Family participation in determination of FIM and Barthel indices.

Functional Independence Measure (FIM) is a basic indicator of severity of disability, and is used for measurement of functional independence. The aim of this paper is to present our initial experiences in the application of FIM. It needs to be noted that we have had an incomplete team in implementation of this project, and also that we have involved the patients and their families in the measurement of FIM. We selected a small sample of 23 patients, and measured their FIM and Barthel index both at the admission and discharge from the hospital. We do accept that this sample may be too small for

Evidence-based treatment of hip and pelvic injuries in runners.

The runner is especially at risk for development of injury to the hip and pelvis secondary to chronic repetitive microtrauma. The key to treatment is establishing complete and accurate diagnosis, and, in particular, identifying the functional biomechanical deficits in the kinetic chain that contribute to this repetitive microtrauma. A long-term successful outcome and prevention of reinjury are more likely if the focus of rehabilitation is on the restoration of the functional kinetic chain, rather than on a specific injured tissue. For example, the typical treatment of "iliotibial band syndrome

Shared Decision-Making With Otolaryngologists and Palliative Care Specialists in Oral Cavity Cancer.

IMPORTANCE: Advanced oral cavity cancer greatly affects vital functions, physical symptoms, psychological well-being, and social interactions. Early integration of palliative care is essential to address these burdens, yet access often remains limited, with many patients referred only near the end of life. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether the shared decision-making with otolaryngologists and palliative care specialists (SOP) model is associated with increased palliative care utilization among patients with advanced oral cavity cancer before death. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This prospe

Interdisciplinary pain program participants with high catastrophizing scores improve function utilizing enriched therapeutic encounters and integrative health techniques: a retrospective study.

INTRODUCTION: Pain catastrophizing describes helplessness, rumination, and magnification of a pain experience. High pain catastrophizing is an independent risk factor for disability, pain severity, inadequate treatment response, chronicity, and opioid misuse. Interdisciplinary pain programs (IPPs) are beneficial and cost-effective for individuals with chronic pain, but their functional impact on individuals with high pain catastrophizing is not well established. The emerging field of placebo studies suggests that patient-provider relationships, positive treatment expectations, and sociobiologi

A multidisciplinary approach to post-operative fragility hip fracture care in Thailand - a narrative review.

INTRODUCTION: Appropriate care and rehabilitation following surgery for fragility hip fractures in older adults is associated with better outcomes and a greater likelihood of achieving pre-injury functioning. Clinical guidelines specifically for the post-operative care and rehabilitation of patients with hip fractures are scarce; as such, country-specific protocols benchmarked against established guidelines are essential given the wide variation in cultures and beliefs, clinical practice and diverse healthcare systems in Asia. We aimed to provide clinically relevant recommendations for post-op

When the practice does not meet the theory: results from an Italian survey on the clinical and pathway management of inpatients with decompressive craniectomy or cranioplasty admitted to rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: Cranioplasty (CP) is supposed to improve the functional outcome of severe acquired brain injury (sABI) patients with decompressive craniectomy (DC). However, ongoing controversies exist regarding its indications, optimum materials, timing, complications, and relationships with hydrocephalus (HC). For these reasons, an International Consensus Conference (ICC) on CP in traumatic brain injury (TBI) was held in June 2018 to issue some recommendations. AIM: The aims of this study were: to investigate cross-sectionally before the ICC the prevalence of DC/CP in sABI inpatients admitted t

[Vestibular Disorders in the Pediatric Age: Retrospective Analysis and Review of the Literature].

INTRODUCTION: Vestibular disorders in pediatric patients is still a controversial subject but has gained relevance over the years. In recent studies, its prevalence varied between 0.7% and 15%. Nevertheless, the true prevalence can be underestimated given that its clinical presentation is expressed compared to adults; it can present as rotatory vertigo, but It can also cause vision complaints, headaches, motor delay, and learning disability. Although middle ear effusion is considered the main cause of vestibular dysfunction in this age group, other diagnoses should be considered. The aim of th

Physician variation in diagnostic testing for low back pain. Who you see is what you get.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined patterns of diagnostic test use for patients with low back pain. Three specific questions were addressed: 1) What tests do physicians recommend for patients with 3 common types of low back pain? 2) Do physicians in various specialties differ in the tests they would order? and 3) How appropriate are physicians' choices of tests, based on current medical knowledge and expert recommendations? METHODS: A stratified national random sample of 2,604 physicians in 8 specialties was mailed questionnaires asking about the tests they would order for hypothetical patients w

Evaluation of Rehabilitation Outcomes in Patients with Chronic Neurological Health Conditions Using a Machine Learning Approach.

Background: Over one billion people worldwide suffer from neurological conditions that cause mobility impairments, often persisting despite rehabilitation. Chronic neurological disease (CND) patients who lack access to continuous rehabilitation face gradual functional decline. The International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) provides a comprehensive framework for assessing these patients. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the outcomes of a non-hospitalized neuromotor rehabilitation project for CND patients in Italy using the Barthel Index (BI) as the primary o

Prevalence of function-limiting late effects in Hodgkin lymphoma survivors.

BACKGROUND: Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) is highly curable, but survivors often develop function-limiting impairments. Screening guidelines for neuromuscular and musculoskeletal late effects are not as well recognized across medical disciplines. Early identification and management of functional late effects are instrumental in improving the longitudinal care of HL survivors. OBJECTIVE: To define the prevalence of neuromuscular, musculoskeletal, visceral, oncologic, and other late effects affecting function and quality of life (QOL) in HL survivors. DESIGN: A retrospective cohort analysis. SETTING:
