COVID-19 infection recurrence presenting with meningoencephalitis.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection can involve many organs, such as central nervous system, including in relapse. We describe the case of a 64-year-old woman with microbiologically confirmed COVID-19-induced respiratory distress whose treatment resulted in a negative nasopharyngeal swab reverse transcriptase PCR (RT-PCR) result for COVID-19. However, after a few weeks, relapse occurred, as indicated by symptoms of acute meningoencephalitis. Results of COVID-19 RT-PCR testing from her cerebrospinal fluid, nasopharyngeal and tracheal aspiration specimens became positive again, but COV

Recurrence of urethral leiomyoma: A case report.

Urethral leiomyoma is an infrequent benign tumor. Much more infrequent is recurrence. It has been described in exceptional cases. We report a rare case of a 46 year old woman who had a surgery for a urethral leiomyoma eight years ago. Now, she presents with nodulation in her vagina with no other symptoms. The patient underwent surgical excision of the tumor, and pathological examination revealed an recurrence of urethral leiomyoma.

Abdominal Aortic Rupture Secondary to Lymphoma Recurrence.

Neoplasias affecting the aorta are usually due to a variety of thoracic and abdominal tumors, which are more common than primary tumors of the aortic wall. Those tumors that can invade the abdominal aorta are usually sarcomas, which are able to mimic, both clinically and radiologically, an aortic disease such as an aneurysm or a dissection. There are few clinical scenarios where surgical resection and aortic repair needs to be performed, and indications have not still been clearly established in the literature. We describe the case of a patient with a periaortic lymphoma who presented an aorti

Attentional control, rumination and recurrence of depression.

BACKGROUND: Depressive recurrence is highly prevalent and adds significantly to the burden of depressive disorder. Whilst some clinical predictors of recurrence have been clearly demonstrated (e.g. residual symptoms, previous episodes), the cognitive and psychological processes that may contribute to recurrence risk are less well established. In this study we examine whether cognitive flexibility deficits and rumination are related to recurrence in a remitted clinical sample. METHOD: We compared remitted patients with 2 or more previous depressive episodes (N = 69) to a matched group of healt

Recurrence of Pemphigus Vulgaris Under Nivolumab Therapy.

For many types of cancer, immune checkpoint inhibitors have proven to be a highly effective treatment. The monoclonal anti-PD-1 antibody nivolumab stimulates the immune system and is one of the newest treatment options for non-small cell lung cancer. In doing so, immune checkpoint inhibitors can trigger many skin lesions that have not yet been completely investigated in their entirety. In this case report, pemphigus vulgaris is identified as a potential adverse event that occurs under the treatment with nivolumab. In addition to the standard methods, we examined our patient's samples with ex v

Prognostic Indicators of Recurrence of Bacterial Vaginosis.

Following all forms of therapy for bacterial vaginosis (BV), recurrence rates are extremely high. Many diagnostic tests are available that differentiate bacterial vaginosis from other types of vaginal disorders, but none predict recurrence after treatment, nor are any vetted for monitoring ongoing responses to treatment. Our goal was to determine which tests, and at what optimal times, have prognostic value in predicting recurrence. This prospective cohort study monitored 74 highly recurrent BV patients for up to 9 months. Symptomatic BV patients were treated with oral metronidazole and were e

Post-Transplant Disease Recurrence in Pediatric PSC.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Review the current knowledge about recurrent primary sclerosing cholangitis (rPSC) after transplant in children. RECENT FINDINGS: Recurrent PSC is a significant complication that afflicts 16% of children after liver transplantation for primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) at a median onset of 38 months post-transplant. Possible risk factors include younger age at PSC diagnosis or transplant, the presence of overlap syndrome or IBD, and post-transplant induction with thymoglobulin. rPSC impairs the patient's quality of life and can be detrimental to the graft. Preventive opt

Intraventricular recurrence of a craniopharyngioma: case report.

Craniopharyngiomas frequently recur locally or less commonly along the path of prior resection. Ectopic recurrence is rare, although cases are reported along the neuraxis spanning from the subgaleal space down to the S1 nerve root. This case reports on a girl with a history of craniopharyngioma first resected at 23 months of age with two local suprasellar recurrences managed with repeat craniotomy and external beam radiation therapy. At age 14 she complained of worsening headaches and brain MRI demonstrated an enhancing 1.2-cm cystic lesion in the posterior body of the left lateral ventricle.

Factors Associated with Recurrence of Tracheoesophageal Fistula.

BACKGROUND: Recurrence of tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) is reported in 8-20% patients. Factors that may influence recurrence of fistula beyond the postoperative period are not clear. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate possible factors associated with recurrence of TEF beyond the immediate postoperative period. METHODS: A single center, retrospective comparison of patients with and without recurrence of TEF was conducted. Medical records of patients previously operated for TEF who were followed in our pediatric pulmonary institute between January 2007 and December 2016 were reviewed. RESULTS: The med

Prevention of recurrence post leptomeningeal cyst repair.

Leptomeningeal cysts, which are cystic collections filled with cerebrospinal fluid, are rare complications following pediatric head trauma and surgical correction of craniosynostosis. These cysts develop due to cerebrospinal fluid pulsations and brain growth that cause expansion of the dural tears. Although primary repair of the dural defect is the definitive treatment, the risk of cyst recurrence remains. Factors that increase this risk include syndromic craniosynostosis, hydrocephalus, increased intracranial pressure, and inadequate duraplasty/cranioplasty. Here, we report the successful tre

Endometrial Stromal Sarcoma Recurrence in the Caecum.

Endometrial stromal sarcomas of uterus are quite rare. Most of the recurrences in these tumors are seen in the pelvis. However, extrapelvic recurrences and metastases to other parts are quite unusual. Here, we are reporting a rare case of caecal recurrence of endometrial stromal sarcoma. Case Report. A 52-year-old female presented to us with pain and lump in the right lower abdomen. The patient was earlier subjected to total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (TAHBSO) for low-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma. Postoperatively patient received radiotherapy but no hormon

Fear of cancer recurrence and death anxiety.

In 2013, 3 systematic reviews of fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) and its predictors were published. All 3 concurred that FCR is a highly prevalent problem and amongst the largest unmet needs of cancer survivors, even 5 or more years after treatment. However, between them they identified only 1 study that had investigated the relationship between death anxiety and FCR. This is surprising because it is well acknowledged that a diagnosis of cancer, a potentially life-threatening illness, is associated with a number of existential issues that give rise to psychological sequelae such as intrusive t

Remote Recurrence of Benign Multicystic Peritoneal Mesothelioma.

BACKGROUND: Benign peritoneal cystic mesothelioma (BPCM) is a rare disease entity that arises from mesothelioma cells. We describe a rare case of BPCM recurrence 36 years after its initial presentation. CASE: A 62-year-old woman was referred to an outpatient gynaecologic oncology clinic with an incidental finding of multiple pelvic cysts. She had a preceding history of known BPCM treated with extensive debulking surgery. She presented after 36 years of clinical remission. A repeat laparotomy for a debulking surgical procedure confirmed a recurrence of BPCM. CONCLUSION: Our current case repre

Remote orbital recurrence of olfactory neuroblastoma (esthesioneuroblastoma).

Olfactory neuroblastoma is a rare and often locally aggressive malignancy that invades the orbit via local destruction. It is known to recur in a delayed fashion, particularly to the neck lymph nodes. This is a case of a 65-year-old gentleman who presents with recurrence in the orbit and a neck lymph node 19 years after treatment for his initial disease. This report describes the longest known interval in orbital recurrence and should alert the monitoring physician that extreme delays in recurrence can occur.
