Ataxia-telangiectasia (AT) is an autosomal recessive, multisystem disease causing cerebellar ataxia, mucocutaneous telangiectasias, immunodeficiency, and malignancies. A pilot study reported cognitive and behavioral manifestations characteristic of the cerebellar cognitive affective / Schmahmann syndrome (CCAS). We set out to test and further define these observations because a more comprehensive understanding of the spectrum of impairments in AT is essential for optimal management. Twenty patients (12 males; 9.86 ± 5.5 years, range 4.3 to 23.2) were grouped by age: AT-I (toddlers and preschoo

Spatial omics technologies decipher functional components of complex organs at cellular and subcellular resolutions. We introduce Spatial Graph Fourier Transform (SpaGFT) and apply graph signal processing to a wide range of spatial omics profiling platforms to generate their interpretable representations. This representation supports spatially variable gene identification and improves gene expression imputation, outperforming existing tools in analyzing human and mouse spatial transcriptomics data. SpaGFT can identify immunological regions for B cell maturation in human lymph nodes Visium data

Humans can quickly extract spatial regularities from sequences to reduce working memory (WM) load, yet the electrophysiological mechanisms remain unclear. Although previous studies have underscored the role of frontal-midline theta (FM-theta) in sequential WM processing, whether and how spatial regularity modulates FM-theta is unknown. To investigate this, we varied the spatial relation between successive items-more repetitions of the same displacement yielded fewer unique chunks and thus higher regularity-while sequence length stayed fixed. Participants were asked to encode, maintain and repr

RATIONALE: Accumulating evidence in humans demonstrated that visuo-spatial deficits are the most consistently reported cognitive abnormalities in Parkinson disease (PD). These deficits have been generally attributed to cortical dopamine degeneration. However, more recent evidence suggests that dopamine loss in the striatum is responsible for the visuo-spatial abnormalities in PD. Studies based on animal models of PD did not specifically address this question.
OBJECTIVES: Thus, the first goal of this study was to analyze the role of dopamine within the dorsal striatum in spatial memory. We tes

We theoretically propose topological spatial differentiators by the normal-incidence reflection of light. Firstly, a three-dimensional propagation model is established for the light normally incident on the interface between two media. It is found that due to the spin-orbit interaction of light, a given circularly polarized light always induces oppositely polarized light carrying a topological charge, so the two intrinsic spin components are separated radially or azimuthally. Moreover, the normally reflected fields are approximately proportional to two kinds of second-order spatial differentia

There is evidence that visuo-spatial capacity can become overloaded when processing a secondary visual task (Dual Task, DT), as occurs in daily life. Hence, we investigated the influence of the visuo-spatial interference in the identification of emotional facial expressions (EFEs) in early stages of Parkinson's disease (PD). We compared the identification of 24 emotional faces that illustrate six basic emotions in, unmedicated recently diagnosed PD patients (16) and healthy adults (20), under two different conditions: a) simple EFE identification, and b) identification with a concurrent visuo-

It is generally accepted that in mammals visual information is sent to the brain along functionally specialized parallel pathways, but whether the mouse visual system uses similar processing strategies is not known. It is important to resolve this issue because the mouse brain provides a tractable system for developing a cellular and molecular understanding of disorders affecting spatiotemporal visual processing. We have used single-unit recordings in mouse primary visual cortex to study whether individual neurons are more sensitive to one set of sensory cues than another. Our quantitative ana

Deficits at the earliest stages of information processing are among the most consistent abnormalities found in schizophrenics. To better understand the deficit, the present study indirectly evaluated the functional status of two visual channels, transient and sustained, which have been implicated in early information processing. A forced-choice, two-pulse detection task was used to determine the duration that subjects required to detect a blank interval (ISI) separating a two pulse grating vs. a single pulse grating. Threshold ISI was used as the index of visible persistence. Four groups of su

Parameters of a formal working-memory model were estimated for verbal and spatial memory updating of children. The model proposes interference though feature overwriting and through confusion of whole elements as the primary cause of working-memory capacity limits. We tested 2 age groups each containing 1 group of normal intelligence and 1 deficit group. For young children the deficit was developmental dyslexia; for older children it was a general learning difficulty. The interference model predicts less interference through overwriting but more through confusion of whole elements for the dysl

The present study investigated basic numerical skills and arithmetic in adults with developmental dyslexia. Participants performed exact and approximate calculation, basic numerical tasks (e.g., counting; symbolic number comparison; spatial-numerical association of response codes, SNARC), and visuospatial tasks (mental rotation and visual search tasks). The group with dyslexia showed a marginal impairment in counting compared to age- and IQ-matched controls, and they were impaired in exact addition, in particular with respect to speed. They were also significantly slower in multiplication. In

We have previously shown the visual form agnosic patient D.F. has spared sensorimotor utilization of visual information relative to her poor perceptual processing of the same stimulus attributes. Her visuomotor skills are, however, only normal when egocentric visual coding can be used in the task. In other words, her egocentric sensorimotor processing is intact while her 'allocentric' coding of spatial position is impaired. The current investigation extends these previous observations by comparing D.F.'s performance in bimanual pointing to pairs of stimuli directly (the egocentric task) versus

This study compares neuropsychological functioning in a Japanese schizophrenia spectrum disorder group and a group of healthy Japanese volunteers. Participants were 37 patients diagnosed with schizophrenia, 28 schizotypal patients, and 99 psychiatrically-normal volunteers. A wide range of cognitive measures were examined. All participants completed a Japanese version of a neuropsychological battery assessing executive function, working memory, processing speed, language, verbal memory, and spatial organization. Comparisons of neuropsychological function demonstrated similarities and difference

The lateralized readiness potential as a measure of response tendencies has become a relevant method in experimental psychology within the last decade. This measure delivers information about response preparation long before the overt response. Applying the method of measuring event-related lateralizations (ERL) of the EEG to posterior sites, correlates of processing of spatial information and of response selection have been found. The present study investigated the topographical distribution of asymmetries at the moment of response selection. Response selection was assumed to be reflected in

Episodic memory involves the processing of spatial and temporal aspects of personal experiences. The lateral entorhinal cortex (LEC) plays an essential role in subserving memory. However, the specific mechanism by which LEC integrates spatial and temporal information remains elusive. Here, we recorded LEC neurons while rats performed foraging and shuttling behaviors on one-dimensional, linear or circular tracks. Unlike open-field foraging tasks, many LEC cells displayed spatial firing fields in these tasks and demonstrated selectivity for traveling directions. Furthermore, some LEC neurons dis

BACKGROUND: Gait variability is a common feature in neurodegenerative diseases and has been linked to cognitive impairment. Despite this link, the influence of specific cognitive domains, such as memory, visual spatial skills, executive function, and verbal function on gait variability is not well-understood.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the predictive value of these specific cognitive domains on gait variability in people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia during preferred and dual task walking.
METHOD: One hundred and two participants with either MCI or dementia underwent a com

Experiencing binocularly conflicting signals early in life dramatically alters the binocular responses of cortical neurons. Because visual cortex is highly plastic during a critical period of development, cortical deficits resulting from early abnormal visual experience often mirror the nature of interocular decorrelation of neural signals from the two eyes. In the preceding paper, we demonstrated that monkeys that experienced early alternating monocular defocus (-1.5, -3.0, or -6.0 D) show deficits in stereopsis that generally reflected the magnitude of imposed monocular defocus. Because thes

Accurate diagnosis of clinically significant prostate cancer (csPCa) from multi-view MRI scans (axial, sagittal, coronal) is essential for effective treatment planning and improved outcomes. Although deep learning has advanced prostate MRI analysis, many approaches adopt late fusion strategies aggregating flattened features independently from each view, resulting in loss of spatial information and anatomical correspondence across views, ultimately limiting diagnostic performance. While Vision Transformers offer flexibility for multi-view patches, their memory requirements scale quadratically,

Memory impairments, including spatial and object processing, are often observed in individuals with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders. The neurobiological basis of memory deficits after prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) is often linked to structural and functional alterations in the medial temporal lobe, including the hippocampus. Recent evidence suggests that the medial temporal lobe plays a critical role in processing high-order sensory stimuli such as complex objects and their associated locations in space. In the first experiment, we tested male rat offspring with moderate PAE in a medial tem

According to recent models of visuo-spatial processing, the medial parieto-occipital cortex is a crucial node of the dorsal visual stream. Evidence from neurophysiological studies in monkeys has indicated that the parieto-occipital sulcus (POS) contains three functionally and cytoarchitectonically distinct areas: the visual area V6 in the fundus of the POS, and the visuo-motor areas V6Av and V6Ad in a progressively dorsal and anterior location with respect to V6. Besides different topographical organization, cytoarchitectonics, and functional properties, these three monkey areas can also be di
