South america's pasture intensification can increase beef production, reduce emissions by 30% and mitigate warming from methane by 2050.

A limited understanding of the potential to reduce emissions and a lack of climate incentives hinder progress toward mitigating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from beef production. This study explored the GHG mitigation potential in South America by evaluating nearly 30 beef cattle production systems across five key beef-producing countries (Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Paraguay, and Uruguay). The study outlined a low-emission beef roadmap for this major beef producing region. Data from this study indicate that the current business-as-usual trajectory of improvements in South America's beef ca

Human T-lymphotropic virus-1 infection among Latin American pregnant women living in Spain.

OBJECTIVES: Human T-lymphotropic virus (HTLV) antenatal screening is not mandatory in Spain. Surveys conducted decades ago reported HTLV-1 seroprevalence rates of 0.2% among foreign pregnant women in Spain. The migrant flow to Spain from HTLV-1 endemic regions in Latin America and sub-Saharan Africa has increased during the last decade. Currently, 25% of pregnant women in Spain are foreigners. METHODS: From January 2021 to October 2023 a cross-sectional study was carried out in all consecutive pregnant women attended at eleven Spanish clinics. A commercial enzyme immunoassay (EIA) was used fo

Application of a Prognostic Scale to Estimate the Mortality of Children Hospitalized with Community-acquired Pneumonia.

BACKGROUND: Pneumonia is a major cause of mortality in children. The objective of this study was to construct a prognostic scale for estimation of mortality applicable to children with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). METHODS: This observational study included patients younger than 15 years with a diagnosis of CAP who were hospitalized between 2004 and 2013. A point-based scoring system based on the modification of the PIRO scale used in adults with pneumonia was applied to each child hospitalized with CAP. It included the following variables: predisposition (age <6 months, comorbidity), i

Epidemiologic response to anthrax outbreaks: field investigations, 1950-2001.

We used unpublished reports, published manuscripts, and communication with investigators to identify and summarize 49 anthrax-related epidemiologic field investigations conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from 1950 to August 2001. Of 41 investigations in which Bacillus anthracis caused human or animal disease, 24 were in agricultural settings, 11 in textile mills, and 6 in other settings. Among the other investigations, two focused on building decontamination, one was a response to bioterrorism threats, and five involved other causes. Knowledge gained in these investiga

Prevalence and non-invasive predictive models of vitamin D insufficiency in Paraguayan youth: the role of body composition and traditional mate consumption.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D (VD) insufficiency among youth remains a latent public health concern in Paraguay, and non-invasive, population-specific screening tools are unestablished. This study aimed to identify clinical, body composition, and lifestyle predictors to develop a preliminary, non-invasive risk scoring system for Paraguayan youth. METHODS: Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels, bioelectrical impedance-derived body composition, and lifestyle habits were evaluated in 164 participants (aged 17-35 years) at the Universidad Santa Clara de Asís. Multivariable logistic regression models were cons

Emerging human cases of sporotrichosis associated with feline outbreaks of Sporothrix brasiliensis in the Argentine Triple Frontier Region.

Sporotrichosis, caused by Sporothrix brasiliensis, is an emerging zoonotic mycosis that poses increasing risks in Latin America, particularly in underserved urban areas, with intensified human-animal-environmental interactions. Recently, Puerto Iguazú, Misiones, Argentina, a biodiversity hotspot in the Triple Frontier (Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay), reported outbreaks suggestive of sustained feline sporotrichosis transmission. This prospective, observational study used passive surveillance, set in a One Health framework, to characterize the epidemiological features of feline sporotrichosis

The Latin American network for congenital malformation surveillance: ReLAMC.

The early detection of congenital anomaly epidemics occurs when comparing current with previous frequencies in the same population. The success of epidemiologic surveillance depends on numerous factors, including the accuracy of the rates available in the base period, wide population coverage, and short periodicity of analysis. This study aims to describe the Latin American network of congenital malformation surveillance: ReLAMC, created to increase epidemiologic surveillance in Latin America. We describe the main steps, tasks, strategies used, and preliminary results. From 2017 to 2019, five

Moving Beyond GDP: Cost Effectiveness of Cochlear Implantation and Deaf Education in Latin America.

HYPOTHESIS: Cochlear implantation (CI) and deaf education are cost effective management strategies of childhood profound sensorineural hearing loss in Latin America. BACKGROUND: CI has been widely established as cost effective in North America and Europe and is considered standard of care in those regions, yet cost effectiveness in other economic environments has not been explored. With 80% of the global hearing loss burden existing in low- and middle-income countries, developing cost effective management strategies in these settings is essential. This analysis represents the continuation of

Uncovering the Fusarium community associated with Hemileia leaf rusts and coffee from Africa and South America.

A survey of fungi found overgrowing and colonizing pustules of coffee leaf rusts, caused by species of the genus Hemileia, and also occurring as endophytes of Coffea, was conducted in Africa (Cameroon-Ca and Ethiopia - Et) and South America (Brazil - Br and Paraguay-Pa). Among the significant groups of fungi collected as putative mycoparasites of Hemileia, 93 isolates belonged to the genus Fusarium and Neocosmospora. Eight Fusarium coffee endophyte isolates were independently obtained from Brazil and added to the assemblage of isolates. A polyphasic taxonomic study was conducted involving cult
