The natural history of chromoblastomycosis was studied in Madagascar by analysing the characteristics of 1323 confirmed cases observed since 1955, including 45 patients receiving a new antifungic drug (terbinafine) during a multicentric study organized in 1995. The surveys data, conserved by the histopathology laboratory in the Institut Pasteur of Madagascar during 40 years, permit this retrospective analysis. The description of two ecosystems, one in the North with Fonsecaea pedrosoi evolving in the tropical rainforest and one in the South with Cladophialophora carrionii (41% of the whole sam

Human monkeypox--Kasai Oriental, Zaire, 1996-1997.

Monkeypox is an orthopoxvirus with enzootic circulation in rainforests of central and western Africa; the virus can be transmitted to humans and cause a syndrome clinically similar to smallpox (e.g., pustular rash, fever, respiratory symptoms, and in some cases, death). From February through August 1996, a total of 71 clinical cases of monkeypox, including six deaths, occurred in 13 villages in Africa in the Katako-Kombe health zone (1996 combined population: 15,698), Sankuru subregion, Kasai Oriental, Zaire. During the initial investigation of this cluster of human cases, specimens of serum a

Similar Habitat Gradients Across Native and Invasive Ranges Elicit Divergent Evolutionary Responses.

Knowledge about an invasive species' biology within its native range illuminates the underlying evolutionary processes that occur following introduction. Cane toads (Rhinella marina) were introduced to coastal Queensland in 1935 and continue to expand their range across Australia. Despite low genetic diversity, they have accelerated their expansion across novel, arid environments as they travelled westward, differing from their eastern Australian conspecifics in morphology, physiology, and behaviour. The recent discovery of two ecotypes (from wetter 'rainforest' and drier 'coastal' areas) in t

Constructing a lower-bound estimate of the global number of insect species on a hyperdiverse empirical foundation.

Estimating the number of insect species on Earth is a daunting challenge. The current consensus estimate-about six million species-is likely far too low, as we will show. Our estimate of the global number of insect species rests on a sample of more than 1,600,000 DNA-barcoded insect specimens representing 53,945 species from 15 "core" Malaise traps deployed in dry forest, cloud forest, and rainforest ecosystems of the Área de Conservación Guanacaste (ACG) in Costa Rica. Even this massive sample fails to reveal the full extent of ACG insect species richness. To estimate total ACG insect richnes

Preliminary Insights into Geographic Variation in Venom Profiles and Functional Activities of Nigerian Snakes, Bitis arietans and Naja nigricollis.

Snakebite envenoming is a major yet neglected tropical disease in sub-Saharan Africa, where antivenom efficacy is critically limited by intraspecific venom variation shaped by local ecological pressures. Nigeria's sharply contrasting Sudan Savanna (North) and Lowland Rainforest (South) provide an ideal natural system to investigate this variation, yet a comparative analysis of its medically important snakes has been lacking. We conducted an integrated proteomic and functional characterization of venoms from the puff adder (Bitis arietans) and black-necked spitting cobra (Naja nigricollis) coll

Forest soundscapes improve mood, restoration and cognition, but not physiological stress or immunity, relative to industrial soundscapes.

Exposure to natural environments has consistently been shown to boost human health. However, population-level benefit is constrained by both inequitable access to high-quality natural spaces and the lack of medical prescriptions for nature-based therapy. Addressing these challenges requires an improved understanding of the mechanisms linking environmental attributes to positive health outcomes. A systematic, standardised experimental approach is needed to support this effort. This manuscript presents two complementary experiments-a randomised controlled trial (n = 100) and a counterbalanced cr

Haematological and serum biochemical reference interval for free-ranging northern bettongs (Bettongia tropica) in far north Queensland.

BACKGROUND: The northern bettong, Bettongia tropica, is an endangered potoroid recognised as a specialist consumer of underground ectomycorrhizal fungi important to wet sclerophyll forest at the interface with tropical rainforest. In line with identified recovery objectives of re-establishing populations within the species' former range, a founder population was translocated to a feral predator-free fenced exclosure within previously occupied habitat to the south of its current range. No published reference intervals for haematology and serum biochemistry exist for this species. Establishing r

Agricultural habitat use affects infant survivorship in an endangered macaque species.

Infant survival is a major determinant of individual fitness and constitutes a crucial factor in shaping species' ability to maintain viable populations in changing environments.1 Early adverse conditions, such as maternal loss, social isolation, and ecological hazards, have been associated with reduced rates of infant survivorship in wild primates.2,3,4 Agricultural landscapes increasingly replacing natural forest habitats may additionally threaten the survival of infants through exposure to novel predators,5 human-wildlife conflicts,6,7 or the use of harmful chemicals.8,9 Here, we investigat

High intestinal parasite infection detected in children from Región Autónoma Atlántico Norte (R.A.A.N.) of Nicaragua.

There is a lack of epidemiological information concerning intestinal parasitic infections, and especially in soil-transmitted helminths, occurring in some departments of Nicaragua. Up to now, this is the first study involving two nearby areas (Puerto Cabezas and Siuna municipalities) of the Región Autónoma Atlántico Norte (R.A.A.N.). One stool sample was analyzed by Kato-Katz, formaldehyde-ethyl acetate concentration method and modified Ziehl-Neelsen technique, and a simple questionnaire concerning demographic, sanitary and behavioral data was distributed among 735 children and evaluated. Bioprospecting of the Amazonian mapati fruit (Pourouma cecropiifolia Martius): Antiproliferative and antimalarial potential of peel and seed hydroethanolic extracts.

Mapati (Pourouma cecropiifolia Martius) is a tropical fruit endemic to the Amazon rainforest and a source of phenolic compounds, the antimalarial and antiproliferative properties of which remain untapped. Herein, we provide insights into the composition and biological potential of mapati extracts. Hydroethanolic extracts of mapati peel and seed were subjected to UPLC-QToF/MS and HPLC-DAD, which revealed a rich polyphenols profile, including chlorogenic acid and its isomers, quercetin, and glycosylated derivatives. These extracts, particularly the seed extract, exhibit high antioxidant capaciti

Bark presence shifts fungal guild composition with varying effects on fungal diversity and biomass in a tropical forest.

Bark influences wood decomposition, but the mechanisms are unclear. We investigated fungal community composition, microbial biomass, and wood physicochemical condition during a wood decomposition experiment. We carried out a 2-year common garden experiment in a tropical seasonal rainforest, China, with logs from five tree species, comparing intact-bark versus bark-removed treatments over 0, 18, and 24 months of field exposure. We sequenced wood-inhabiting fungi, measured microbial biomass, and assessed wood chemical properties over time. We anticipated bark presence would alter fungal communit

Detection and molecular characterisation of subtype B avian metapneumovirus in commercial chickens and co-infection with bacteria pathogens in Nigeria.

Avian metapneumovirus (aMPV) significantly impacts turkey and chicken production, though its prevalence in chickens is often underestimated due to a lack of systematic diagnostic surveys. This study aimed to detect and characterise aMPV and determine the prevalence of secondary bacterial pathogens present during aMPV infection in commercial chickens raised in three climatic zones in Nigeria. Tissue samples were collected from carcasses of 42 flocks with suspected aMPV cases accounting for 420 chickens. These samples were obtained from veterinary diagnostic facilities in three climatic zones of

Molecular detection of filarioid nematodes (Nematoda: Onchocercidae) in wild mammals from different Brazilian biomes.

Parasitic nematodes within Onchocercidae are a diverse group transmitted by hematophagous arthropods. This study investigated the molecular occurrence of filarioid nematodes in 93 wild mammals from the Amazon, Cerrado and Pantanal biomes in Brazil, based on the analysis of the mitochondrial genes 12S ribosomal DNA gene (12S rDNA) and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene (COI). Conventional polymerase chain reaction (cPCR) targeting the 12S rDNA gene yielded positive results in 14·44% (13/93) of the samples, including 9·86% of jaguars (7/71), 50% of pumas (1/2), 12·5% of giant anteaters (1/8), 5

Epidemiology of Yellow Fever in Nigeria: Analysis of Climatic, Ecological, Socio-Demographic, and Clinical Factors Associated with Viral Positivity Among Suspected Cases Using National Surveillance Data, 2017-2023.

BACKGROUND: Since its resurgence in 2017, Yellow fever (YF) outbreaks have continued to occur in Nigeria despite routine immunization and the implementation of several reactive mass vaccinations. Nigeria, Africa's most populous endemic country, is considered a high-priority country for implementing the End Yellow fever Epidemics strategy. METHODS: This retrospective analysis described the epidemiological profile, trends, and factors associated with Yellow fever viral positivity in Nigeria. We conducted a multivariable binary logistic regression analysis to identify factors associated with YF

Undiagnosed AIDS in a 13-year-old boy in rural Gabon.

INTRODUCTION: To date, 38.4 million people live with the Human Immunodeficiency virus (HIV) amongst whom 1.7 million are children below fourteen years of age. The highest burden of HIV is in sub-Saharan Africa. Children living with HIV acquired the infection mostly by mother-to-child transmission (MTCT), however the diagnosis is often delayed. In malaria-endemic countries, fever is one of the most frequent symptoms for seeking medical care and it is often primarily suspected as the onset of malaria or respiratory bacterial infections. Here, we report a case of late-onset undiagnosed AIDS in a 1

Clinical features of cutaneous and disseminated cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis in Paraty, Rio de Janeiro.

BACKGROUND: American tegumentary leishmaniasis (ATL) caused by Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis is endemic in Rio de Janeiro State (RJ), where the disease shows epidemiologic and clinical characteristics distinct from those of ATL in other Brazilian regions. Paraty is the second most important endemic area in RJ; however, reports on leishmaniasis in this region refer to the occurrence of the disease without describing its characteristics. METHODS: The clinical features of 71 cases of ATL reported between 1991 and 1997 in Paraty are presented. Thirty patients were re-evaluated 10 years later.

Description of Moniliella guaraniorum sp. nov., Moniliella tapajorum sp. nov. and Moniliella boundymillsiae sp. nov., three yeast species from tropical forest bioregions.

Three novel Moniliella species are proposed based on 16 yeast isolates collected from flowers, exudates and tree bark in tropical forest bioregions of Brazil and Australia. Barcode sequences of these yeasts showed that they represent distinct species of Moniliella. The first species, represented by two isolates, is phylogenetically related to Moniliella byzovii. The two species differ in the sequences of the D1/D2 domains of the large subunit of the rRNA gene by 34 nucleotide substitutions and 4 indels. The second species, represented by three isolates, is related to Moniliella carnis, from wh
