In the United States, approximately 2% to 3% of adults and 8% of children have a food allergy. Allergic reactions range from minor pruritus to life-threatening anaphylaxis. These allergies often lead to significant anxiety and costs for patients and caregivers. Common food allergies include peanuts, cow's milk, shellfish, tree nuts, egg, fish, soy, and wheat. Peanut allergy, the most common, is the leading cause of life-threatening anaphylaxis. Children with asthma, allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, or an allergy to insect venom, medications, or latex are at an increased risk of developing

OBJECTIVES: Shewanella algae is an environmental marine bacterium and an emerging opportunistic human pathogen. Moreover, there are increasing reports of strains showing multidrug resistance, particularly carbapenem-resistant isolates. Although S. algae has been found in bivalve shellfish aquaculture, there is very little genome-wide data on resistance determinants in S. algae from shellfish. The aim of this study was to determine the whole genome sequence of carbapenem-resistant S. algae strain AC isolated from small abalone in Taiwan.
METHODS: Bacterial genomic DNA was sequenced using an Il

Mercury and other contaminants in coastal and open-ocean ecosystems are an issue of great concern globally and in the United States, where consumption of marine fish and shellfish is a major route of human exposure to methylmercury (MeHg). A recent National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences-Superfund Basic Research Program workshop titled "Fate and Bioavailability of Mercury in Aquatic Ecosystems and Effects on Human Exposure," convened by the Dartmouth Toxic Metals Research Program on 15-16 November 2006 in Durham, New Hampshire, brought together human health experts, marine scientis

Food allergies in children present with a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations, including anaphylaxis, urticaria, angioedema, atopic dermatitis and gastrointestinal symptoms (such as vomiting, diarrhoea and failure to thrive). Symptoms usually begin in the first 2 years of life, often after the first known exposure to the food. Immediate reactions (occurring between several minutes and 2 hours after ingestion) are likely to be IgE-mediated and can usually be detected by skin prick testing (SPT) or measuring food-specific serum IgE antibody levels. Over 90% of IgE-mediated food allergies in

Listeria monocytogenes is an important pathogen which causes an infection called listeriosis. Because of the high mortality rate (~30%) associated with listeriosis, and the widespread nature of the organism, it is a major concern for food and water microbiologists since it has been isolated from various types of foods, including seafood, as well as from the aqueous environment. To investigate the prevalence of this pathogen in the Aqaba Gulf (12 sites), Suez Gulf (14 sites) and Red Sea (14 sites), 200 water samples (collected during five sampling cruises in 2004), 40 fresh fish samples and 15

Shellfish have been identified as a potential source of Cryptosporidium infection for humans. The inactivation of Cryptosporidium parvum and other pathogens in raw molluscan shellfish would provide increased food safety for normal and at-risk consumers. The present study identified the efficacy of a non-thermal alternative food-processing treatment, high hydrostatic pressure processing (HPP), on the viability of C. parvum oocysts in the Eastern oysters Crassostrea virginica. Oysters were artificially exposed to 2 x 10(7) oocysts of the Beltsville strain of C. parvum in seawater and subjected t

Recent studies have provided a greater understanding of the movement of viruses in the environment by their attachment to solids. These studies have focused on solids-associated viruses present in wastewater discharged into the ocean and on viruses in sludge and wastewater that may be retained in soil following their land disposal. Such ocean or land disposal of wastewater and sludge may result in a discharge of one or more of 120 human enteric virus pathogens including those causing poliomyelitis, viral hepatitis A and acute gastroenteritis.Solids-associated viruses in effluents discharged in

Although common, food allergy is vastly overestimated by patients. The main food allergens include cow's milk, eggs, nuts, shellfish and whitefish. Other types of adverse food reactions are numerous; their cause represent a spectrum of toxins, infectious organisms and pharmacologic agents. A definitive diagnosis may be difficult. Recommended measures include prevention through breast feeding, avoidance of known offenders and symptomatic therapy when reactions occur.

Viral diseases are among the most serious threats to shrimp aquaculture, causing large-scale mortality and production losses. This review summarizes current knowledge on the major viral diseases affecting cultured penaeid shrimp and freshwater prawns, with particular emphasis on white spot syndrome virus (WSSV), yellow head virus (YHV), Taura syndrome virus (TSV), infectious hypodermal and hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHHNV), infectious myonecrosis virus (IMNV), and Macrobrachium rosenbergii nodavirus (MrNV), the causative agent of white tail disease. We present a comparative overview of thei

Exercise-induced anaphylaxis (EIA) and its subtype, food dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis are uncommon and therefore underdiagnosed forms of physical allergy. Triggers include various degrees of exercise in combination with ingestion of specific food products. Treatment remains identical to that of IgE-mediated allergic reactions. The presentation is commonly underdiagnosed and caries significant fatality risk, and this case should raise the awareness of the attending physician.

Paragonimiasis is a common parasitic zoonosis in China. Its clinical manifestations may be classified into two clinical entities, eg, paragonimiasis westermani type and paragonimiasis szechuanensis type. The latter mainly manifests as trematode larva migrans. The immunodiagnostic methods frequently used in the diagnosis of paragonimiasis are intradermal test, CFT and ELISA. The detection of circulating antigens in patients has been used in China for diagnosis and bithionol and praziquantel are drugs of choice in the treatment of paragonimiasis. Combined measures including mass survey, mass tre

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: This study investigates spontaneous adverse drug reactions (ADRs) to glucosamine and chondroitin in the Australian population between 2000 and 2011, with a primary focus on hypersensitivity reactions.
STUDY DESIGN: Case reports of ADR to glucosamine and chondroitin sent to the Therapeutic Goods Administration between 2000 and 2011 were obtained and analysed. The demographic information and severity of the ADR were recorded for individual ADR cases. These reactions were classified according to the Brown et al grading system for generalised hypersensitivity reactions. This

The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of low fish consumption on prenatal and early postnatal exposure to mercury species. The samples of umbilical cord blood and maternal milk as well as interviewer-administered questionnaires were collected from 142 Slovak mother-child pairs. The mean total mercury (THg) concentrations in cord blood and milk were 0.949 μg/L and 0.376 μg/kg, respectively. The mean methylmercury (MeHg) concentration in cord blood was 0.504 μg/L. Fish eaters had significantly higher cord blood MeHg concentrations than non-fish eaters (p = 0.030); no difference

The usual dietary sources of vitamin B12 are animal-source based foods, including meat, milk, eggs, fish, and shellfish, although a few plant-based foods such as certain types of dried lavers (nori) and mushrooms contain substantial and considerable amounts of vitamin B12, respectively. Unexpectedly, detailed characterization of vitamin B12 compounds in foods reveals the presence of various corrinoids that are inactive in humans. The majority of edible blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) and certain edible shellfish predominately contain an inactive corrinoid known as pseudovitamin B12. Various f

Brevetoxins are neurotoxins produced by marine dinoflagellates, primarily Karenia brevis, and can cause intoxication and even mortality of marine species, affect human health through the consumption of brevetoxin-contaminated shellfish, and effect respiratory irritation through aerosol exposure at coastal areas. Brevetoxin-A and brevetoxin-B, the major brevetoxins produced in algae, are metabolized to a series of amino acid and peptide-related derivatives in shellfish through the reactions of the amino acid residue cysteine with an α,β-unsaturated aldehyde group. In this paper, covalent intera

Okadaic acid (OA) is a phycotoxin produced by dinoflagellates. It accumulates in the digestive tracts of shellfish causing diarrhetic shellfish poisoning (DSP) in consumers. OA is a tumour promoter, and an inhibitor of both protein phosphatases and protein synthesis. OA induces DNA adducts, suggesting it may be carcinogenic. Since the Ames test without S(9) was negative, but a mutagenesis test was positive in mammalian cells, the question as to whether its molecular mechanism is genotoxic or epigenetic became unavoidable. Therefore, experiments were performed to search for epigenetic effects,

On the basis of observations that biospecific random copolymers (RACS) could induce phenotypic changes on contact with selected eukaryotic or prokaryotic cell lines, polystyrene derivatives of known compositions and obtained by random substitutions of sodium sulfonate and of sulfamides of aspartic acid dimethyl ester, phenylalanine and leucine, were placed in contact with swimming dinophytes of the PSP toxin producing species Alexandrium minutum and of the non-toxic species Heterocapsa triquetra. A. minutum cells exhibited higher adhesion for the random copolymer made up of polystyrene (29%),
