Long-term use of mandibular advancement splints for snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea: a questionnaire survey.

A mandibular advancement splint (MAS) may be an alternative treatment for snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). However, there is little subjective or objective information concerning long-term effectiveness, compliance and side effects. A retrospective questionnaire was used to survey these issues plus patient satisfaction and maintenance requirements in 166 patients who could have worn a mandibular advancement splint for over a year. One-hundred and twenty-six (76%) subjects returned the questionnaire, (84 with OSA, 42 snorers), of whom 69 (55%) reported still using the splint regularl

Application of fully digital occlusal splints in painful temporomandibular disorders: a randomized controlled clinical study.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical efficacy of digital occlusal splints in alleviating pain and dysfunction in patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and underlying mechanisms. METHODS: TMD patients were enrolled and divided into digital and conventional occlusal splint groups (n = 66/group). Clinical outcomes, including visual analog scale (VAS) scores and temporomandibular function indices [Craniomandibular Index (CMI), Dysfunction Index (DI), Palpation Index (PI)], were assessed pre- and post-treatment. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) was used to analyze condylar positional

Exposed digits increase weight bearing and alter sub-bandage pressures in dogs with forelimb splints.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to evaluate the difference in weight bearing in a toes-in splint versus a toes-out forelimb splint and to determine the difference in sub-bandage pressures between the groups. We hypothesized that (1) weight bearing would not be different between the 2 splints and that (2) sub-bandage pressures would be distributed higher on the distal digits in the toes-out splint and pressures would be more evenly distributed across the paw in the toes-in splint. METHODS: In this controlled crossover trial, a random forelimb of 10 healthy dogs was bandaged with a splint

The Use of a CAD/CAM Thermoformed Splints System in Closed Reduction of Condylar Fractures.

(1) Background: Mandibular fractures are very common. Common indications of closed treatment for mandibular fractures are non-displaced or minimally displaced simple fractures in adult compliant patients with good dentition, the absence of occlusal disruption, and fractures in growing children. In closed treatment, the mandible is maintained in centric occlusion with a maxillomandibular fixation (MMF) with orthodontic elastics. Many methods of MMF have been described, often using orthodontic appliances. In recent years, CAD-CAM technology has improved many procedures used in maxillofacial surg

Fully digital workflow for the fabrication of occlusal stabilization splints based on individual mandibular movement.

OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to present a completely digital workflow for the fabrication of occlusal stabilization splints using CAD/CAM systems and a digital face bow based on optical sensor technology. METHODS: Digital scans of the maxillary and mandibular arches of 20 volunteers were obtained using an intraoral scanner. Jaw relation and mandibular movements were recorded with a digital face bow via optical sensors. The virtual increase of the vertical dimension of occlusion (VDO) was then performed, after which computer-aided design (CAD) of the occlusal stabilization splints was c

Effects of Occlusal Splints on Spinal Posture in Patients with Temporomandibular Disorders: A Systematic Review.

There is still a gap in the scientific knowledge on the linkage between craniofacial structure and spinal postural control in temporomandibular disorder (TMD) patients. This systematic review aimed to assess the role of occlusal splints on spinal posture of TMD patients. PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus were systematically searched from inception until 5 January 2022 to identify observational studies with a longitudinal study design presenting: patients with diagnosis of TMD according to the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD); occlusal splint therapy as intervention

Treatment of Masticatory Muscle Pain with Acupuncture: Is It Necessary to Associate with Occlusal Splints?

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are treated by different modalities including splints, physiotherapy, and acupuncture. Although all of these offer evidencebased benefits to the patients, avoiding overtreatment is of paramount importance. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of muscle pain treatment with acupuncture combined with or without occlusal splints. METHODS: Recruited patients were allocated to G1 (acupuncture) and G2 (acupuncture and occlusal splint) groups and treated in four consecutive weekly sessions (P1, P2, P3, and P4). The reported pain (RP) and the pressure

The Superiority of Removable Contact Splints in the Healing of Diabetic Foot during Postoperative Care.

OBJECTIVE: Off-loading is one of the crucial components of diabetic foot (DF) therapy. However, there remains a paucity of studies on the most suitable off-loading for DF patients under postoperative care. The aim of our study was to evaluate the effect of different protective off-loading devices on healing and postoperative complications in DF patients following limb preservation surgery. METHODS: This observational study comprised 127 DF patients. All enrolled patients had undergone foot surgery and were off-loaded empirically as follows: wheelchair+removable contact splint (RCS) (group R:

Treatment of temporomandibular disorders by stabilising splints in general dental practice: results after initial treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Little is known about how effective general dental practitioners (GDPs) are in treating temporomandibular disorders (TMD). The overall aim of this study was to compare the lower stabilising splint (SS) with a non-occluding control (CS) for the management of TMD in general dental practice. METHOD: A total of 93 TMD patients attending 11 GDPs were randomly allocated to SS or CS. Diagnosis was according to International Headache Society Criteria. Outcome criteria included pain visual analogue scale (VAS), number of tender muscles, aggregate joint tenderness, inter-incisal opening,

Is the Denis Browne Splint a Myth? A Long-Term Prospective Cohort Study in Clubfoot Management using Denis Browne Splint Versus Daily Exercise Protocol.

The Ponseti technique is successful in idiopathic clubfoot management. However, the leading cause of relapse and recurrence is nonadherence to the Denis Brown bracing protocol. This necessitates more extensive soft tissue surgeries. Based on a detailed up-to-date search, we have found that no other studies provide such a modified Ponseti technique. This study is unique, as it depends on using specific stretching exercises instead of bracing during management. Between August 2009 and June 2019, a consecutive series of 194 isolated idiopathic clubfoot patients (251 feet) were included in this st

18 F-NaF PET/CT in "Shin Splint" Syndrome.

A 28-year-old woman runner was referred for bilateral lower limb pain, associated with diffuse pelvic pain. 18 F-NaF PET/CT was performed. It revealed diffuse longitudinal uptake along the posteromedial cortical bone of both tibias, without abnormality on CT, highly suggestive of "shin splint" syndrome, also known as medial tibial stress syndrome (MTSS). The patient reported a significant reduction in pain following a decrease in training intensity. Our case suggests that 18 F-NaF PET/CT may be a relevant alternative to SPECT/CT in diagnosing "shin splint" syndrome, especially in times of moly

Clinical evaluation of 3D printed splint in the treatment of temporomandibular disorders.

OBJECTIVE: To use a T-scan (Tekscan, Boston, USA) to evaluate the grinding effect of a three-dimensional (3D) printed occlusal splint and provide reference guidelines for adjusting occlusion and alleviating temporomandibular joint symptoms before orthodontic treatment. METHODS: Eighteen patients with temporomandibular disorder (TMD) were treated with 3D-printed stable occlusal plates for three months. The occlusal time (OT) of the dentition and the difference percentage of occlusal force between the left and right sides (Asymmetry index of occlusal force, AOF) were observed one week, one, two

Adverse effects of splinting of luxated primary teeth: A systematic review.

Traumatic dental injuries of primary teeth are considered as dental emergencies and public health problems because of the higher global prevalence. Dental literature in regard to optimal treatment options for periodontal injuries of primary teeth (luxation injuries) is quite limited and perplexing in terms of treatment outcomes/prognosis due to several relevant factors. To date, there has been no systematic review published in context of exploring and analyzing the unfavorable outcomes/adverse effects of splinting the luxated primary teeth and its effect on permanent successors teeth. Hence, t
