PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The objectives of this article are to update the reader on the current definition and diagnostic assessment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and to describe its clinical characteristics, discuss its epidemiology and pathophysiologic aspects, as well as to summarize the current therapeutic options for PTSD.
RECENT FINDINGS: The new nomenclature of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) includes 20 PTSD symptoms clustered into four symptomatic domains: intrusive symptoms, active avoidance, disturbed emotional states, and altera

Rural left-behind adolescents in China experience elevated risks of loneliness, negative affect, weakened belonging, and limited access to acceptable psychosocial support. Conventional school counselling models often depend on self-referral, verbal disclosure, and identification with a help-seeking role, conditions that may not fit the social and cultural context of many rural students. This manuscript develops and preliminarily evaluates a culturally grounded schoolbased psychosocial support programme using locally rooted intangible cultural heritage (ICH) activities, including paper cutting,

BACKGROUND: Individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs) face a multitude of challenges in their lifetime including complex symptomatology, co-morbid health concerns, profound levels of stigmatization, and diminished access to quality care. Additionally, they are often the victims of unjust systemic biases and discrimination when they are able to engage with the healthcare system. This confluence of injustices leads to disparate physical and mental health outcomes for this vulnerable population. Globally, schizophrenia affects over 24 million, many of whom are experiencin

UNLABELLED: The mass traumatization of the population in Ukraine and numerous countries worldwide due to military actions, natural and artificial disasters, and violence creates challenges for the mental health care system, requiring evidence-based approaches to treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is recognized as a priority method of psychotherapeutic intervention for PTSD. However, the effectiveness of various CBT methods remains insufficiently studied regarding specific types of trauma and individual patient characteristics.

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive behaviour therapy with exposure and response prevention is efficient in treating patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Nevertheless, it would be helpful for many patients to complement the therapeutic treatment with acceptance strategies to further increase the therapeutic benefit. The aim of the present study was to examine neurobiological responses to acceptance and intensification strategies during symptom provocation alongside the psychotherapeutic process.
METHOD: A total of 23 patients diagnosed with OCD (subtype: washing/contamination fear) was inst

BACKGROUND: Depression is a serious disorder in childhood and adolescence. Affected children and adolescents show significant impairments in various aspects of life. Studies on the effectiveness or efficacy of psychotherapy in depressed children and adolescents are qualitatively very heterogeneous and reveal small effect sizes. There is thus a need to better tailor psychotherapy approaches to these age groups to improve outcomes like parent-child relationship, symptomatology, or quality of life. To address this gap, we designed a modular, individualized treatment program for children and adole

Background/Objectives: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders in childhood and it tends to remain during adulthood. It not only affects cognitive abilities and behavior but also often presents emotional disturbances and alterations in the perceived quality of life. These symptoms are primarily related to dysfunctions in the ventromedial and dorsolateral prefrontal network. The main objective was to evaluate the feasibility and explore the initial outcomes of an integrated protocol combining neuropsychological treatment and transcr

INTRODUCTION: Children of mentally ill parents have an increased risk of developing a mental illness. From an ethical and health-economic perspective, psychotherapeutic care for this risk group is necessary to counter the risk of transgenerational transmission of mental illness. The psychosocial situation of affected families is complex and requires customized support. Within the Children-of-Mentally-Ill-Parents-Network (CHIMPS-NET), three family-based, needs-tailored new forms of care (NFC) - based on the manualized CHIMPS intervention - are implemented and evaluated at 21 locations in German

Therapeutic alliance is a core predictor of psychotherapeutic outcome, in general, and suicide prevention, specifically. Although clinical literature suggests that maintaining positive alliance with high-suicide-risk patients can be particularly challenging, few studies evaluate this phenomenon, primarily due to alliance measurement difficulties. Our study derives proxy alliance metrics using natural language processing and models differences across classified suicide risk strata and suicide decedent status. We first identified all United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) psychotherap

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a prevalent condition that profoundly impairs quality of life across diverse populations. Despite widespread use, current antidepressant and psychotherapeutic treatments exhibit limited efficacy and unsatisfactory response rates. Progress in developing effective therapies is hampered by the insufficiently understood heterogeneity of MDD and its elusive underlying mechanisms. Here, to address these challenges, we develop a novel machine learning framework that identifies structure-function covariation through target-oriented fusion of structural and functional

OBJECTIVE: Relational dynamics, including countertransference responses and the therapeutic alliance, are crucial in the treatment of patients with personality disorders (PD). However, few studies on PD treatment focus on the dyadic process of therapy. The present study aims to investigate associations between therapist emotional response/countertransference (CT) and patients' experience of treatment alliance, and CT developments in therapies with treatment completion as outcome.
METHOD: A longitudinal, observational study of patients (N = 365) treated at PD treatment units within specialist

Within the modern resurgence of psychedelics as medicinal agents for a range of conditions, the story of MDMA (Ecstasy, Molly) has been re-narrated from a dangerous street drug to a breakthrough mental health therapy. Even still, the story of MDMA remains incomplete within a binary discourse of deviant recreational use versus psychotherapeutic-medical use. The present research aimed to uncover an emerging model of MDMA use grounded in the experiences of adult couples using MDMA privately and in the context of their committed relationships. Eight adult couples who self-reported active MDMA use

OBJECTIVES: Previous work has demonstrated that the tendency to make hostile attributions is not a stable trait but varies across different social situations. Therefore, we sought to investigate whether hostile attributions within clinical samples are better understood as a persistent characteristic or one that varies across contexts.
METHODS: The current analyses investigated patterns of attributions among people diagnosed with schizophrenia (SCZ, n = 271) or autism spectrum disorder (ASD, n = 100) and non-clinical control participants (NCC, n = 233) in an existing data set.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive behavioural therapy is an effective treatment for depression. However, one third of the patients do not respond satisfactorily, and relapse rates of around 30 % within the first post-treatment year were reported in a recent meta-analysis. In total, 30-50 % of remitted patients present with residual symptoms by the end of treatment. A common residual symptom is rumination, a process of recurrent negative thinking and dwelling on negative affect. Rumination has been demonstrated as a major factor in vulnerability to depression, predicting the onset, severity, and duration o

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of a unified cognitive-behavioral therapy protocol for group treatment of patients with a range of comorbid mood and anxiety disorders.
METHODS: In this open-trial study, the unified protocol was followed for the psychotherapeutic treatment of 16 patients with comorbid mood and anxiety disorders, confirmed by the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview. Beck Depression and Anxiety Inventories, the World Health Organization Quality of Life evaluation instrument, and the ARIZONA scale of sexual function were used to evaluate progress in patients th

BACKGROUND: Anorexia nervosa often requires inpatient treatment that includes psychotherapeutic intervention in addition to physical and nutritional management for severe low body weight. However, such patients sometimes terminate inpatient treatment prematurely because of resistance to treatment, poor motivation for treatment, unstable emotions, and problematic behaviors. In this study, the psychopathological factors related to the personality of anorexic patients that might predict discontinuation of inpatient treatment were investigated using the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory

BACKGROUND: Alexithymia, characterized by difficulties in identifying and expressing emotions, has been linked to diminished quality of life in older breast cancer patients, a vulnerable population facing multifaceted psychosocial challenges. While prior research has explored these associations, investigations have predominantly adopted a variable-centered approach, overlooking the potential statistical mediating role of meaning in life. Moreover, no studies have examined the heterogeneity of alexithymia and meaning in life through a person-centered lens, which may reveal distinct subgroups wi

The ability to accurately predict pain is an adaptive feature in healthy individuals. However, in chronic pain, this mechanism may be selectively impaired and can lead to increased anxiety and excessive avoidance behavior. Recently, we reported the first data demonstrating brain activation in fibromyalgia (FM) patients during conditioned pain responses, in which FM patients revealed a tendency to form new pain-related associations rather than extinguishing irrelevant ones. The aim of the present study was to extend our previous analysis, to elucidate potential neural divergences between subjec

Military veterans in later adulthood are at increased risk for chronic posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), often characterized by cumulative trauma exposure, high levels of psychiatric and medical comorbidity, and prolonged symptom persistence. Although several evidence-based psychotherapies for PTSD are available, their effectiveness and clinical characteristics when implemented with older, non-active military veterans remain insufficiently synthesized. This integrative review aimed to examine psychotherapeutic interventions for PTSD in this population, focusing on intervention types, clini

BACKGROUND: While psychotherapeutic interventions for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) are effective, transfer to everyday life is challenged by a shift from treatment setting to the patients' living environment. Adding digital components to the treatment (Blended Care, BC) may support autonomous completion of therapeutic tasks and facilitate transfer but has not been studied in residential treatment settings.
OBJECTIVE: The present study explores the implementation, usability, and preliminary effectiveness of a BC approach for PTSD treatment in a non-acute residential hospital setting.
