Objective: We examined the relationship between factors of middle ear conditions and the outcome of ossiculoplasty in chronic otitis media (COM) by measuring the improvement in the air-bone gap (ABG) and air conduction threshold (TAC). Methods: This retrospective study analyzed 76 patients (77 ears) who underwent ossiculoplasty from among 520 COM patients who underwent tympanoplasty based on the maximum preservation of the original ossicles. The reconstructed ossicular chain was performed by preserving or utilizing the remaining malleus in all cases with the presence of the malleus manubrium.

Objective: To explore the efficacy of ossiculoplasty surgery under oto-endoscope in patients of conductive hearing loss with intact tympanic membrane. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted. The clinical data of 45 patients with conductive hearing loss who had undergone simple ossiculoplasty surgery between October 2015 and December 2017 from five hospitals in China (West China Hospital of Sichuan University, General Hospital of the People's Liberation Army, Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital, Shanghai JiaoTong University School of Medicine, Xijing Hospital, Fourth Military Medical Univers

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the long-term functional hearing outcomes of ossicular chain reconstruction using glass ionomer cement (GIC) by comparing preoperative, early postoperative, and late postoperative audiological results. This study presents one of the limited series in the literature reporting very long-term (up to 12 years) audiological outcomes of ossiculoplasty using GIC.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 45 patients who underwent ossicular chain reconstruction using GIC between 2012 and 2024. Audiological outcomes, including air conduction (AC), bone conduction (BC),

The aim of this study was to compare oval and round window vibroplasty. Eighteen (18) patients implanted with Vibrant Soundbridge (VSB) were enrolled. Two groups were formed depending on FMT placement: on round window in ten cases (RW group) and on oval window in eight (OW group). Pre and postoperative audiological tests were performed both under headphones and free-field settings, VSB on and off. One (1) RW patient experienced sudden hearing loss at the operated side after 4 months from surgery and was excluded from the analysis. Both groups showed good hearing results. Significant difference

BACKGROUND: Characteristic features of cholesteatoma of the middle ear are destruction of the bone and a high tendency for recurrent disease. The choice of surgical procedure is determined by audiological results and the rate of recurrent cholesteatoma.
PATIENTS: One hundred fifty patients who underwent primary cholesteatoma surgery were investigated 3-5 years postoperatively. Preoperative and postoperative audiological results and rate of revision surgery were compared for the respective surgical procedures. All cholesteatomas were treated with an open surgical technique. BACKGROUND: In this retrospective study indications, intraoperative findings, reconstruction techniques and postoperative hearing results in revision stapes surgery were evaluated.
PATIENTS: Between March 1988 and January 1996, 150 patients underwent stapes revision. Indications for surgery were the presence of conductive hearing loss (132), dizziness (12), sensorineural hearing loss (3), deafness (2), and tinnitus (1).
RESULTS: Intraoperative findings were lateral migration of the implant, regrowth of bone in the oval window niche, erosion of incus, cholesteatoma, and others. In most cases

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Multiple techniques of ossicular reconstruction have been advocated for hearing rehabilitation in the setting of chronic otitis media No single method can adequately address the clinical spectrum of disease severity. In the situation of a severely diseased ear requiring a canal wall down (CWD) mastoidectomy in the presence of an intact stapes superstructure, the authors have employed a double cartilage block (DCB) ossiculoplasty. The technique and short-term results are reviewed.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective chart review in a tertiary referral otologic practice.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare the hearing results of incus interposition and bone cement ossiculoplasty in patients with incus long process defects.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety-nine patients with incus long process defects were included. Incus interposition was performed in 49 patients (group 1) and bone cement ossiculoplasty was performed in 50 patients (group 2). Group 1 included 29 female and 20 male patients, with a mean age ± standard deviation of 29.43 ± 12.5 years (range, 8–58 years). Group 2 comprised 32 female and 18 male patients, with a mean age ± standard deviation of 2

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate results of revision stapedectomy with and without use of the laser and determine factors predictive of hearing outcome.
STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: Retrospective review of 356 revision stapedectomy operations performed at the House Ear Clinic, a tertiary neurotologic private practice, between 1983 and 1995.
RESULTS: A postoperative gap of < or =10 dB was obtained in 60% of cases. Results were similar with and without the use of a laser. Sensorineural hearing loss of >10 dB occurred in 7.7%, with 3 (1.4%) ears with profound hearing loss. A poorer outcome was related to in

The authors describe the anatomic and functional results obtained with a sandwich myringoplasty technique (MPL) employing an endaural approach. The suggested technique is a modified sandwich MPL by endaural approach with a reduced Shambaugh incision, a systematic profiling of the canal wall bulge and separation of the meatal and tympano-meatal flaps that are maintained pedunculated. The temporal fascia is inserted between the fibrous layer of the tympanic remnant and a single pedunculated tympano-meatal cutaneous flap replaced in the original location. The authors present 72 cases operated bet

OBJECTIVE: The choice of the graft in ossicular chain reconstruction during middle ear surgery for cholesteatoma is a subject still discussed on. In order to clarify the discussion of reuse of the autologous ossicles obtained during middle ear surgery for cholesteatoma, we evaluated the probability of residual disease histologically and the safety of the ossicles after autoclavization, the most promoting alternative method to eradicate residual cholesteatoma and infection on them.
METHODS: The specimens used in this study were eroded twenty-seven ossicles (22 incuses, 5 malleoli) which were r

Introduction Otosclerosis is a disorder in which the footplate of the stapes is replaced by an abnormal bone, thereby affecting sound transmission to the inner ear at the level of the oval window. The solution to this condition is to reestablish this mechanism back to normal via the ossicular chain to the inner ear. The aim of stapes surgery is to improve the hearing level to thresholds appropriate enough to obviate the need for hearing aid. The hearing improvement achieved after surgery often lasts for many years. The purpose of the current study was to review our experience and find out the

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the long-term safety and efficacy of the Clip coupler attached to the stapes head in patients with unilateral congenital aural atresia (CAA).
METHODS: This single-center retrospective study included 16 Mandarin-speaking patients who had unilateral microtia accompanied by CAA. All patients were divided into two groups: the short-term follow-up group (n = 9) and the long-term follow-up group (n = 7). The floating mass transducer of the Vibrant Soundbridge (VSB) was positioned in the stapes head by the Clip coupler. The safety of the VSB was investigated by comparing preop
