Lymph node abscess due to Actinomyces viscosus in a cat.

In a four-year-old male cat, a subcutaneous phyma about 3.5 cm in diameter was surgically removed from the left inframandibular region. Histopathologically, the phyma was found to be the swollen medial retropharyngeal lymph node containing an actinomycotic abscess. The filamentous organisms in the abscess stained positively by the Gram's, Grocott's and periodic acid-Schiff methods, and were negative by the Ziehl-Neelsen method. By the immunoperoxidase method, the organisms were specifically identified as Actinomyces viscosus serotype 2 by its antiserum absorbed with A. viscosus serotype 1 anti

[Uveitis: late complication of undiagnosed Whipple disease].

We report a case of severe chronic bilateral uveitis in a 60-year-old white man without neurological manifestations. Spondylarthritis and isolated malabsorption suggested the diagnosis of Whipple's disease. A normal duodenal biopsy delated the diagnosis, who was secondarily demonstrated an adenopathy biopsy and macrophage study on vitrectomy sample (macrophage distended by periodic acid-Schiff positive material). With 1 year follow-up the uveitis was rapidly and completely cured by an antibiotic association (rifampicin and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazol). The characteristics of ocular involvemen

Abnormal sclerocytes in nanophthalmos.

Scleral tissue from a nanophthalmic patient was examined morphologically and by a tissue culture method. Collagen in the unusually thickened scleral tissue was arranged in irregularly interlacing bundles. Results of tissue culture studies showed sclerocytes that seemed to secrete many granules that stained positively with Alcian blue and periodic acid-Schiff (PAS). No granules were seen in cells of scleral tissue cultured from two control eyes. These findings may be the result of the modified glycosaminoglycan metabolism, which in turn contributes to the abnormal packing of collagen bundles an

Subcutaneous Whipple's disease.

Cutaneous findings in Whipple's disease are rare and often exhibit nonspecific lesions such as hyperpigmentation, subcutaneous nodules, and erythema nodosum. A 37-year-old black man with previously documented Whipple's disease developed soft, subcutaneous nodules on the chin, neck and extremities. Biopsy of these nodules showed a nonspecific panniculitis and intracellular inclusions stained by periodic acid-Schiff reagent. The inclusions were of the type thought characteristic of Whipple's disease. These findings indicate that patients with Whipple's disease can have characteristic skin findin

Picornavirus-like inclusions in polymyositis--aggregation of glycogen particles of the same size.

We studied picornavirus-like inclusions in muscle of a 66-year-old man with chronic polymyositis. Inoculation of a muscle homogenate to suckling mice and VeRo cells failed to detect any virus. After treatment of ultrathin sections with 2% amylase, individual particles that constituted inclusions were digested, as were free glycogen particles in the same section. Particles of the inclusions were stained with periodic acid-thiocarbohydrazide-silver proteinate and alkaline-bismuth, as were glycogen particles. The picornavirus-like inclusions seemed to consist of glycogen particles than form a cry

Supramolecular Assembly of Collagen-Mimetic Peptide D-Periodic Fibrils and Nanoassemblies.

The collagen triple helix assembles hierarchically into bundled oligomers, solvated networks, and fibers. Synthetic peptide assemblies, driven by supramolecular interactions, can form single triple helices through intrahelical amino acid pairs; however, the principles guiding interhelical associations into higher-order structures remain unclear. Here, we incorporate cation-π and electrostatic charge pairs to probe interhelical interactions and elucidate the mechanisms driving triple helix assembly into fibrils, nanotubes, and nanosheets. Introducing cation-π pairs into a fibrillating collagen

Real-Time Observation of Macroscopic Hierarchical Pattern Formation in a Minimal Chemical System via Reaction-Induced Phase Separation.

Spatially periodic patterns have been widely studied in chemical and biological systems, yet the emergence of hierarchical or multiscale architectures remains less explored experimentally, particularly in minimal material frameworks. In this work, it was observed in real time that a simple two-component solution consisting of methyltrimethoxysilane and phytic acid spontaneously forms macroscale hierarchical patterns upon exposure to air. Spectroscopic analyses reveal that chemical reactions initiated by environmental moisture drive sol-gel condensation and reaction-induced phase separation (RI

[Serous cystadenoma of the pancreas showing enlargement on images: a case report].

Serious Cystadenoma (SCA) of the Pancreas is seldom malignant and is usually monitored over time. Here we report a case of SCA an enlarged cyst that had to be excised because it was difficult to diagnose by intraductal papillary-mucinous neoplasm (IPMN). The patient was a 58-year-old woman with thecoma of the right ovary accompanied by Meigs syndrome, who had undergone abdominal total hysterectomy and bilateral oophorectomy. Abdominal computed tomography scan (CT) showed a multilocular cyst 2.4 cm in diameter in the head of the pancreas. Fourteen months later, a periodic CT showed that the mul

An unusual cause of thyrotoxic periodic paralysis: triiodothyronine-containing weight reducing agents.

Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis resulting from exogenous thyroid hormone administration (thyrotoxicosis factitia) has been rarely reported. We describe a 23-year-old man who presented with limbs paralysis upon awakening in the morning. Pertinent history revealed that he took drugs containing triiodothyronine (64 mug) and propranolol (40 mg) twice daily for weight reduction in the past month and discontinued these drugs 3 days before admission. Physical examination showed systolic hypertension (160/76 mm Hg), relative tachycardia (98 bpm), and symmetrical flaccid paralysis of all extremities. The

Hyper-IgD syndrome with novel mutation in a Japanese girl.

Hyperimmunoglobulin D and periodic fever syndrome (HIDS) is an autosomal recessive auto-inflammatory disorder characterized by recurrent febrile attacks with lymphadenopathy, abdominal distress, skin eruptions and joint involvement. We discuss the case of a 15-year-old Japanese girl who had presented with periodic fever, hepatosplenomegaly and intractable diarrhea from seven weeks of age. At first, undifferentiated autoimmune disorder was suspected, and she was treated with prednisolone and, in turn, with immunosuppressants such as cyclosporine, methotrexate, cyclophosphamide and rituximab or

Intestinal mucormycosis in a captive tiger.

Mucormycosis is an angioinvasive fungal infection caused by ubiquitous saprophytic fungi of the order Mucorales. In humans, the infection is generally caused by inhalation of spores or traumatic inoculation in cutaneous wounds, typically affecting immunocompromised patients. In animals, Mucorales infection is common in cattle, but is rare in the other species, including felids. No cases of mucormycosis have been reported to date in non-domestic felids, to our knowledge. We describe a case of mucormycosis in a 5-y-old female captive tiger (Panthera tigris). The affected tiger was part of a grou

Two Siblings With Recurrent Fevers: The Path to Mevalonate Kinase Deficiency Diagnosis.

Systemic autoinflammatory diseases (SAIDs) are a group of disorders that constitute a rare cause of recurrent fevers. Recurrent fevers are defined as periodic febrile episodes lasting from days to weeks, separated by symptom-free intervals of variable duration. They present multiple etiologies, representing a diagnostic challenge. Mevalonate kinase deficiency (MKD) is a genetic SAID, a rare hereditary recurrent fever syndrome (HRF) caused by pathogenic variants in the mevalonate kinase (MVK) gene. It is characterized by the early onset of periodic fever flares, frequently associated with joint

Topography of the external surface of the human red blood cell membrane studied with a nonpenetrating label, [125I]diazodiiodosulfanilic acid.

The topography of the external surface of the human red cell membrane has been studied using an impermeant radioactive probe, [125I]diazodiiodosulfanilic acid, which binds covalently to protein groups of the membrane following reaction with intact cells. The pattern of labeling was assessed by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide disc gel electrophoresis followed by sequential analysis of single gels for carbohydrates (by staining with the periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) reagent), for proteins (by staining with Coomassie blue), and for radioactivity (by counting gels sliced in 2-mm segments). Systemic mucormycosis caused by Rhizopus microsporus in a captive bottlenose dolphin.

A 6-year-old female bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) kept in dolphinarium died after a 3.5-month period of lethargy and inappetence despite antibiotics and supportive care. At necropsy, gross findings included diffuse varying-sized nodules in the lungs and scattered nodules throughout the heart, spleen, mesenteric and hilar lymph node and kidney. Microscopically, the lesions were characterised by disseminated fungal pyogranulomas with numerous intralesional Mucor-like fungi. The fungi structures were demonstrated by Periodic acid-Schiff and Gomori methenamine silver stain. Molecular ana

Malignant mesothelioma masquerading as a multinodular bronchioloalveolar cell adenocarcinoma with widespread pulmonary nodules.

A 72-year-old man had a unilateral pleural effusion and multiple bilateral pulmonary nodules. Thoracoscopic biopsy revealed multiple discrete nodules in the pleura and lung. The latter consisted of tall columnar malignant cells arranged on alveolar surfaces in a lepidic growth pattern. Mucin filled the alveolar lumina, both in the nodules and surrounding lung. It stained with Alcian blue but not with periodic acid Schiff, suggesting that it was a glycosaminoglycan, which was confirmed as hyaluronic acid by complete digestion with hyaluronidase. Tumor cells were calretinin, Wilms tumor-1, and h

A neoplasm of globule leukocytes in a cat.

A neoplasm involving the ileo-cecal-colic junction, thymus, and tracheobronchial lymph nodes of a 7-year-old domestic cat was composed of dense sheets of round to oval mononuclear cells with oval to indented nuclei, moderate amounts of cytoplasm, and variable numbers of round eosinophilic granules. These granules are brown to black in phosphotungstic acid hematoxylin-stained sections and stain variably with the periodic acid-Schiff stain. They are 0.8 to 1.5 micron in diameter, limited by a single unit membrane, and have variable electron density. Light microscopic cellular morphology and stai

Unsuspected Conjunctival Orbital Dermoid Cyst: Aids in Diagnosis.

A 25-year-old man with Type 1 diabetes mellitus experienced rapid visual decline and was scheduled for right cataract surgery. At the time of administering an inferotemporal retrobulbar block, a white discharge appeared spontaneously on the surface of the globe. Superotemporally a cyst was found and its contents were subtotally evacuated. Microscopically, eosinophilic, acellular material with chatter artifact and small vacuoles was detected and initially thought to represent a lens choristoma. This material stained moderately with the periodic acid Schiff method and was focally Congo red posit

A toddler with facial nodules: a case of idiopathic facial aseptic granuloma.

We describe the case of a 3-year-old boy who presented with several asymptomatic facial nodules present for six months. A skin biopsy obtained from the nodules showed a moderately well-defined granuloma in the superficial and deep dermis. A squamous epithelial lined cyst, extravasated keratin, or shadow cells were not identified. Bartonella henselae titers and the Coccidioidomycosis immitis immunodiffusion test were negative; a Tuberculin Skin Test was non-reactive. Fite, Periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) and Gomori-Grocott methenamine silver (GMS) stains failed to identify microorganisms. In additio

Multifocal rhabdomyosarcomas within the tongue and oral cavity of a dog.

A 10-year-old terrier crossbreed presented with a change in bark intonation of 3-4 month's duration and pronounced panting. Four variably sized masses were observed within the oral cavity. The largest mass was located within the parenchyma at the caudal region of the tongue. Others were located on the left arytenoid, within the soft palate, and in the oropharynx above the soft palate. Histopathologic specimens consisted of large round to polygonal cells occasionally containing multiple nuclei and rare faint cytoplasmic cross striations. Staining was weakly positive with periodic acid-Schiff. I

Ultrastructural and histochemical observations on intracellular and luminal microcalculi in the feline sublingual salivary gland.

As the genesis of salivary calculi in man has not been established, the fortuitous observation of microcalculi in sublingual glands of cats prompted this study. Microcalculi were seen occasionally within acinar cells and lumina and macrophages, and rarely interstitially. Microcalculi were stained with the periodic-acid/Schiff technique, and acid-phosphatase activity was associated with intracellular microcalculi. Intracellular microcalculi were seen ultrastructurally in acinar cells in membrane-bound vacuoles that also contained debris and sometimes what appeared to be secretory material. X-ra
