Ankle braces are commonly recommended for prevention of ankle sprains, especially secondary sprains, rehabilitation, and return to normal activity or sport after injury. One common resistance to use is the feeling that braces will impede functional performance. For people with chronic ankle instability, the limited research indicates that the use of semirigid, lace-up, or soft-shell braces will not affect, and in some cases, may enhance performance. Activities that could be enhanced are jumping, hopping, and dynamic balance.

BACKGROUND: The influence of player workload on hamstring and calf injuries in professional baseball players remains unknown.
HYPOTHESIS: Increased workload would significantly increase hamstring and calf strain injury risk.
STUDY DESIGN: Case-control.
LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 3.
METHODS: All professional baseball players who sustained a hamstring or calf injury between 2011 and 2017 were identified using the Major League Baseball (MLB) Health and Injury Tracking System (HITS). A separate player usage dataset was used to determine workload. We then compared these variables between player g

Ankle sprains (AS) are common in the military population, with a prevalence 5 to 8 times higher than that for civilians. The aim of this study was to evaluate in patients with severe AS the impact of disuse on thigh muscle induced by unloading and immobilization due to care. This study focused on muscle trophicity and dynamometric strength. In this observational prospective study, assessments were repeated at 3 visits: close to injury, 15 and 30 days following the sprain. The injured limb was compared to the contralateral limb. A dynamometer assessment was used to monitor changes in strength a

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Acute ankle sprains frequently occur in active children and adolescents but may be the initial clinical presentation of other less common disorders affecting the lower extremities. There are many conditions that may cause one or multiple episodes of ankle injury that are misdiagnosed as an acute ankle sprain. This manuscript highlights diagnoses that should be considered when evaluating and managing a child or adolescent who presents initially and/or repeatedly with an acute ankle sprain.
RECENT FINDINGS: In recent years, various studies have continued to note the prevalenc

BACKGROUND: This study presents a kinematic analysis of an acute lateral ankle sprain incurred during a televised badminton match. The kinematics of this injury were compared to those of 19 previously reported cases in the published literature.
METHODS: Four camera views of an acute lateral ankle sprain incurred during a televised badminton match were synchronized and rendered in 3-dimensional animation software. A badminton court with known dimensions was built in a virtual environment, and a skeletal model scaled to the injured athlete's height was used for skeletal matching. The ankle join

BACKGROUND: A lateral ankle sprain (LAS) is the most common musculoskeletal injury in the physically active population. It is uncertain what percentage of these patients develop persisting symptoms including pain, recurrent sprains and subjective instability. This systematic review was conducted to assess the presence and duration of persistent symptoms after a first LAS.
METHODS: A systematic review of the Medline, Web of Sciences, Embase, CINAHL and Pedro databases was performed to identify peer-reviewed articles concerning the occurrence and duration of remaining symptoms after a first LAS

INTRODUCTION: The high frequency and number of ankle inversion injuries and meniscal injuries in military populations is an area of concern due to the debilitating effects and cumulative consequences of these particular injuries on the soldiers sustaining injury and the consequences on the operational effectiveness of the Israeli Defense Force (IDF). This study examines the possible relationship between ankle inversion injury and potential for subsequent meniscal injury in infantry soldiers in the IDF.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: All 89,069 infantry combat soldiers (including special units), recrui

Hamstring strain injury (HSI) remains the most common muscle injury in high-intensity running in humans. The majority of acute HSI occur specifically within the proximal region of the long head of biceps femoris and there is a sustained interest among researchers in understanding the factors that predispose to HSI. The present critical review describes the current understanding of biceps femoris long head (BFlh) structural features that might influence strain injury risk. Inter-individual differences in muscle-tendon architecture and interactions, muscle fiber type and region-specific innervat

Lateral ankle sprain is the most frequent musculoskeletal injury in the young athlete. Myths, dogma and common belief are regularly encountered when discussing this injury, for which the scientific literature does not prevail yet. In the youth, the growing skeleton further influences the diagnosis and therapeutic processes, as well as the healing potential. For the athlete, a fast recovery and return to sports without recurrence are a priority. In this specific context, an integrated management of the ankle sprain in the young athlete must be based on an adequate diagnosis, a sound knowledge o

Injuries to the syndesmotic ligaments of the ankle or "high ankle sprains" are common in acute ankle trauma but can be difficult to diagnose both clinically and on imaging. Missed injuries to the syndesmosis can lead to chronic ankle instability, which can cause persistent pain and lead to early osteoarthritis. This review will illustrate the anatomy of the syndesmotic ligamentous complex, describe radiographic, CT, and MR imaging of the syndesmosis, demonstrate typical mechanisms of injuries and associated fracture patterns, and provide an overview of important management considerations.

In this article, we review skeletal muscle strain injury with computational methods for strain injury analysis, prevention, and recovery. We first review the theory of muscle strain injury at both the microscopic and macroscopic levels. Next, we discuss simulation models, including kinematics, dynamics, and finite-element method. Finally, we introduce predictive approaches for muscle strain injury prevention. Topics including recovery, rehabilitation, muscle-tendon remodeling, and experimental methods are described. We also suggest areas for future research.

BACKGROUND: Many factors are thought to contribute to chronic ankle instability (CAI). Multiple systematic reviews have synthesised the available evidence to identify the primary contributing factors. However, readers are now faced with several systematic reviews that present conflicting findings.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to establish the statistical significance and effect size of primary factors contributing to CAI and to identify likely reasons for inconsistencies in the literature.
METHODS: Relevant health databases were searched: CINAHL, MEDLINE

Anterior inferior tibial fibular ligament tenderness to palpation, a positive squeeze test, and a positive external rotation test correlate well with syndesmosis instability after high ankle sprain. However, it is still unknown whether subtle unstable high ankle sprains (grade IIB) could heal satisfactorily with nonoperative treatment and whether their recovery would be prolonged compared with operative treatment.

Ankle sprains are among of the most common injuries seen in daily orthopaedic practice. Beside injuries of the lateral ligament, which is the most frequently injured single structure in the body of athletes, sprains can also affect the tibiofibular syndesmosis. These injuries are known as high ankle sprains. They can occur with or without a bony injury. In this report, we will discuss the high ankle sprain without any bony injury. These kinds of injuries are rare, but often associated with complications and are frequently misdiagnosed or undiagnosed. The purpose of this article is to provide a

In research on the role of reflexes in ankle sprains, most attention has traditionally gone toward perturbed standing and toward spindle afferents from the peroneal muscles. It is argued that other paradigms are needed that are more closely related to sports. In addition, the role of other afferents (e.g., from skin) and other muscles (from upper leg) should be considered.

An athlete often presents to the rehabilitation specialist with either a nonspecific referral, such as "hip pain," or with a diagnosis of a more specific hip pathology. The highly skilled clinician is trained to look at the "linkage" between the trunk and all parts of the lower extremity. Why is the hip not transferring the load well? Where is the breakdown? The gluteus medius, pelvic stability, and supportive muscular slings are of great importance when optimizing the function of the hip. The hip is subjected to forces equal to multiples of the body weight and requires osseous, articular and

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Postural stability has been shown to be impaired after a lateral ankle sprain (LAS) and after immersion cryotherapy in healthy ankles. This study was performed to determine the effects of cryotherapy on postural stability after LAS.
METHOD: A single-session, repeated measures design was used. Fifteen 18- to 29-year-old males (mean age 21.33 +/- 3.54, height 71.23 +/- 2.50 cm, mass 170.33 +/- 19.77 kg) with relatively recent grade I LAS volunteered. Medial-lateral postural sway variability was assessed during single-leg barefoot stance using a Bertec force platform. Swa
