We studied four young patients with occipital lobe seizures (elementary visual hallucinations, blindness, and tonic deviation of the eyes) and electroencephalographic (EEG) abnormalities of occipital spike and slow-wave activity, which occurred continuously as long as the eyes were closed. The EEG abnormalities were inhibited by opened eyes in an illuminated room and returned immediately in darkness. Opening and closing the eyes in darkness did not alter the continuously occurring spike and slow-wave activity. The retention of central vision in darkness, caused by looking at a red spot of ligh

RATIONALE: Selective rapid eye movement sleep (REMS) deprivation using the platform-on-water ("flower pot") method causes sleep rebound with increased REMS, decreased REMS latency, and activation of the melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) expressing neurons in the hypothalamus. MCH is implicated in the pathomechanism of depression regarding its influence on mood, feeding behavior, and REMS.
OBJECTIVES: We investigated the effects of the most selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor escitalopram on sleep rebound following REMS deprivation and, in parallel, on the activation of MCH-containing neu

Part I. The EEG recordings of 434 patients were activated by graded sleep deprivation. In clinically manifest epilepsies with a predominantly negative EEG tracing at rest the incidence of epileptic manifestations increased after sleep deprivation from 18.03% to 59.01%, in clinically suspect epilepsies from 6.4% to 39.0%. In other paroxysmal affections such as febrile convulsions, syncopes and collapses, paroxysms of abdominal pain or headaches, affective paroxysms and nocturnal terrors, the tracing activation by sleep deprivation mostly facilitated differential diagnosis between those affectio

The function of sleep in mammal and other vertebrates is one of the great mysteries of biology. Many hypotheses have been proposed, but few of these have made even the slightest attempt to explain the essence of sleep - the uncompromising need for reversible unconsciousness. During sleep, epiphenomena - often of a somatic character - occur, but these cannot explain the core function of sleep. One answer could be hidden in the observations made for long periods of time of the function of the central nervous system (CNS). The CNS is faced with conflicting requirements on stability and excitabili

The background pattern is described in terms of frequency and amplitude. Waves of varying frequencies may be normal or abnormal, depending on the patient's age and state of wakefulness. Specific features sought in the EEG are slowing of frequency, asymmetry of frequency or amplitude, paroxysmal disturbances, and spikes and sharp waves. Certain abnormalities may be present only after provocation by hyperventilation, sleep deprivation or induction, photic stimulation or drugs.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between alterations of functional brain network and cognition in patients with benign epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (BECTS) as a function of spike-wave index (SWI) during slow wave sleep.
METHODS: Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (RS-fMRI) data and Intelligence Quotient (IQ) were collected from two groups of patients with BECTS, including a SWI<50% group (5 cases) and a SWI≥50% group (7 cases). The SWI was calculated from the long-term video-electroencephalogram monitoring (one sleep cycle was in

General anesthesia is often compared to sleep but may more closely resemble a medically induced coma. While all three states involve a loss of awareness, the extent of their neural similarity remains unclear. Electrophysiological markers, such as delta activity (< 4 Hz), are present in slow wave sleep, disorders of consciousness (DoC, including coma), and propofol anesthesia but are absent during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. Frontal alpha oscillations are a key feature of propofol anesthesia and detectable via intraoperative EEG. However, it remains unclear whether alpha and delta activity

This paper reviews the present knowledge about the cellular origins of vigilance states (wakefulness and slow-wave sleep) from the perspective of their involvement in the triggering of epileptic seizures. The data stem from intracellular recordings (most of them dual impalements of pairs of neurons and glia), extracellular ionic concentrations (mainly K and Ca ) and simultaneous intracortical field potentials from the cortex of cats. These data were corroborated with recordings from naturally sleeping animals and humans. It is shown that sleep is dominated by a cortically generated slow (<1 Hz

REM-sleep behavior disorder (RBD), a form of parasomnia, is characterized by motor and/or speech activity during sleep corresponding to the dream content. RBD is currently considered as a marker of onset of neurodegenerative diseases (sinucleinopathies) and as a most specific early symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD). The authors describe a clinical case of a patient with the combination of essential tremor, initial signs of PD and RBD. A polysomnographic study has confirmed clinical signs of RBD and determined the disturbances of sleep architecture: the increase in falling asleep, number of a

Ponto-geniculo-occipital waves precede rapid eye movement sleep and play an important role in triggering and maintaining rapid eye movement sleep. Ponto-geniculo-occipital waves have been implicated in several important functions such as sensorimotor integration, learning, cognition, development of the visual system, visual hallucination, and startle response. Peribrachial area neurons have long been thought to play a key role in the triggering of ponto-geniculo-occipital wave. However, the exact location within the peribrachial area for triggering pontine ponto-geniculo-occipital wave has not

Confusional arousal is the milder expression of a family of disorders known as Disorders of Arousal (DOA) from non-REM sleep. These disorders are characterized by recurrent abnormal behaviors that occur in a state of reduced awareness for the external environment. Despite frequent amnesia for the nocturnal events, when actively probed, patients are able to report vivid hallucinatory/dream-like mental imagery. Traditional (low-density) scalp and stereo-electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings previously showed a pathological admixture of slow oscillations typical of NREM sleep and wake-like fas

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: To investigate the complaint of unrefreshing sleep with study of sleep electroencephalogram (EEG) in patients with chronic fatigue.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fourteen successively seen patients (mean age: 41.1 9.8) who complained of chronic fatigue but denied sleepiness and agreed to participate were compared to 14 controls (33.6+/-10.2 years) who were monitored during sleep recorded in parallel. After performing conventional sleep scoring we applied Fast Fourier Transformation (FFT) for the delta 1, delta 2, theta, alpha, sigma 1, sigma 2, beta EEG frequency bands. The pr

With age, the consolidation of nocturnal sleep decreases, daytime napping increases, and sleep occurs earlier. Sleep regulation is dependent on the interaction between a circadian pacemaker (biological clock) and the sleep homeostat (sleep pressure increasing with duration of time awake). We have shown that in the healthy elderly, the amplitude of circadian rhythms (e. g. melatonin secretion) declines, as does slow wave sleep, parallel with an increase in afternoon sleepiness and a tendency to fall asleep in the early evening when younger subjects do not. Light is the major zeitgeber to stabil

Sleep is known to play an active role in consolidating new vocabulary in adults; however, the mechanisms by which sleep promotes vocabulary consolidation in childhood are less well understood. Furthermore, there has been no investigation into whether previously reported differences in sleep architecture might account for variability in vocabulary consolidation in children with dyslexia. Twenty-three children with dyslexia and 29 age-matched typically developing peers were exposed to 16 novel spoken words. Typically developing children showed overnight improvements in novel word recall; the siz
