KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: In countries like Sudan, where several infectious diseases are prevalent, health care providers should not be satisfied with initial detection of a single pathogen and whenever it is feasible, they should investigate coinfections. Infections with high mortality or severe morbidity should be prioritized during the differential diagnosis particularly for diseases with similar clinical manifestations to reduce the death and disability rates. However, this requires substantial improvement in the diagnostic capacity.
ABSTRACT: Here we report a case of dengue and malaria coinf

<p>The Coronavirus-19 (COVID-19) hasn't seen the dawn since its emergence, however waxing and waning has resulted in the emergence of deadly variants. The effects of pandemic have not been limited to its virulence, but have rather conferred multiple collateral effects, especially in developing countries; thereby, designating it as a SYNDEMIC. The same culminated in neglect of non-COVID-19 conditions like tuberculosis (TB) and human immunodeficiency virus-acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS). Besides being the prognostic factor for severe COVID-19, these infections in hidden pockets se

The United States is experiencing a syndemic of homelessness, substance use disorder, and mental health conditions, which has been further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Although it is expected that mitigation strategies will curb community transmission of COVID-19, the unintended consequences of social isolation on mental health and substance use are a growing public health concern. Awareness of changing mental health and substance use treatment needs due to the pandemic is critical to understanding what additional services and support are needed during and post-pandemic, particularly

Climate change and HIV/AIDS represent two of the greatest threats to human health in the 21st century. However, limitations in understanding the complex relationship between these syndemics continue to constrain advancements in the prevention and management of HIV/AIDS in the context of a rapidly changing climate. Here, we present a conceptual framework that identifies four pathways linking climate change with HIV/AIDS transmission and health outcomes: increased food insecurity, increased prevalence of other infectious diseases, increased human migration, and erosion of public health infrastru

Young men of color who have sex with men (yMSM) living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in syndemic environments have been difficult-to-retain in care resulting in their being at-risk for poor health outcomes despite availability of effective once-daily antiretroviral treatment (ART). Multiple methods have been implemented to improve outcomes for this cohort; none with sustainable results. Outpatient HIV staff themselves may be a contributing factor. We introduced multidisciplinary staff to the concept of using a palliative approach early (ePA) in outpatient HIV care management to enabl

This article articulates a contextualized understanding of gender and ethnicity as interacting social determinants of HIV risk and acquisition, with special focus on African Americans and Hispanics/Latinos--2 ethnic groups currently at most risk for HIV/AIDS acquisition in the United States. First, sex and gender are defined. Second, a conceptual model of gender, ethnicity, and HIV risk and resilience is presented. Third, a historical backdrop of gender and ethnic disparities is provided, with attention to key moments in history when notions of the intersections between gender, ethnicity, and

The mental health of adolescents (10-19 years) remains an overlooked global health issue, particularly within the context of syndemic conditions such as HIV and pregnancy. Rates of pregnancy and HIV among adolescents within South Africa are some of the highest in the world. Experiencing pregnancy and living with HIV during adolescence have both been found to be associated with poor mental health within separate explorations. Yet, examinations of mental health among adolescents living with HIV who have experienced pregnancy/parenthood remain absent from the literature. As such, there exists no

INTRODUCTION: Depression remains a significant public health issue exacerbated by geopolitical uncertainty and socioeconomic vulnerability. We conducted this study to examine the prevalence of depressive symptoms, and explore the factors influencing mental healthcare access in Kashmir. METHODS: We conducted a mixed-methods study employing a sequential explanatory design (quant-QUAL). A preliminary cross-sectional survey of 420 adults sampled from Budgam district, Kashmir was conducted to assess depressive symptoms using the patient health questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). The qualitative phase followed

Herpes Simplex Virus types 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2) are prevalent STIs among men who have sex with men (MSM), yet remain underexamined in the U.S.. Data from the P18 cohort sub-study, P18 Viral (N = 520), were used to examine factors associated with HSV-1 and HSV-2 infection among a sample of young adult cisgender gay men. We aimed to assess (1) the seroprevalence rates of HSV-1 and HSV-2, and (2) sociodemographic, behavioral, and health-related correlates of infection. HSV-1 seroprevalence was three times higher than HSV-2. HSV-2 seropositivity was significantly associated with HIV-positive

BACKGROUND: Bisexual populations have higher prevalence of depression, anxiety, suicidality and substance use than heterosexuals, and often than gay men or lesbians. The co-occurrence of multiple outcomes has rarely been studied.
METHODS: Data were collected from 405 bisexuals using respondent-driven sampling. Weighted analyses were conducted for 387 with outcome data. Multiple outcomes were defined as 3 or more of: depression, anxiety, suicide ideation, problematic alcohol use, or polysubstance use.
RESULTS: Among bisexuals, 19.0 % had multiple outcomes. We did not find variation in raw fre

The increasingly unpredictable unregulated drug supply has intensified overdose morbidity and mortality and prompted growing interest in safer regulated supply as an upstream harm reduction strategy. Yet, safer supply programs cannot function effectively as stand-alone interventions. Their reach, acceptability, and equity will depend on surrounding infrastructure that supports people before enrollment, during transitions in substance use or dosing, and alongside ongoing use of unregulated substances. Harm reduction vending machines (HRVMs) are one low-barrier infrastructure model that can supp

BACKGROUND: TB continues to pose considerable threats to elderly populations worldwide. Drawing on the Global Burden of Disease 2021 dataset spanning 3 decades, this investigation explores how TB burden has shifted among Chinese seniors aged 60 and above.
METHODS: Standardized epidemiological metrics for incidence, prevalence, mortality, disability-adjusted life years, age-standardized rate and average annual percent change were calculated. Joinpoint regression analysis was applied to identify periods manifesting notable changes and an age-period-cohort framework was employed to estimate the

Sexualized Substance Use (SSU) refers to the use of substances to intensify sexual experiences, often involving substances such as methamphetamine, mephedrone, or GHB/GBL. Using a multifaceted syndemic approach, this cross-sectional study examined the prevalence of SSU among sex workers in Spain, their motivations, health risks such as sexually transmitted infections (STIs), substance related health consequences, and experiences of lifetime violence victimization. It also explored psychosocial factors, including recreational use, perceived sexual satisfaction, and social support, providing a m

Tuberculosis (TB) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) represent an extant local and global syndemic, with TB incidence rates in the UK end-stage renal failure population far surpassing those of the general population in endemic countries. Patients with CKD generally have latent TB reactivation, rather than de novo infection, which presents with atypical, non-pulmonary presentations leading to late diagnosis, poorer outcomes and a high risk of widespread transmission through haemodialysis units. There is therefore a need to consider latent TB infection screening in the CKD population. However, the

Gender-based violence (GBV) against transgender and nonbinary (TGNB) persons is a pervasive public health issue. GBV has been linked to mental health problems such as depression and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), as well has risk for HIV seroconversion and HIV treatment nonadherence. However, the impact of GBV on HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use among TGNB persons has yet to be investigated. In the current study we assessed longitudinal PrEP persistence data from dried blood spots (DBS) collected from 172 racially and ethnically diverse TGNB participants during a 48-week PrEP dem

The identification of subgroups of people living with HIV in China based on the severity of symptom clusters and individual symptoms is crucial to determine group-specific symptom management strategies. Participants reported 27 highly prevalent HIV/AIDS-related symptoms. Latent profile analysis based on symptom severity was used to identify person-centered subtypes of HIV/AIDS-related symptoms. Symptom networks were compared among subgroups identified by latent profile analysis. A total of 2927 eligible people living with HIV (PWH) were included in the analysis. Five profiles were identified:

Obesity and food and nutrition insecurity are increasingly understood as syndemic outcomes of enduring social inequalities. In Brazil, these conditions disproportionately affect Black women in socially vulnerable contexts, due to the intersection of gender, race/ethnicity, and low socioeconomic status. In response, Brazil has launched the new Intersectoral Strategy for Obesity Prevention, which frames obesity as a multidetermined condition shaped by social, economic, cultural, and environmental factors. Grounded in intersectionality and rights-based governance, the Strategy is structured aroun

: This editorial review covers current trends in the epidemiology of HIV among people who inject drugs (PWID) in the United States, including four recent HIV outbreaks. We discuss gaps in the prevention and treatment cascades for HIV and medications for opioid disorder and propose lessons learned to prevent future HIV outbreaks. Over the last decade, North America has been in the throes of a major opioid epidemic, due in part to over-prescribing of prescription opiates, followed by increasing availability of cheap heroin, synthetic opioids (e.g. fentanyl), and stimulants (e.g. methamphetamine)

There has been a rapid escalation of type 2 diabetes (T2D) in developing countries, with varied prevalence according to rural vs urban habitat and degree of urbanization. Some ethnic groups (eg, South Asians, other Asians, and Africans), develop diabetes a decade earlier and at a lower body mass index than Whites, have prominent abdominal obesity, and accelerated the conversion from prediabetes to diabetes. The burden of complications, both macro- and microvascular, is substantial, but also varies according to populations. The syndemics of diabetes with HIV or tuberculosis are prevalent in man

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV), HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STI) can contribute to disparities in population health, depending on the individual, social and environmental factors characterizing a setting. To better understand the place-based determinants and patterns of these key interrelated public health problems in Uganda, we compared risk factors for IPV, HIV and STI in fishing, trading and agrarian communities in Rakai, Uganda by gender.
METHOD: This study used cross-sectional data collected from 14,464 sexually active men (n = 6531) and women (n = 7933) as part
