Aetiology of stillbirths and neonatal deaths in rural Ghana: implications for health programming in developing countries.

In developing countries many stillbirths and neonatal deaths occur at home and cause of death is not recorded by national health information systems. A community-level verbal autopsy tool was used to obtain data on the aetiology of stillbirths and neonatal deaths in rural Ghana. Objectives were to describe the timing and distribution of causes of stillbirths and neonatal deaths according to site of death (health facility or home). Data were collected from 1 January 2003 to 30 June 2004; 20,317 deliveries, 696 stillbirths and 623 neonatal deaths occurred over that time. Most deaths occurred in

Formative research for developing targeted skin cancer prevention programs for children in multiethnic Hawaii.

Skin cancer is a significant and increasing public health problem. Improvement in sun protection practices among children holds great promise for prevention, and parents and caregivers play important roles. Health promotion programs are most likely to succeed when based on a systematic planning process including an understanding of current practices, beliefs, social norms and environments. This article describes formative research used to help develop the SunSmart skin cancer prevention program in Hawaii. Group discussions and interviews were conducted with 216 children in grades 1, 2 and 3, 1

Improving the fit: adolescents' needs and future programs for sexual and reproductive health in developing countries.

Demand is growing in developing countries for sexual and reproductive health programs for young people. However, little scientifically based evidence exists about which program approaches are most effective in shaping healthy behaviors. Careful evaluation and research must be increased, but meanwhile, planners need guidance as they expand programming. Research indicates that current programs often do not match the needs and health-seeking behaviors of young people. Behavioral theories and expert opinion agree that adolescents must be taught generic and health-specific skills necessary for adop

Spinal cord regeneration deploys adult molecular programs that do not recapitulate embryonic development.

Adult zebrafish reverse paralysis after spinal cord injury. Their regenerative capacity is stem cell-dependent and often attributed to potent progenitors that retain embryonic radial glial features and reenact developmental programs after injury. To explore the extents to which regeneration recapitulates development, we integrated single-cell RNA-sequencing datasets spanning development, adult homeostasis and adult regeneration. We found immune cell maturation and neuronal differentiation extend into the juvenile stages, while only 25% of injury-responsive adult progenitors recapitulate larval

Developing and Implementing a Standardized Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory Orientation Program: Improving Staff Preparedness.

The cardiac catheterization laboratory (CCL) is a highly specialized procedural environment that requires an effective orientation process for nurses and radiology technologists. Leaders at a health care network identified the need for a standardized CCL orientation program when high turnover rates and staff shortages created a need to hire nurses and radiology technologists with no CCL work history. A group of CCL leaders and perioperative educators collaborated to create and implement a network-wide CCL orientation program. The program is an instructor-led course conducted over three eight-h

Sex Steroid Hormone Signaling Tunes Metabolic and Neuronal Programs in Human Cortical Development.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) exhibits a profound male biased sex ratio. While numerous genes have been implicated in ASD, the functional basis of this sex difference is unclear. One enticing hypothesis is genome-wide transcriptional regulation through estrogens and androgens. While hormone-mediated transcription is well-studied in reproductive tissues, its role in cortical development is poorly defined. Thus, we profiled androgen (AR) and estrogen (ESR1/ESR2) receptor expression in primary human cortex and developmental stage-matched organoid models by single-cell RNA-seq. AR was primarily e

Maternal dietary citrulline supplementation increases fetal growth and programs pancreatic development in the lambs.

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), caused by maternal undernutrition, impairs fetal growth and increases the risk for postnatal metabolic dysfunction. L-arginine can mitigate these effects; however, its use in sheep is limited by ruminal microbial degradation. Interestingly, L-citrulline, the precursor for arginine synthesis, bypasses ruminal catabolism and may be a practical alternative. This study evaluated if maternal L-citrulline supplementation to nutrient restricted ewes from gestational days (GD) 28 to 140 (term = 147) enhances fetal growth in lambs. Gestating ewes were fed 50% of

Developing a Basic Package of Oral Care Training Program for Primary Health Care Nurses.

INTRODUCTION: Nurses are key in the delivery of the basic package of oral care in the primary health care system. Whereas oral health care training is essential for apt oral care delivery, the scope and training approaches for the primary health care nurse are not well established. A mentorship approach has rarely been explored for oral health training. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop a basic package of oral health care training program for primary health care nurses in Kenya. It also evaluated and compared the effects of workshop and mentorship approaches on a basic package of oral ca

Dominant Malignant Clones Leverage Lineage Restricted Epigenomic Programs to Drive Ependymoma Development.

UNLABELLED: ZFTA-RELA is the most recurrent genetic alteration seen in pediatric supratentorial ependymoma (EPN) and is sufficient to initiate tumors in mice. Despite ZFTA-RELA's potent oncogenic potential, ZFTA-RELA gene fusions are observed exclusively in childhood EPN, with tumors located distinctly in the supratentorial region of the central nervous system (CNS). We hypothesized that specific chromatin modules accessible during brain development would render distinct cell lineage programs at direct risk of transformation by ZFTA-RELA. To this end, we performed combined single cell ATAC and
