Seroepidemiology of rickettsioses in Sri Lanka: a patient based study.

BACKGROUND: Rickettsioses are emerging infections in Sri Lanka as shown by the increase in the number of clinically diagnosed rickettsial patients being reported to the Epidemiology Unit, Sri Lanka. However, mapping the disease for the whole island with laboratory confirmed cases has not been previously carried out. METHODS: 615 samples received from 23 hospital representing 8 provinces were tested using ELISA or IFA methods and clinical data was collected using a validated questionnaire. RESULTS: Rash was found among more spotted fever seropositive patients than scrub typhus seropositive pa

Dermatologic manifestations of arthropod-borne diseases.

The arthropod-borne rickettsial, borrelial, and bacterial diseases of North America are a diverse group of disorders that produce a wide variety of cutaneous abnormalities. These dermatologic abnormalities are often valuable clinical clues that may reveal or suggest the correct diagnosis to the astute clinician. We review the usual and unusual dermatologic manifestations of Rocky Mountain spotted fever, murine and sylvatic typhus, rickettsialpox, ehrlichiosis, Lyme disease, tick-borne relapsing fever, Colorado tick fever, and tularemia. In some of these diseases, skin manifestations may be dia

Diagnostic tests for Rocky Mountain spotted fever and other rickettsial diseases.

Rickettsial diseases continue to confound physicians because of their usually sporadic occurrence and nonspecific clinical presentation. In past years, diagnosis was confirmed only during convalescence; however, newer, more widely available methods, such as antigen detection and improved in vitro cultivation, have enabled a diagnosis at a time when therapeutic decisions are made. Molecular nucleic acid-based techniques have also expanded the spectrum of etiologic agents and illnesses caused by rickettsiae.

Trends in clinical diagnoses of typhus group rickettsioses among a large U.S. insurance claims database.

Typhus group rickettsioses (TGRs) are vector-borne diseases that include murine typhus (Rickettsia typhi) and epidemic typhus (R. prowazekii). Twentieth-century public health interventions led to dramatic decreases in incidence; little is known about the contemporary TGR prevalence because neither disease is nationally notifiable. We summarized administrative claims data in a commercially insured population to examine trends in TGR medical encounters. We analysed data from 2003 to 2016 IBM® MarketScan® Commercial Databases to identify persons with inpatient or outpatient visits with an Interna

Gene structure, activity and localization of a catalase from intracellular bacteria in Onchocerca volvulus.

Within the context of studies on the antioxidant enzymes in Onchocerca volvulus, DNA clones encoding catalase (CAT) were isolated from an O. volvulus adult lambda zapII cDNA library. Analysis of their nucleotide and encoded amino acid sequences revealed that they derive from intracellular bacteria, rather than the O. volvulus nuclear genome. The endobacterial CAT gene was found to lie in a gene cluster, followed by a ferritin gene and an excinuclease gene. The endobacterial CAT gene encodes a functional enzyme capable of detoxifying H2O2, demonstrated by producing an active recombinant protein

Cat scratch disease in Connecticut. Epidemiology, risk factors, and evaluation of a new diagnostic test.

BACKGROUND: Although cat scratch disease is commonly diagnosed in patients who have unexplained regional lymphadenopathy after encounters with cats, its epidemiology and the risk factors for disease are not clearly defined, and there is no generally accepted diagnostic test. METHODS: We conducted a physician survey to identify cases of cat scratch disease occurring over a 13-month period in cat owners in Connecticut. We interviewed both the patients (or their parents) and controls matched for age who owned cats. Serum from the patients was tested for antibodies to Rochalimaea henselae with a

Activation of Mechanistic Target of Rapamycin (mTOR) in Human Endothelial Cells Infected with Pathogenic Spotted Fever Group Rickettsiae.

Attributed to the tropism for host microvascular endothelium lining the blood vessels, vascular inflammation and dysfunction represent salient features of rickettsial pathogenesis, yet the details of fundamentally important pathogen interactions with host endothelial cells (ECs) as the primary targets of infection remain poorly appreciated. Mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR), a serine/threonine protein kinase of the phosphatidylinositol kinase-related kinase family, assembles into two functionally distinct complexes, namely mTORC1 (Raptor) and mTORC2 (Rictor), implicated in the determinati

[Possible types of tick-borne diseases and the predictive role of history data in their diagnosis (parasitological aspects of the problem)].

The paper discusses the proven and probable role of different tick-borne pathogens and their combinations in the occurrence of zoonotic diseases. The variants of coexistence of various combinations of 7 proved disease agents (3 species of Borrelia, 2 species of Ehrlichia, Babesia, and TBE virus) with different, if might to be, disease agents, such as rickettsiae of two groups, which do not belong to the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato group spirochetes, are analyzed. The difference of their development and the time of transmission after of the vector Ixodes persulcatus Schulze attachment are c

Prevalence of antibodies to spotted fever group rickettsiae in human beings and dogs from and endemic area of mediterranean spotted fever in Catalonia, Spain.

We assessed the prevalence of antibodies to spotted fever group rickettsiae in human beings and dogs by indirect immunofluorescence in the region of 'Vallés Occidental', Barcelona (Spain). In the group of 150 serum samples from patients without former history of Mediterranean spotted fever, 12 had antibodies to Rickettsia conori. The overall seroprevalence was 8% (95% confidence interval, 4.6% to 13.5%). There were no statistically significant differences between the mean ages of patients with positive and negative antibodies to R. conorii. However, seropositivity was significantly more common

RETRACTED: Tick-borne rickettsioses, neglected emerging diseases in rural Senegal.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

BACKGROUND: Rickettsioses are one of the most important causes of systemic febrile illness among travelers from developed countries, but little is known about their incidence in indigenous populations, especially in West Africa. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Overall seroprevalence evaluated by immunofluorescence using six rickettsial antigens (spotted fever and typhus group) in rural populations of two villages of the Sine-Saloum region of Senegal was found to be 21.4% and 51% for spotted fever group rickettsiae for Dielmo and Ndiop villages, respectively. We investigated the role of tick-b

Imaging of rickettsial, spirochetal, and parasitic infections.

This article is an update and literature review of the clinical and neuroimaging findings of the commonly known rickettsial, spirochetal, and eukaryotic parasitic infections. Being familiar with clinical presentation and imaging findings of these infections is crucial for early diagnosis and treatment especially in patients who live in or have a travel history to endemic regions or are immunocompromised.

Innate immune responses to endosymbiotic Wolbachia bacteria in Brugia malayi and Onchocerca volvulus are dependent on TLR2, TLR6, MyD88, and Mal, but not TLR4, TRIF, or TRAM.

The discovery that endosymbiotic Wolbachia bacteria play an important role in the pathophysiology of diseases caused by filarial nematodes, including lymphatic filariasis and onchocerciasis (river blindness) has transformed our approach to these disabling diseases. Because these parasites infect hundreds of millions of individuals worldwide, understanding host factors involved in the pathogenesis of filarial-induced diseases is paramount. However, the role of early innate responses to filarial and Wolbachia ligands in the development of filarial diseases has not been fully elucidated. To deter
