Perioperative, postoperative, and prophylactic use of antibiotics in alloplastic total temporomandibular joint replacement surgery: a survey and preliminary guidelines.

PURPOSE: In 2009, the American Academy Of Orthopedic Surgeons recommended lifelong prophylaxis after orthopedic total joint replacement (TJR) before these patients undergo dental, aerodigestive, genitourinary (GU), and gastrointestinal (GI) procedures. Because oral and maxillofacial surgeons worldwide are implanting alloplastic total temporomandibular joint replacements (TMJ TJRs), it appeared reasonable to survey these surgeons to obtain data that might shed some light, not only on this issue, but also to obtain some data to begin to develop preliminary guidelines for the peri- and postoperat

Traumatic Dental Injuries Among Young Orthodontic Patients in Public Dental Health Service: Patterns of Occurrence and Referral Routines.

OBJECTIVES: Orthodontic treatment is performed between 6 and 20 years-a period in life carrying the highest risk for traumatic dental injuries. The presence of traumatic injuries leads to treatment modifications and may adversely impact orthodontic outcomes. Yet, the literature on the prevalence and characteristics of traumatic injuries among patients undergoing orthodontic treatment is sparse. This study aims to describe the burden and distributional patterns of traumatic injuries, and the quality of information provided by general dentists to specialists on them (i.e., referral practices) am

Making a case for dental clinical practice guidelines for elective antibiotic use: an institutional retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Antibiotic overuse disrupts host-microbiome equilibrium, and increases risks of diarrhea, drug allergies, and multi-drug resistance. Dentists are the third largest prescribers of oral antibiotics in the US. Investigating antibiotic prescribing patterns alongside dental procedures may identify opportunities to reduce antibiotic overuse. METHOD: Institutional antibiotic prescriptions (Abx-Rx) dispensed with dental procedures were retrospectively reviewed from 2017-2022. Augmentin® (USAntibiotics, TN) and clindamycin prescriptions were investigated for nonindicated vs. well-reasoned

Assessment of Self-Medication Behaviour in Response to Dental Pain in Two Populations, France.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Self-medication appears to be a common practice for dental pain. However, in France, its prevalence and patterns in dentistry have never been studied. The primary objective was to assess the prevalence and self-medication behaviours in two at-risk populations: patients consulting for acute pulpal or periapical pain and patients with dental anxiety requiring treatment under general anaesthesia. The secondary objective was to examine the influence of socio-behavioural factors on these practices. METHOD: Between April 2021 and May 2023, the behaviours of two at-risk popula

SELF-DIRECTED LEARNING, TEAMWORK, HOLISTIC VIEW AND ORAL HEALTH.

The dental program at the Malmö Dental School, the so called Malmö-model, is guided by four linked principles: self-directed learning, teamwork, a holistic view of patient care, and oral health (Fig.1). Self-assessment ability is a critical competence for healthcare professionals, necessary for the successful adaptation to the modern life-long learning environment. Educational research seems to point out two critical factors for the development of such skills, continuous practice of self-assessment and constructive feedback. The first study presented in this thesis assessed students' self-asse

Enhancing diagnostic quality in dental bitewings using transformer and GAN-Based image restoration.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Bitewing radiographs have high diagnostic value in detecting interproximal caries and assessing alveolar bone levels. However, image compression and sensor limitations may compromise image quality and diagnostic value. This study investigates whether two advanced deep-learning methods-a Real-Enhanced Super-Resolution Generative Adversarial Network (Real-ESRGAN) and a Swin Transformer-based image restoration network (SwinIR)-can effectively reconstruct clinically practical details from degraded bitewing images. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A curated dataset of 4,004 high-qual

Automatic Dental Plaque Segmentation Based on Local-to-Global Features Fused Self-Attention Network.

The accurate detection of dental plaque at an early stage will definitely prevent periodontal diseases and dental caries. However, it remains difficult for the current dental examination to accurately recognize dental plaque without using medical dyeing reagent due to the low contrast between dental plaque and healthy teeth. To combat this problem, this paper proposes a novel network enhanced by a self-attention module for intelligent dental plaque segmentation. The key motivation is to directly utilize oral endoscope images (bypassing the need for dyeing reagent) and get accurate pixel-level

Adult Dental Health Survey 2009: implications of findings for clinical practice and oral health policy.

This is the final paper in a series reporting on the results of the 2009 Adult Dental Health Survey. Since 1968 national adult surveys have been repeated every decade with broadly similar methods providing a unique overview of trends in oral health over a 40-year period. This paper aims to explore the implications for dentists and oral health policy of the key results from the Adult Dental Health Survey 2009. Although repeat, cross-sectional, epidemiological surveys provide very valuable data on trends in disease patterns, they do not provide answers to test causal relationships and therefore
