Organization of sensory cortex in a Madagascan insectivore, the tenrec (Echinops telfairi).

We identified subdivisions of somatosensory cortex, and the borders and extents of auditory and visual cortex in Madagascan tenrecs (Echinops telfairi) by using microelectrode recording techniques and cortical myeloarchitecture. There was evidence for three distinct somatosensory fields. The primary somatosensory area (S1) contained an orderly representation of the contralateral body surface that stained darkly for myelin. Neurons were activated by light touch, and receptive fields were often small, especially for the snout. Immediately rostral to S1, a lightly myelinated rostral field (R) als

Retinal Structures and Visual Cortex Activity are Impaired Prior to Clinical Vision Loss in Glaucoma.

Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide and its pathogenesis remains unclear. In this study, we measured the structure, metabolism and function of the visual system by optical coherence tomography and multi-modal magnetic resonance imaging in healthy subjects and glaucoma patients with different degrees of vision loss. We found that inner retinal layer thinning, optic nerve cupping and reduced visual cortex activity occurred before patients showed visual field impairment. The primary visual cortex also exhibited more severe functional deficits than higher-order visual brain

Asymmetrical interhemispheric connections develop in cat visual cortex after early unilateral convergent strabismus: anatomy, physiology, and mechanisms.

In the mammalian primary visual cortex, the corpus callosum contributes to the unification of the visual hemifields that project to the two hemispheres. Its development depends on visual experience. When this is abnormal, callosal connections must undergo dramatic anatomical and physiological changes. However, data concerning these changes are sparse and incomplete. Thus, little is known about the impact of abnormal postnatal visual experience on the development of callosal connections and their role in unifying representation of the two hemifields. Here, the effects of early unilateral conver

Visual function and brain organization in non-decussating retinal-fugal fibre syndrome.

Functional neuroimaging, psychophysical and electrophysiological investigations were performed in a patient with non-decussating retinal-fugal fibre syndrome, an inborn achiasmatic state in which the retinal projections of each eye map entirely to the ipsilateral primary visual cortex. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies showed that for monocularly presented simple visual stimuli, only the ipsilateral striate cortex was activated. Within each hemisphere's striate cortex, the representation of the two hemifields overlapped extensively. Despite this gross miswiring, visual funct

[Postoperative normalization of prolonged P100m latency in the visual evoked magnetic field in a patient with occipital meningioma].

A 49-year-old female with a left occipital parasagittal meningioma was found to have prolonged P100m latency of the pattern reversal visual evoked magnetic field only in the hemisphere containing the lesion. After total removal of the tumor, the P100m latency was normalized in the affected hemisphere. Based on current dipole models, all the P100m dipoles were localized at the lateral bottom of the calcarine fissures bilaterally, as indicated by our previous study with normal subjects. Since the tumor was located near the parietoocipital sulcus and distant from the primary visual cortex, distur

The human imagination: the cognitive neuroscience of visual mental imagery.

Mental imagery can be advantageous, unnecessary and even clinically disruptive. With methodological constraints now overcome, research has shown that visual imagery involves a network of brain areas from the frontal cortex to sensory areas, overlapping with the default mode network, and can function much like a weak version of afferent perception. Imagery vividness and strength range from completely absent (aphantasia) to photo-like (hyperphantasia). Both the anatomy and function of the primary visual cortex are related to visual imagery. The use of imagery as a tool has been linked to many co

Neural correlates of the LSD experience revealed by multimodal neuroimaging.

Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) is the prototypical psychedelic drug, but its effects on the human brain have never been studied before with modern neuroimaging. Here, three complementary neuroimaging techniques: arterial spin labeling (ASL), blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) measures, and magnetoencephalography (MEG), implemented during resting state conditions, revealed marked changes in brain activity after LSD that correlated strongly with its characteristic psychological effects. Increased visual cortex cerebral blood flow (CBF), decreased visual cortex alpha power, and a greatly expan

Valproic acid modulates brain plasticity through epigenetic chromatin remodeling in the blind rat: implications for human sight recovery.

Blindness is a pervasive sensory condition that imposes diverse difficulties to carry on with activities of daily living. In blind individuals, the brain is subjected to a large scale reorganization characterized by expanded cortical territories associated with somatosensory and auditory functions and the recruitment of the former visual areas to perform bimodal somatosensory and auditory integration. This poses obstacles to efforts aimed at reassigning visual functions to the recruited visual cortex in the blind, especially after the end of the ontogentic sensitive period. Devising pharmacolo

[The relationship between visual agnosia and visual pathway for perception].

We report a patient with a unique visual agnosia, who was thought to have lost visual functions except for the primary visual function. The patient was a 71-year-old woman with progressive memory loss and cerebro-cortical atrophy in MRI; her clinical diagnosis was senile dementia of Alzheimer's type. A battery of tests to detect higher visual dysfunctions was performed. First of all, we presented small dots and lines in front of the patient; the patient was able to recognize them. When a triangle, a tetragon, a cube, pieces of paper of different colors and lines of different length were presen

Cerebral processes related to visuomotor imagery and generation of simple finger movements studied with positron emission tomography.

Positron emission tomography was used to compare the functional anatomy of visual imagination and generation of movement. Subjects were asked to generate visual images of their finger movement in response to a preparatory signal. Four conditions were tested: in two, no actual movement was required; in the other two, a second signal prompted the subjects to execute the imagined movement. Which movement to imagine was either specified by the preparatory stimulus or freely selected by the subjects. Compared with a rest condition, tasks involving only imagination activated several cortical regions

Neurofibrillary tangle deposition in primary idiotypic isocortices using flortaucipir PET in histopathologically confirmed Alzheimer's disease.

Tau deposition in Alzheimer's disease (AD) spreads throughout the brain in a stereotypical pattern captured by the Braak neurofibrillary tangle staging scheme. While involvement of primary isocortex defines the highest stage, it is unclear whether flortaucipir PET uptake differs among primary isocortical regions. We determined relationships between flortaucipir uptake in primary visual, auditory, motor, and somatosensory isocortices and Braak stage in 155 autopsy-confirmed participants with AD. Flortaucipir uptake was observed starting at Braak stage V, with visual and auditory isocortices sho

Parietal neglect and visual awareness.

The last decade has seen a resurgence of interest in the neural correlates of conscious vision, with most discussion focused on the 'blindsight' that can follow damage to primary visual cortex, in the occipital lobe. We suggest that new insights into the neural basis of visual awareness may be gleaned from a different neuropsychological phenomenon, namely visual 'neglect' after injury to regions in the parietal lobe. Neglect provides several revealing contrasts with occipital blindsight. Here we summarise four key findings. First, unlike the deficits caused by damage to primary visual cortex,

Prophylactic treatment in menstrual migraine: A proof-of-concept study.

The present study aimed to investigate the efficacy of repetitive cathodal direct current stimulation (rctDCS) over the visual cortex as a prophylactic treatment in patients with menstrual migraine. 20 female patients were recruited in this double-blind, placebo-controlled study and were assigned to receive either cathodal or sham stimulation. Over 3 menstrual cycles, tDCS with 2mA intensity and 20 min duration was applied to the visual cortex of the patients, in 5 consecutive sessions 1-5 days prior to the first day of their menstruation. The primary endpoint of the study was the frequency of

Slow to warm up: the role of habituation in social fear.

Neural habituation allows familiar information to be ignored in favor of salient or novel stimuli. In contrast, failure to rapidly habituate likely reflects deficits in the ability to learn that an environment is predictable, familiar and safe. Differences in habituation rate may underlie individual differences in the tendency to approach or avoid novelty; however, many questions remain unanswered. Given the importance of adaptive social functioning, here we tested whether habituation differences to social stimuli are associated with differences in social fearfulness, a trait that ranges from

A comparison of visual and auditory motion processing in human cerebral cortex.

Visual and auditory motion information can be used together to provide complementary information about the movement of objects. To investigate the neural substrates of such cross-modal integration, functional magnetic resonance imaging was used to assess brain activation while subjects performed separate visual and auditory motion discrimination tasks. Areas of unimodal activation included the primary and/or early sensory cortex for each modality plus additional sites extending toward parietal cortex. Areas conjointly activated by both tasks included lateral parietal cortex, lateral frontal co

Organization of spatial frequency in cat striate cortex.

Primary visual cortex, the first cortical stage of visual information processing, is represented by diverse functional maps that demonstrate the selectivity for specific visual features such as spatial frequency (SF). Although the local organization of SF maps in cat area 17 (A17) has been largely investigated, the global arrangement remains elusive. To address this unclear aspect, we evaluated the organization of SF maps within A17 by intrinsic signal optical imaging and extracellular electrophysiological recording. Our results explicitly showed that SF organization in cat A17 displayed a glo

Homeostatic plasticity and synaptic scaling in the adult mouse auditory cortex.

It has been demonstrated that sensory deprivation results in homeostatic adjustments recovering neuronal activity of the deprived cortex. For example, deprived vision multiplicatively scales up mEPSC amplitudes in the primary visual cortex, commonly referred to as synaptic scaling. However, whether synaptic scaling also occurs in auditory cortex after auditory deprivation remains elusive. Using periodic intrinsic optical imaging in adult mice, we show that conductive hearing loss (CHL), initially led to a reduction of primary auditory cortex (A1) responsiveness to sounds. However, this was fol

Photophobia in migraine: an interictal PET study of cortical hyperexcitability and its modulation by pain.

OBJECTIVE: Photophobia is an abnormal sensitivity to light experienced by migraineurs and is perhaps caused by cortical hyperexcitability. In clinical studies, an inter-relation between light perception and trigeminal nociception has been demonstrated in migraineurs but not in controls. The purpose of the study was to verify this interaction by functional imaging. METHODS: The authors used H(2)O(15) positron emitting tomography (PET) to study the cortical responses of seven migraineurs between attacks and the responses of seven matched control subjects to luminous stimulations at three lumina

Motor versus Psychomotor? Deciphering the Neural Source of Psychomotor Retardation in Depression.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is characterized by psychomotor retardation whose underlying neural source remains unclear. Psychomotor retardation may either be related to a motor source like the motor cortex or, alternatively, to a psychomotor source with neural changes outside motor regions, like input regions such as visual cortex. These two alternative hypotheses in main (n = 41) and replication (n = 18) MDD samples using 7 Tesla MRI are investigated. Analyzing both global and local connectivity in primary motor cortex (BA4), motor network and middle temporal visual cortex complex (MT+),

[Neurophysiology of visual aura in migraine].

Visual processing in migraine has been targeted because the visual symptoms that are commonly associated with attack, either in the form of aura or other more subtle symptoms, indicate that the visual pathways are involved in migrainous pathophysiology. The visual aura of the migraine attack has been explained by the cortical spreading depression (CSD) of Leão, neuroelectric event beginning in the occipital cortex and propagating into contiguous brain region. Clinical observations suggest that hyperexcitability occurs not only during the attack, typically in the form of photophobia, but also b
