Manifold Learning by Preserving Distance Orders.

Nonlinear dimensionality reduction is essential for the analysis and the interpretation of high dimensional data sets. In this manuscript, we propose a distance order preserving manifold learning algorithm that extends the basic mean-squared error cost function used mainly in multidimensional scaling (MDS)-based methods. We develop a constrained optimization problem by assuming explicit constraints on the order of distances in the low-dimensional space. In this optimization problem, as a generalization of MDS, instead of forcing a linear relationship between the distances in the high-dimension

Gambling behaviour in adolescents with learning disorders.

The present study examined the prevalence of disordered gambling behaviours in a community-based sample of adolescents (N = 532) living in eastern central Ontario. Of particular interest was examining the hypothesis that adolescents with learning disorders are at elevated risk for disordered gambling. Rates of disordered gambling in male adolescents with learning disorders were found to be significantly higher than adolescents without learning problems, even after controlling for negative affectivity and ADHD symptomatology. The implications for treatment and intervention of gambling problems

Innovative curriculum: Integrating the bio-behavioral and social science principles across the LifeStages in basic science years.

Behavioral and social science integration in clinical practice improves health outcomes across the life stages. The medical school curriculum requires an integration of the behavioral and social science principles in early medical education. We developed and delivered a four-week course entitled "LifeStages" to the first year medical students. The learning objectives of the bio-behavioral and social science principles along with the cultural, economic, political, and ethical parameters were integrated across the lifespan in the curriculum matrix. We focused on the following major domains: Grow

Active and observational reward learning in adults with autism spectrum disorder: relationship with empathy in an atypical sample.

INTRODUCTION: Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are characterised by disturbances in social behaviour. A prevailing hypothesis suggests that these problems are related to deficits in assigning rewarding value to social stimuli. The present study aimed to examine monetary reward processing in adults with ASDs by means of event-related potentials (ERPs). METHODS: Ten individuals with mild ASDs (Asperger's syndrome and high-functioning autism) and 12 healthy control subjects performed an active and an observational probabilistic reward-learning task. RESULTS: Both groups showed similar overall l

Snapshots of simulation: creative strategies used by Australian educators to enhance simulation learning experiences for nursing students.

Simulation in nursing is a flourishing area for nurse educators' practice. Defined as learning that amplifies, mimics or replaces real-life clinical situations, simulation aims to give students opportunity to reason through a clinical problem and make decisions, without the potential for harming actual patients. Educators in nursing are contributing to simulation learning in diverse and creative ways. Yet much of their craft is not being widely disseminated because educators are not always confident in publishing their work. This paper aims to stimulate creative development in simulation by pr

Developing standardized patient clinical simulations to apply concepts of interdisciplinary collaboration.

Interdisciplinary collaboration and interprofessional education (IPE) are essential for transforming health care. Students in nurse practitioner (NP) programs have limited exposure to IPE. Simulated clinical experiences, based on social learning theory, provide a safe and realistic environment to expose NP students to interdisciplinary collaboration as a step toward developing IPE. Faculty at a large university school of nursing developed a formative standardized patient experience to provide NP students with two opportunities to synthesize a patient assessment, to share patient problem-solvin

Improving Performance of Devanagari Script Input-Based P300 Speller Using Deep Learning.

The performance of an existing Devanagari script (DS) input-based P300 speller with conventional machine learning techniques suffers from low information transfer rate (ITR). This occurs due to its required large size of display, i.e., 8 × 8 row-column (RC) paradigm which exhibits issues like crowding effect, adjacency, fatigue, task difficulty, and required large number of trials for character recognition. For P300 detection, deep learning algorithms have shown the state of art performance compared to the conventional machine learning algorithms in the recent past. Therefore, authors have bee

Experiential Avoidance Predicts Persistence of Major Depressive Disorder and Generalized Anxiety Disorder in Late Adolescence.

OBJECTIVE: Experiential avoidance (EA) is a transdiagnostic construct that may underlie the high comorbidity between major depressive disorder (MDD) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). This analysis used data from a longitudinal study (conducted September 2010-April 2016) to examine whether adolescent EA varies by MDD and GAD symptomatology trajectory and predicts said trajectories. Longitudinal associations between EA, anxiety, and depression symptoms were also examined. METHODS: Adolescents aged 15 to 20 years (N = 183) were followed for 2 years using a comprehensive assessment battery.

Anterograde versus Retrograde Effects of Damage to Identified Learning and Memory Systems during Acquisition, Retention, and Re-Acquisition of an Instrumental Visual Discrimination Task: Dorsal Striatum, Perirhinal Cortex, and Hippocampus.

BACKGROUND: The goal of these experiments was to determine which learning and memory system(s) were necessary for the retention of visual discriminations and subsequent acquisition of a second problem. The dorsal striatum should be involved in the acquisition and expression of this task based on previous work implicating this region in instrumental learning and memory processes. The perirhinal cortex has been implicated in learning and memory processes associated with visual information like objects, and pictures and may also play a role in the acquisition and/or retention of visual discrimina

Worst Case Learning for H ∞ Consensus for Heterogeneous Multiagent Systems: A Resource-Constrained Game Approach.

This article investigates heterogeneous high-order nonlinear multiagent systems (MASs) under an event-triggered mechanism (ETM). A reinforcement learning (RL)-based zero-sum game (ZSG) approach is employed to solve the robust consensus problem. To handle heterogeneity, unified-dimension state variables are constructed, auxiliary variables are defined, and consensus errors are reformulated accordingly. By applying the min-max principle, the optimal $H_{\infty } $ consensus problem is transformed into a ZSG problem, and an approximately optimal consensus protocol is derived by solving the Hamilt

Research on reliability mapping of 5G low orbit constellation network slice based on deep reinforcement learning.

Reliability mapping of 5G low orbit constellation network slice is an important means to ensure link network communication. The problem of state space explosion is a typical problem. The deep reinforcement learning method is introduced. Under the 5G low orbit constellation integrated network architecture based on software definition network (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV), the resource requirements and resource constraints of the virtual network function (VNF) are comprehensively considered to build the 5G low orbit constellation network slice reliability mapping model, and the

Learning disabilities, dyslexia, and vision.

Learning disabilities constitute a diverse group of disorders in which children who generally possess at least average intelligence have problems processing information or generating output. Their etiologies are multifactorial and reflect genetic influences and dysfunction of brain systems. Reading disability, or dyslexia, is the most common learning disability. It is a receptive language-based learning disability that is characterized by difficulties with decoding, fluent word recognition, rapid automatic naming, and/or reading-comprehension skills. These difficulties typically result from a

A Bayesian Network Meta-Analysis to Synthesize the Influence of Contexts of Scaffolding Use on Cognitive Outcomes in STEM Education.

Computer-based scaffolding provides temporary support that enables students to participate in and become more proficient at complex skills like problem solving, argumentation, and evaluation. While meta-analyses have addressed between-subject differences on cognitive outcomes resulting from scaffolding, none has addressed within-subject gains. This leaves much quantitative scaffolding literature not covered by existing meta-analyses. To address this gap, this study used Bayesian network meta-analysis to synthesize within-subjects (pre-post) differences resulting from scaffolding in 56 studies.
