High-throughput label-free microcontact printing graphene-based biosensor for valley fever.

The highly prevalent and virulent disease in the Western Hemisphere Coccidioidomycosis, also known as Valley Fever, can cause serious illness such as severe pneumonia with respiratory failure. It can also take on a disseminated form where the infection spreads throughout the body. Thus, a serious impetus exists to develop effective detection of the disease that can also operate in a rapid and high-throughput fashion. Here, we report the assembly of a highly sensitive biosensor using reduced graphene oxide (rGO) with Coccidioides(cocci) antibodies as the target analytes. The facile design made

Impact of 3D printing technology on the comprehension of surgical liver anatomy.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Surgical planning in liver resection depends on the precise understanding of the three-dimensional (3D) relation of tumors to the intrahepatic vascular trees. This study aimed to investigate the impact of 3D printing (3DP) technology on the understanding of surgical liver anatomy. METHODS: We selected four hepatic tumors that were previously resected. For each tumor, a virtual 3D reconstruction (VIR) model was created from multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT) and was prototyped using a 3D printer. Forty-five surgical residents were evenly assigned to each group (3DP,

Craniofacial Reconstruction by a Cost-Efficient Template-Based Process Using 3D Printing.

Craniofacial defects often result in aesthetic and functional deficits, which affect the patient's psyche and wellbeing. Patient-specific implants remain the optimal solution, but their use is limited or impractical due to their high costs. This article describes a fast and cost-efficient workflow of in-house manufactured patient-specific implants for craniofacial reconstruction and cranioplasty. As a proof of concept, we present a case of reconstruction of a craniofacial defect with involvement of the supraorbital rim. The following hybrid manufacturing process combines additive manufacturing

Surgical planning for a complex double-outlet right ventricle using 3D printing.

Rapid prototyping may be beneficial in properly selected cases of complex congenital heart disease, providing detailed anatomical understanding that helps to guide potential surgical and cardiac catheterization interventions. We present a case of double-outlet right ventricle, where the decision to obtain a three-dimensional printed model helped for better understanding of the anatomy, with the additional advantage of surgical simulation in planning the surgical approach and type of surgical repair.

3D printing lunate prosthesis for stage IIIc Kienböck's disease: a case report.

Stage IIIc Kienböck's disease is a clinical challenge to treat collapse of the lunate bone. A new reconstructive surgery was described in one patient using 3D printing lunate prosthesis. The prosthesis shape was designed by tomographic image processing and segmentation using technology compared with the intact side matched by mirror symmetry and 3D post-processing technologies. The patient recovered nearly full range of motion of the wrist after 12 months. The visual analog scale scores and Cooney scores were 2 points and 91 points. We demonstrated that an anatomical reconstruction to Kienböck

Three-dimensional printing of large nasal septal perforations for optimal prosthetic closure.

BACKGROUND: Since 1972, patients with large nasal perforations, who were symptomatic, and who were not candidates for surgery, had the option of custom prosthetic closure at Mayo Clinic. Although septal prostheses have helped many patients, 27% of pre-1982 patients chose not to keep the prosthesis in place. Two-dimensional computed tomography (CT) sizing resulted in more of the patients choosing to retain the prosthesis. The introduction of three-dimensional (3-D) printing to the sizing process offered the potential of further improved retention by refinement in prosthesis fit. OBJECTIVE: To

The use of three-dimensional printing to produce in vitro slice chambers.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, 3D printing technology has become inexpensive and simple enough that any lab can own and use one of these printers. NEW METHOD: We explored the potential use of 3D printers for quickly and easily producing in vitro slice chambers for patch clamp electrophysiology. Slice chambers were produced using five available plastics: ABS, PLA, Nylon 618, Nylon 680, and T-glase. These "lab-made" chambers were also made using stereolithography through a professional printing service (Shapeways). This study measured intrinsic membrane properties of neurons in the brain stem ped

[Cholangiocarcinoma developing in printing company workers: a new type of occupational cancer].

The incidence of cholangiocarcinoma among the past or present workers in the department of offset color proof-printing at a printing company in Osaka was extremely high. The workers were relatively young and were exposed to several chemicals including organic solvents such as dichloromethane and 1,2-dichloropropane. Although the exact cause of cholangiocarcinoma in the patients remain unknown, it is likely that the development of cholangiocarcinoma was triggered during exposure to these chemicals. Some chemicals can act as environmental factors that lead to the development of cholangiocarcinom

Ipsilateral printing in children's mirror-writing: a cause of specific learning disabilities?

Previous research has demonstrated that young children produce mirror-image letter-reversals when printing their names in a leftward direction from the midline or right margin of their writing paper. This ability is postulated to be an epiphenomenon of a symmetric, proximal (arm) stage of motor development that ontogenetically precedes lateralization of fine-motor distal (finger) control-a stage in which each arm can be controlled by either side of the brain. From this view, canonical writing in right hemi-space is contralaterally mediated by the left hemisphere and mirror-writing in left hemi
