The authors' experience of the selective deep lobe parotidectomy for the treatment of pleomorphic adenomas of the deep parotid lobe is presented. A retrospective analysis of 11 patients treated between 1997 and 2010 was performed; seven were males and four were females, ranging in age from 35 to 51 years. Parameters evaluated included facial nerve weakness, the occurrence of Frey's syndrome, cosmetic outcome, and recurrence. Follow-up ranged from 18 months to 11 years. No major complications, permanent facial nerve weakness, or Frey's syndrome occurred. Four patients developed temporary facial

Botulinum toxin could represent nowadays a new treatment modality especially for cutaneous conditions in course of which conventional treatments remain unsuccessful. Besides palmar and plantar hyperhidrosis, botulinum toxin has demonstrated efficacy in different conditions associated with hyperhidrosis, such as dyshidrosis, multiple eccrine hidrocystomas, hidradenitis suppurativa, Frey syndrome, but also in different conditions worsened by hyperhidrosis such as Hailey-Hailey disease, Darier disease, inversed psoriasis, aquagenic palmoplantar keratoderma, pachyonychia congenital. Botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) can be injected to achieve therapeutic benefit across a large range of clinical conditions. To assess the efficacy and safety of BoNT injections for the treatment of certain hypersecretory disorders, including hyperhidrosis, sialorrhea, and chronic rhinorrhea, an expert panel reviewed evidence from the published literature. Data sources included English-language studies identified via MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, Current Contents, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. Evidence tables generated in the 2008 Report of the Therapeutics and Technology Asses

Chronic sialadenitis (CS) of the parotid gland is an insidious inflammatory disorder which tends to progress and may lead to the formation of a fibrous mass. This is a review of the author's experience of superficial parotidectomy (SP) with duct ligation for non-specific CS of the parotid gland not responding to conservative management. 21 patients (11 females; 10 males) with intractable non specific CS underwent SP with duct ligation. The mean duration of symptoms was 1.93 years (SD 0.48). Fine needle aspiration cytology and magnetic resonance imaging were carried out prior to SP to rule out

OBJECTIVES: Surgery for benign parotid tumours is associated with potential sequelae which may significantly deteriorate patient's quality of life. Sometimes the pursuit of reducing the risk of these complications induces surgeon to limit the extent of the parotid gland removed with a tumour. This may lead to a decrease in tumour local control which is especially true for pleomorphic adenoma. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the incidence of complications after certain types of parotid surgery for primary pleomorphic adenomas and to analyse risk factors related to their occurrence.

We studied the incidence of Frey's syndrome and facial contour deformity in two groups of patients who had undergone superficial parotidectomy. One group was made up of 12 patients who were randomized to undergo reconstruction of the surgical defect with a sternocleidomastoid muscle flap; the other 12 patients did not receive a flap. All 24 patients were evaluated via a short questionnaire, the starch-iodine test, and a visual examination. On the questionnaire, none of the 24 patients said they experienced abnormal facial sweating, flushing, or warmth while eating, although 6 of the 12 patient

CONCLUSIONS: Advanced age, long operation time and large specimen volume were significant risk factors for transient facial palsy after conservative parotidectomy. Revision operation was the only risk factor for development of a permanent palsy. Risk factors for Frey's syndrome were not found. The incidence of Frey's syndrome was not altered by the use of a sternocleidomastoid muscle flap or other implantation material.
OBJECTIVES: The results of studies identifying risk factors for facial palsy and Frey's syndrome after parotidectomy are contradictory. This study attempted to identify these

BACKGROUND: Salivary gland tumors are an uncommon entity, comprising 3% to 6% of all head and neck tumors. Approximately 75% to 80% occur in the parotid gland, and 80% are benign. It is difficult to establish epidemiologic characteristics of parotid gland tumors due to their low incidence. We performed a retrospective study to analyze clinical diagnostic and therapeutic features of patients submitted to parotid gland surgery.
METHODS: A retrospective study was performed, regarding all the patients (n = 96) submitted to surgery for treatment of parotid gland disease in the Department of Plasti
