Parameterization and prediction of environment-dependent colloid transport in saturated porous media: A physics-informed machine learning approach.

Colloid transport in porous media exhibits pronounced variability under varying solution chemistry, hydrodynamic conditions, and pore structural characteristics. Conventional advection-dispersion models typically treat transport parameters as constants, which limits their predictive capability across variable environmental conditions. This study develops a physics-informed machine learning (ML) framework to parameterize and predict colloid transport under varying environmental conditions by deriving explicit expressions for key transport parameters. Built on 98 column-scale experimental record

Exploring a New Regime of Molecular Orbital Physics in 4d Cluster Magnets with Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering.

Molecular orbital systems with clusters of heavy transition metal (TM) ions are one of the most important classes of model materials for studying the interplay between local physics and effects of itinerancy. Despite a large number of candidates identified in the family of 4d TM materials, an understanding of their physics from competing microscopic energy scales is still missing. We bridge this gap by reporting the first resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurement on a well-known series of Ru cluster magnets with a 6H-perovskite structure Ba_{3}MRu_{2}O_{9} (M^{3+}=In^{3+}, Y^{3+},

Spin-orbit-controlled correlation physics and orbital-selective electronic transitions in uranium monoxide revealed by many-body calculations.

We present a comprehensive study of the temperature-dependent electronic structure in uranium monoxide (UO) using the local density approximation (LDA) combined with dynamical mean-field theory (LDA + DMFT). Our calculations reveal orbital-selective electronic transitions driven by relativistic spin-orbit coupling, leading to metallic 5f5/2 states and insulating 5f7/2 states. These transitions are robust against thermal perturbations, suggesting a many-body protection mechanism. We observe significant quasiparticle renormalization and non-Fermi liquid signatures near the Fermi level. Thermal a

How Feasible Is Docking of PROTACs to POI-E3L Complexes? Testing Physics-Based and ML-Based Docking Tools.

Targeted protein degradation (TPD) is an innovative drug discovery approach that leverages small molecules to induce proximity between a protein of interest (POI) and an E3 ubiquitin ligase (E3L) for selective degradation. Among TPD modalities, proteolysis-targeting chimeras (PROTACs) present unique challenges for computational modeling due to their size, flexibility, and complex binding interactions. This study evaluates the performance of physics-based and machine learning (ML)-based docking tools for modeling PROTAC-mediated ternary complexes in self-docking and cross-docking scenarios. A b

Physics-Informed Learning Framework for Lower Limb Kinematic Prediction With Sparse Sensors and Its Application in Chronic Stroke.

Kinematic evaluation of gait is critical for biomechanical analysis and disease diagnosis. Stroke survivors, due to unilateral motor impairments, often exhibit asymmetric gait patterns, significantly altering lower limb joint kinematics. Accurate measurement of lower limb joint angles enables therapists to assess the functional status of stroke patients, thereby promoting the rehabilitation process. Although optical motion capture systems provide precise measurements, their use is constrained to laboratory and clinical settings. Inertial measurement units (IMUs) offer a promising wearable alte

Enhancing Empirical Energy Functions Using Physics- and Machine Learning-Based Extensions: Structure, Dynamics and Spectroscopy of Modified Benzenes.

The effects of replacing individual contributions to an empirical energy function are assessed for halogenated benzenes (X-Bz, X = H, F, Cl, Br) and chlorinated phenols (Cl-PhOH). Introducing electrostatic models based on minimal distributed charges (MDCM) instead of usual atom-centered point charges (PCs) to realistically describe features such as σ-holes yields overestimated hydration free energies unless the van der Waals parameters are reparametrized. Scaling van der Waals ranges by 10% to 20% for three Cl-PhOH and most X-Bz yield results within experimental error bars, which is encouragin

Pinning down the accuracy of physics-informed neural networks under laminar and turbulent-like aortic blood flow conditions.

BACKGROUND: Physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) are increasingly being used to model cardiovascular blood flow. The accuracy of PINNs is dependent on flow complexity and could deteriorate in the presence of highly-dynamical blood flow conditions, but the extent of this relationship is currently unknown. Therefore, we investigated the accuracy and performance of PINNs under a range of blood flow conditions, from laminar to turbulent-like flows. METHODS: A stenosis was virtually induced in the thoracic segment of a patient's aorta to represent aortic coarctation. Stenosis severity was vari

Complexity of Fracturing in Terms of Non-Extensive Statistical Physics: From Earthquake Faults to Arctic Sea Ice Fracturing.

Fracturing processes within solid Earth materials are inherently a complex phenomenon so that the underlying physics that control fracture initiation and evolution still remain elusive. However, universal scaling relations seem to apply to the collective properties of fracturing phenomena. In this article we present a statistical physics approach to fracturing based on the framework of non-extensive statistical physics (NESP). Fracturing phenomena typically present intermittency, multifractality, long-range correlations and extreme fluctuations, properties that motivate the NESP approach. Init

Anniversary paper: History and status of CAD and quantitative image analysis: the role of Medical Physics and AAPM.

The roles of physicists in medical imaging have expanded over the years, from the study of imaging systems (sources and detectors) and dose to the assessment of image quality and perception, the development of image processing techniques, and the development of image analysis methods to assist in detection and diagnosis. The latter is a natural extension of medical physicists' goals in developing imaging techniques to help physicians acquire diagnostic information and improve clinical decisions. Studies indicate that radiologists do not detect all abnormalities on images that are visible on re

Harsh physical punishment in childhood and adult physical health.

BACKGROUND: The use of physical punishment is controversial. No studies have comprehensively examined the relationship between physical punishment and several physical health conditions in a nationally representative sample. The current study investigated possible associations between harsh physical punishment (ie, pushing, grabbing, shoving, slapping, and hitting) in the absence of more severe child maltreatment (ie, physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, physical neglect, emotional neglect, and exposure to intimate partner violence) and several physical health conditions. METHODS: D

Estimation of shear wave 3D velocity fields from echocardiographic time-of-flight data using physics-informed neural networks.

Ultrasound shear wave elastography offers a promising non-invasive method to measure cardiac stiffness, providing valuable insights into an individual's heart condition. The technique uses high-frame-rate imaging to capture shear wave propagation along the cardiac wall, originating from mechanical events such as valve closure. The speed of these waves correlates with myocardial stiffness, enabling quantitative evaluation of cardiac tissue properties. While current implementations primarily rely on two-dimensional imaging, three-dimensional imaging has also been explored. In this case, shear wa

UAV-Induced Measurement Bias in Air Pollution Sensing: A Physics-Informed Framework for Characterization, Sensor Placement, and Correction.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) offer flexible, three-dimensional access for air pollution monitoring, but rotor-induced aerodynamic disturbance can bias onboard sensor readings, an effect not yet well characterized for multi-rotor platforms. This paper presents a physics-informed framework unifying rotor wake characterization, turbulence zone classification, pollutant sensitivity analysis, sensor placement strategy, and bias correction into one design tool. Grounded in actuator disk momentum theory and literature-constrained relationships, it predicts or bounds measurement bias across nine po

Characterization of Turbulent Kinetic Energy and Shear Layers in Sudden Expansion Flows: A Physics-Informed Machine Learning Approach.

PURPOSE: Traditional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methods used in the hydrodynamic design of blood-contacting medical devices create a bottleneck in optimization processes due to their heavy dependence on mesh structure and high computational costs. METHODS: In this study, using a mesh-free Physics-Informed Neural Network (PINN) approach, complex flow fields and Turbulent Kinetic Energy (TKE) distributions in FDA reference nozzle geometries were mapped with high resolution. Unlike artificial intelligence algorithms that merely fit data, the proposed model directly integrates the axisymm

Temperature-Modulated MEMS Gas Sensor Array Enabled by Physics-Informed Deep Learning for Thermal-Runaway Characteristic Gas Discrimination.

Gas monitoring is a promising method for early warning of thermal runaway, yet existing sensor systems suffer from insufficient miniaturization, inadequate discrimination ability, and severe drift-induced performance degradation. This work presents a 2 × 2 integrated single-chip MEMS gas sensor array with temperature modulation and deep learning for discriminating thermal-runaway characteristic gases. The array comprises four distinct temperature zones achieved by varying the line width of the heating electrodes, with the entire array measuring 1.8 × 1.8 × 0.5 mm3. Furthermore, it is capable o
