Trait attentional control influences the relationship between repetitive negative thinking and psychopathology symptoms.

Repetitive negative thinking (RNT) has been implicated in several disorders (e.g., Clark (2005)). However, little research has examined how RNT influences other risk factors of psychopathology, such as attentional control. This study used prospective methodology to determine if relationships among various RNT styles and symptoms of psychological disorders are indirectly influenced by facets of attentional control. The sample included 376 participants who completed measures of RNT (worry, rumination, anticipatory processing, obsessions, intrusive thoughts and panic cognitions), psychopathology

The interaction between 5-HTTLPR genotype and ruminative thinking on BMI.

Negative affect or stress is often found to increase energy intake for high palatable energy-rich foods and hence weight gain. Reduced brain serotonin (5-HT) function is known to increase stress vulnerability and the risk for eating-related disturbances. A short (S) allele polymorphism in the serotonin transporter gene (5-HTTLPR) is associated with a less efficient functioning brain serotonin system and therefore higher stress vulnerability. It has been suggested that this genotype may be directly linked to an increased risk for weight gain and/or obesity. However, a high amount of variability

The clinical characterization of the adult patient with depression aimed at personalization of management.

Depression is widely acknowledged to be a heterogeneous entity, and the need to further characterize the individual patient who has received this diagnosis in order to personalize the management plan has been repeatedly emphasized. However, the research evidence that should guide this personalization is at present fragmentary, and the selection of treatment is usually based on the clinician's and/or the patient's preference and on safety issues, in a trial-and-error fashion, paying little attention to the particular features of the specific case. This may be one of the reasons why the majority

Continuous Improvement of Chronic Tinnitus Through a 9-Month Smartphone-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus is the perception of sound without an external auditive stimulus and can be a severe burden for affected patients. Medical guidelines recommend cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for tinnitus treatment, which effectively improves tinnitus-related distress and anxiety. OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the outcome of a 9-month smartphone-based CBT for patients with tinnitus. METHODS: The randomized controlled clinical trial in this study investigates the efficacy of a smartphone-based CBT for 187 patients with chronic tinnitus over a 9-month treatment period. In the init

Surgery for intracerebral hemorrhage: new evidence and changing perspectives.

Spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) remains the most devastating form of stroke, with limited evidence supporting surgical intervention. Traditional craniotomy has shown no clear benefit in improving long-term outcomes, largely due to procedural invasiveness, delayed timing, and heterogeneous patient selection. Recently, three randomized controlled trials, the ENRICH, MIND, and SWITCH studies, re-examined the surgical management of ICH using distinct approaches and patient populations. The ENRICH trial evaluated early minimally invasive parafascicular surgery (MIPS) for lobar and anteri

Light Pareto robust optimization for IMRT treatment planning.

BACKGROUND: Robust optimization (RO) has been proposed to mitigate breathing motion uncertainty during treatment in intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) planning for breast or lung cancer. RO is a pessimistic approach that implicitly trades off average-case for worst-case treatment plan quality. Pareto robust optimization (PRO) provides a mechanism for improving nonworst-case plan outcomes, but often remains overly conservative in the average case. PURPOSE: The goal of this study is to characterize the trade-off between the optimality of robust IMRT plans in the worst case and the tre

Effect of written outcome information on attitude of perinatal healthcare professionals at the limit of viability: a randomized study.

BACKGROUND: Differences in perception and potential disagreements between parents and professionals regarding the attitude for resuscitation at the limit of viability are common. This study evaluated in healthcare professionals whether the decision to resuscitate at the limit of viability (intensive care versus comfort care) are influenced by the way information on incurred risks is given or received. METHODS: This is a prospective randomized controlled study. This study evaluated the attitude of healthcare professionals by testing the effect of information given through graphic fact sheets f

America's perceptions of opioid related impairment: A national randomized study examining how different individuals may stigmatize addiction in response to different terminology.

INTRODUCTION: Prior research has found that different ways of describing opioid-related impairment influences the types and degrees of stigmatizing beliefs held by the American public. In this study we examined the extent to which different characteristics of the American public (i.e., age, gender, race/ethnicity, religiosity, sexual orientation, political affiliation, personal history of addiction/mental health problem) are associated with holding different types and degrees of stigmatizing beliefs when asked to consider someone treated for opioid-related impairment. We also assessed whether

Rapid recovery from major depression using magnesium treatment.

Major depression is a mood disorder characterized by a sense of inadequacy, despondency, decreased activity, pessimism, anhedonia and sadness where these symptoms severely disrupt and adversely affect the person's life, sometimes to such an extent that suicide is attempted or results. Antidepressant drugs are not always effective and some have been accused of causing an increased number of suicides particularly in young people. Magnesium deficiency is well known to produce neuropathologies. Only 16% of the magnesium found in whole wheat remains in refined flour, and magnesium has been removed

Clinician views on best practice community care for people with complex emotional needs and how it can be achieved: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with Complex Emotional Needs (CEN) services, a working description to refer to the needs experienced by people who may have been diagnosed with a "personality disorder", face premature mortality, high rates of co-morbidity, service user and treatment costs. Service provision for this population is recurrently identified as needing to be transformed: there are serious concerns about quality, accessibility, fragmentation of the service system and the stigma and therapeutic pessimism service users encounter. Understanding clinician perspectives is vital for service transfo

How mental health status and attitudes toward mental health shape AI Acceptance in psychosocial care: a cross-sectional analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become part of our everyday lives and is also increasingly applied in psychosocial healthcare as it can enhance it, make it more accessible, and reduce barriers for help seeking. User behaviour and readiness for AI can be predicted by various factors, such as perceived usefulness (PU) of AI, personality traits and mental health-related variables. Investigating these factors is essential for understanding user acceptance and the future use of AI tools in mental health. This study examines the individual factors that influence the PU of AI in mental

Breast cancer awareness, risk factors and screening practices among future health professionals in Ghana: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Like many other women in the developing world, the practice of breast cancer screening among Ghanaian women is unsatisfactory. As a result, many cases are diagnosed at advanced stages leading to poor outcomes including mortalities. An understanding of the awareness and predictors of breast examination is an important first step that may guide the design of interventions aimed at raising awareness across the general population. This study aimed to explore the awareness, risk factors, and self-reported screening practices of breast cancer among female undergraduate students at the Un

Living with systemic lupus erythematosus in South Africa: a bitter pill to swallow.

BACKGROUND: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) often has a profound negative impact on health-related quality of life (HRQoL). In the absence of any qualitative studies in sub-Saharan Africa, we undertook a study to explore living experiences, perceptions and unmet needs of South African patients with SLE. METHODS: Twenty-five women with SLE consented to participate in the study. They underwent individual in-depth interviews exploring their physical concerns, emotional health, sexual well-being and fertility. NVivo software was used for analysis. RESULTS: Participants were either of black an

Biology of Perseverative Negative Thinking: The Role of Timing and Folate Intake.

Past-oriented rumination and future-oriented worry are two aspects of perseverative negative thinking related to the neuroticism endophenotype and associated with depression and anxiety. Our present aim was to investigate the genomic background of these two aspects of perseverative negative thinking within separate groups of individuals with suboptimal versus optimal folate intake. We conducted a genome-wide association study in the UK Biobank database (n = 72,621) on the "rumination" and "worry" items of the Eysenck Personality Inventory Neuroticism scale in these separate groups. Optimal fol

Psychosocial determinants of cardiovascular events among black Americans with chronic kidney disease or associated risk factors in the Jackson heart study.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD), hypertension (HTN), or diabetes mellitus (DM) are at increased risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD). The extent to which psychosocial factors are associated with increased CVD risk within these individuals is unclear. Black individuals experience a high degree of psychosocial stressors due to socioeconomic factors, environment, racism, and discrimination. We examined the association between psychosocial factors and risk of CVD events among Black men and women with CKD and CKD risk factors in the Jackson Heart Study. METHODS AND RESUL

Optimistic, realistic, and pessimistic illness perceptions; quality of life; and survival among 2457 cancer survivors: the population-based PROFILES registry.

BACKGROUND: Threatening illness perceptions (IPs) have been associated with poorer health outcomes. However, to the authors' knowledge, it remains unclear whether threatening IPs that are consistent with disease severity are equally harmful. The aim of the current study was to: 1) identify subgroups of cancer survivors based on IPs and prognosis; and 2) assess the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and survival associated with these subgroups. METHODS: The authors used survey data from the population-based Patient Reported Outcomes Following Initial treatment and Long term Evaluation of S

Patient-specific psychological characteristics and personality structure affect functional outcomes after surgical stabilization of acute and chronic acromioclavicular joint injuries.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the impact of psychological factors on functional outcomes of patients undergoing isolated acromioclavicular joint (ACJ) stabilization for acute and chronic ACJ injuries. METHODS: Patients who underwent ACJ stabilization between January 2015 and December 2021 and had a minimum follow-up of 2 years were analysed. Functional outcome measures included Constant-Murley (CM), American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES), Nottingham Clavicle (NC) scores and the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for pain. Baseline Kinesiophobia and Pain Catastrophizing Scores Predict Prolonged Postoperative Shoulder Pain.

BACKGROUND: Chronic postsurgical pain remains a major hurdle in postoperative management, especially in patients undergoing shoulder surgery, for whom persistent pain rates are higher than for any other surgical site. Little is known about pain beliefs and attitudes as preoperative predictors of postoperative pain following nonarthroplasty shoulder surgery. OBJECTIVES: We evaluated predictors of pain following nonarthroplasty shoulder surgery, hypothesizing that preoperative kinesiophobia, pain catastrophizing, and neuropathic pain scores are predictive of greater postoperative pain. [Therapeutic strategies in the first psychotic episode].

A first psychotic episode includes a wide range of disorders with different outcomes: schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, schizophreniform disorder, schizoaffective disorder, drug-induced psychosis, brief reactive psychosis, organic psychoses and delusional disorder. The course and outcome of a first psychotic episode is greatly dependent on its initial management. Major clinical, etiopathogenic and therapeutic advances have been achieved in this field and have allowed specific management strategies to be adopted. The primary task of therapists involved in the management of patients who have expe

Living Lab Data of Patient Needs and Expectations for eHealth-Based Cardiac Rehabilitation in Germany and Spain From the TIMELY Study: Cross-Sectional Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The use of eHealth technology in cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is a promising approach to enhance patient outcomes since adherence to healthy lifestyles and risk factor management during phase III CR maintenance is often poorly supported. However, patients' needs and expectations have not been extensively analyzed to inform the design of such eHealth solutions. OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to provide a detailed patient perspective on the most important functionalities to include in an eHealth solution to assist them in phase III CR maintenance.
