Inherited selective intestinal cobalamin malabsorption and cobalamin deficiency in dogs.

Inherited selective intestinal malabsorption of cobalamin (Cbl) was observed in a family of giant schnauzer dogs. Family studies and breeding experiments demonstrated simple autosomal recessive inheritance of this disease. Affected puppies exhibited chronic inappetence and failure to thrive beginning between 6 and 12 wk of age. Neutropenia with hypersegmentation, anemia with anisocytosis and poikilocytosis, and megaloblastic changes of the bone marrow were present. Serum Cbl concentrations were low, and methylmalonic aciduria and homocysteinemia were present. Parenteral, but not oral, cyanocob

Breeding without Mendelism: theory and practice of dairy cattle breeding in the Netherlands 1900-1950.

In the 1940s and 1950s, Dutch scientists became increasingly critical of the practices of commercial dairy cattle breeders. Milk yields had hardly increased for decades, and the scientists believed this to be due to the fact that breeders still judged the hereditary potential of their animals on the basis of outward characteristics. An objective verdict on the qualities of breeding stock could only be obtained by progeny testing, the scientists contended: the best animals were those that produced the most productive offspring. Some scientists had been making this claim since the beginning of t

Phenotypic and Genetic Evaluation of Morphometric and Dynamic Traits in Mangalarga Horses.

BACKGROUND: Genetic evaluation of morphometric and locomotor traits supports objective selection, avoiding exclusive reliance on subjective methods that may fixate breed traits over functionality or cause undesirable indirect selection. AIMS/OBJECTIVES: To evaluate genetic and phenotypic parameters for morphometric and dynamic traits in horses of the Mangalarga breed. METHODS: The pedigree included 212,361 animals born between 1919 and 2019. Phenotypic subsets for morphometric and dynamic traits comprised 54,617 and 45,010 horses, respectively, born between 1977 and 2019. Variance components

Bio-economic and operational feasibility of introducing oestrus synchronization and artificial insemination in simulated smallholder sheep breeding programmes.

Low selection intensity due to few selection candidates available at any one time due to thinly spread year-round lambings in villages and prohibitively large nucleus requirements to provide sufficient improved rams to the production tier are the major challenges for designing effective village-based and central nucleus-based breeding programmes, respectively, for smallholder sheep farmers. To tackle these challenges, we used deterministic simulation to design three schemes in village-based programmes introducing hormonal oestrus synchronization (natural oestrus (VNE), single oestrus synchroni

Decreased anxiety-like behavior in a selectively bred high nicotine-preferring rat line.

Genetic vulnerability contributes significantly to the individual variability observed in nicotine dependence. Selective breeding for sensitivity to a particular effect of abused drugs has produced rodent lines useful for studying genetic vulnerability to drug addiction. Previous research showed that anxiety-related personality traits are associated with nicotine dependence. Therefore, we examined the differences in anxiety-like behavior between a high nicotine-preferring rat line and their controls. At the beginning of the study, all rats, naïve to any drug, were exposed sequentially to open

Performance of genomic selection under a single-step approach in autochthonous Spanish beef cattle populations.

This study evaluated different strategies for implementing a single-step genomic selection programme in two autochthonous Spanish beef cattle populations (Pirenaica-Pi and Rubia Gallega-RG). The strategies were compared in terms of accuracy attained under different scenarios by simulating genomic data over the known genealogy. Several genotyping approaches were tested, as well as, other factors like marker density, effective population size, mutation rate and heritability of the trait. The results obtained showed gains in accuracy with respect to pedigree BLUP evaluation in all cases. The grea

Impact of genomic selection of AI dairy sires on their likely utilization and methods to estimate fertility: a paradigm shift.

Breeding of dairy cattle is undergoing a paradigm shift to genomic selection of potential sires and dams. This undoubtedly will affect how bulls are managed in an artificial insemination (AI) center and impact methods to estimate their 'fertility'. Our goal is to help decision-makers understand the contents of a straw of semen, current estimates of sire fertility, and how estimates might evolve in a genomic era. Sire fertility is estimated from outcome (pregnant or not) after 300 to > 2,000 inseminations and reported in units (U) as a sire's deviation from a population (> 500 bulls) average pr

Cattle genome-wide analysis reveals genetic signatures in trypanotolerant N'Dama.

BACKGROUND: Indigenous cattle in Africa have adapted to various local environments to acquire superior phenotypes that enhance their survival under harsh conditions. While many studies investigated the adaptation of overall African cattle, genetic characteristics of each breed have been poorly studied. RESULTS: We performed the comparative genome-wide analysis to assess evidence for subspeciation within species at the genetic level in trypanotolerant N'Dama cattle. We analysed genetic variation patterns in N'Dama from the genomes of 101 cattle breeds including 48 samples of five indigenous Af

High-throughput in vivo phenotyping of chicken carcass traits based on digital radiographic imaging.

BACKGROUND: Accurate phenotyping of breast, drumstick, and wing yield is essential for genetic improvement in poultry breeding. However, these key economic traits can traditionally be measured only after slaughter, forcing breeding programs to rely on time-consuming, costly, and operator-biased sibling testing. This has become a major challenge for large-scale, high-precision, and non-destructive phenotypic evaluation in commercial poultry breeding. In this study, a non-destructive in vivo phenotyping framework based on digital radiography (DR) imaging combined with deep learning and machine l

Optimizing phenotypic data analysis strategies to enhance genomic prediction in winter wheat breeding.

Proper analysis of phenotypic data is essential for reliable genomic prediction (GP) and sustained genetic gain in breeding programs. In this study, we used phenotypic and genotypic data generated from the winter wheat breeding program of Deutsche Saatveredelung AG (DSV), Lippstadt, Germany, comprising 1,941 genotypes and 6,335 SNP markers across three traits: grain yield, plant height, and heading date. We evaluated the impact of different two-stage analysis strategies: one using the environment (year × location combination) as the analysis unit (TS-S1) and the other using the breeding stage

Characteristics and seasonal variations in the semen of Alpine, Saanen and Damascus goat bucks born and raised in Greece.

Twenty-three purebred Alpine (n=8), Saanen (n=7) and Damascus (n=8) goat bucks raised at the Institute of Reproduction and Artificial Insemination in Thessaloniki, Greece (40 degrees 37 minutes N, 22 degrees 58 minutes E and altitude 32 m above sea level), were used to study the effect of photoperiod on semen production. Samples were collected with an artificial vagina and examined immediately after collection. In spite of the variation in nearly all semen characteristics studied among the 3 breeds of bucks, there was significant seasonal variation in both semen quantity (volume, concentration

Effects of various breeding strategies on diploid drone frequency and quantitative traits in a honey bee population.

When selecting in a finite population of honeybees there is a conflict between gain in a quantitative trait and increasing homozygosity, and therefore the frequency of inviable diploid drones. The consequences when using different mating, import, and selection strategies on diploid drone frequency and genetic gain, was explored with Monte Carlo computer simulations.Within a closed population breeding structure, mass selection gave the highest genetic gain in the quantitative trait, but also the largest increase in percentage diploid drones and queens with unacceptably-low brood viability. Mass

Review: Genetic selection of high-yielding dairy cattle toward sustainable farming systems in a rapidly changing world.

The massive improvement in food production, as a result of effective genetic selection combined with advancements in farming practices, has been one of the greatest achievements of modern agriculture. For instance, the dairy cattle industry has more than doubled milk production over the past five decades, while the total number of cows has been reduced dramatically. This was achieved mainly through the intensification of production systems, direct genetic selection for milk yield and a limited number of related traits, and the use of modern technologies (e.g., artificial insemination and genom

Genome-wide association mapping for type and mammary health traits in French dairy goats identifies a pleiotropic region on chromosome 19 in the Saanen breed.

Type traits and mammary health traits are important to dairy ruminant breeding because they influence animal health, milking ability, and longevity, as well as the economic sustainability of farms. The availability of the genomic sequence and a single nucleotide polymorphism chip in goats has opened up new fields of investigation to better understand the genes and mechanisms that underlie such complex traits and to be able to select them. Our objective was to perform a genome-wide association study in dairy goats for 11 type traits and somatic cell count (SCC) as proxies for mastitis resistanc

Pig Spermatozoa Defect in Acrosome Formation Caused Poor Motion Parameters and Fertilization Failure through Artificial Insemination and In vitro Fertilization.

The selection of morphologically normal spermatozoa is critical to obtain high breeding performances in boar breeding farms and artificial insemination (AI) centers. Parameters for the selection of semen mainly include total sperm motility, concentration, and morphology. However, these primary parameters are often not reliable for discriminating between normal and abnormal, non-fertilizable spermatozoa. The present study was designed to compare the motion characteristics, fertilization ability using in vitro fertilization (IVF), and acrosome formation of the semen from boars having low (boar n

BSA-Seq-Based QTL Mapping for the Height of the First Fruiting Branch Node of Cotton and the Development of Molecular Markers.

The height of the first fruiting branch node (HFFBN) is a core indicator for mechanical harvesting of cotton, and the development of molecular markers for this trait is important for accelerating the breeding process. In this study, using bulked segregant analysis coupled with whole-genome sequencing (BSA-seq), one quantitative trait locus (QTL) associated with the HFFBN was mapped; a molecular marker, qFBH7, associated with the HFFBN of cotton was developed; and its application value was systematically evaluated. A total of 20 lines with extreme phenotypes were selected from the recombinant i

Use of Morphology and Endocrinology to Predict Sex in California Sheephead: Evidence of Altered Timing of Sex Change at Santa Catalina Island, California.

To estimate the health of the California sheephead Semicossyphus pulcher fishery, a 2004 stock assessment used available biological data that were collected decades prior to an increase in fishing pressure. However, a recent study has found that sex ratios, growth rates, survivorship, and average sizes of females and males have changed in response to size-selective fishing in some California sheephead populations. To better understand the potential changes in protogynous California sheephead, this study sought to determine (1) whether external morphology was still an accurate method of predict
