past 20 years, however, has witnessed a striking reversal of this neglect. This review focuses on recent progress in renal physiology, kidney disease, and hypertension as relates to pregnancy. Why do renal hemodynamics increase markedly in pregnancy? Studies have suggested roles for nitric oxide synthase, prostaglandins, endothelin and relaxin. This area of research is exciting, as unraveling why glomerular

Central action of nitric oxide in the saltwater-acclimated duck: modulation of extrarenal sodium excretion and vasotocin release.

Hypothalamic nuclei close to the third ventricle (VIII) represent key structures in avian osmoregulation concerned with the control of salt gland activity and release of the antidiuretic hormone [Arg8]vasotocin (AVT). Nitric oxide (NO) acting as a paracrine transmitter in the hypothalamus has been shown to contribute to the maintenance of salt and fluid balance in mammals. The saltwater-acclimated duck was used in the present study as a well-characterized osmoregulatory model to investigate the role of central NO in hypothalamic perception or integration of osmoregulatory signals in marine bir

Osmoregulatory disruption and metal bioaccumulation in the estuarine fish Centropomus parallelus exposed to settleable atmospheric particulate matter.

Estuarine fishes experience marked environmental variability and rely on tightly regulated osmoregulatory mechanisms to maintain internal homeostasis. Settleable atmospheric particulate matter (SePM), a complex mixture of metals and metalloids, is an emerging stressor in aquatic systems and may interfere with regulatory processes. This study investigated the effects of SePM exposure on osmoregulatory homeostasis in the estuarine fish Centropomus parallelus. Fish were exposed for 96 h to either 0 g.L⁻¹ (control) or 1 g.L⁻¹ SePM, and key physiological endpoints associated with ion and water bala
