Patient-specific effects on sonication heating efficiency during magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound thalamotomy.

PURPOSE: During magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) thalamotomy for refractory tremor, high temperatures must be achieved and sustained for tissue necrosis. We assessed the impact of both patient-specific as well as procedure-related factors on the efficiency of acoustic energy transfer, or heating efficiency (HE). METHODS: Retrospective analysis of 92 consecutive patients (857 sonications) with essential tremor or tremor-dominant Parkinson's disease treated at a single institution. Temperature elevations at the target were measured for each sonication with MR thermometry. H

Temperature homeostasis disruption and hypothalamic alterations in experimental drug-resistant epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: Elevated body temperature may increase seizure risk, yet the relationship between thermoregulation and seizures, as well as the underlying mechanisms, remains poorly understood. We investigated whether thermoregulatory control is altered in experimental temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), as such impairment could reduce the ability of affected individuals to adapt to environmental temperature changes. METHODS: Using an adult mouse model of temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), we longitudinally measured brain temperature before and after epilepsy onset using 7 T 1H-magnetic resonance spectroscop

Agreement of infrared ear temperature with nasopharyngeal temperature and diagnostic performance on hypothermia in general anesthetized patients.

BACKGROUND: Infrared ear thermometry is widely used in clinical practice due to its noninvasive, convenient, and quick sampling. However, its accuracy and feasibility in anesthetized patients have not yet been established. METHODS: We conducted this cross-sectional study to evaluate the agreement between infrared ear temperature and nasopharyngeal temperature in general anesthetized patients and its performance in intraoperative hypothermia, defined as nasopharyngeal temperature <36°C. Adult female patients who underwent gynecological surgery under general anesthesia were enrolled in this stu

Qing-Kai-Ling Injection Induces Immediate Hypersensitivity Reaction via the Activation of Anaphylatoxin C3.

Background and Objective: Qing-Kai-Ling (QKL) is derived from a famous ancient Chinese patent medicine Angong Niuhuang pills (ANP) which has been used across Asia, especially in China, for the treatment of "febrile disease," such as stroke, encephalitis and meningitis for hundreds of years. As an extract of ANP without heavy metal, the clinical applicability of QKL is more intensive, of which its injection is commonly used in acute and serious diseases. This study aims to clarify the potential mechanisms of immediate hypersensitivity reaction (IHR) induced by QKL injection (QKLI). Methods: β-h

Skin temperature side differences--a diagnostic tool for CRPS?

Complex regional pain syndrome type I (CRPS I) is a chronic painful disease of one extremity that may develop as a disproportionate consequence of a trauma affecting the limbs without overt nerve injury. It is clinically characterized by sensory, motor and autonomic symptoms including vascular abnormalities. Previously, we have reported that pathophysiological alterations of the ongoing sympathetic activity play a crucial role in vasomotor disturbances (Brain 124 (2001) 587). As a companion article, the aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic value of skin temperature side differences

Effects of intraoperative irradiation and intraoperative hyperthermia on canine sciatic nerve: neurologic and electrophysiologic study.

PURPOSE: Late radiation injury to peripheral nerve may be the limiting factor in the clinical application of intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT). The combination of IORT with intraoperative hyperthermia (IOHT) raises specific concerns regarding the effects on certain normal tissues such as peripheral nerve, which might be included in the treatment field. The objective of this study was to compare the effect of IORT alone to the effect of IORT combined with IOHT on peripheral nerve in normal beagle dogs. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Young adult beagle dogs were randomized into five groups of thr

Machine learning-enhanced temperature sensing of spectrally featureless fluorophores.

Current efforts in fluorescence-based optical thermometry have concentrated on probe optimization to minimize prediction errors, typically requiring fluorophores with multiple emission bands for ratiometric analysis or large emission peak shifts for reliable calibration. However, fluorophores exhibiting a single emission band with a modest peak shift - here termed spectrally featureless - are excluded from conventional thermometric approaches, as single-band intensity measurements are susceptible to excitation source fluctuations and photobleaching, while their peak shifts alone are insufficie

The dual-model up/down-conversion green luminescence of NaSrGd(MoO4)3: Er3+ and its application for temperature sensing.

Er3+-doped phosphors are widely used as dual-functional optical thermometers due to their distinctive up/down-conversion luminescence and the thermally coupled energy states (2H11/2 and 4S3/2) of Er3+. The development of high-performance Er3+-activated optical thermometers is both an intriguing subject and a formidable challenge in the field. This article investigates the up/down-conversion (UC and DC) photoluminescence properties of NaSrGd(MoO4)3 (NSGM): Er3+. When excited at 375 and 975 nm, the phosphors emit peaks at 530, 550, and 657 nm, corresponding to the 2H11/2, 4S3/2, and 4F9/2 → 4I15

An exploratory study of brain temperature and choline abnormalities in temporal lobe epilepsy patients with depressive symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: Epilepsy and depression share neurobiological origins, and evidence suggests a possible bidirectional relationship that remains poorly understood. This exploratory, cross-sectional study aimed to investigate this relationship by employing magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) and thermometry (MRSI-t) in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) with comorbid depressive symptoms and control participants. This is the first study to combine MRSI and MRSI-t to examine brain temperature and choline abnormalities in regions implicated in seizure onset and depression. METHODS:

Exploring Defect-Induced Emission in ZnAl2O4: An Exceptional Color-Tunable Phosphor Material with Diverse Lifetimes.

Activator-free zinc aluminate (ZA) nanophosphor was synthesized through a sol-gel combustion route, which can be used both as a blue-emitting phosphor material and a white-emitting phosphor material, depending on the annealing temperature during synthesis. The material also has the potential to be used in optical thermometry. These fascinating color-tunable emission characteristics can be linked with the various defect centers present inside the matrix and their changes upon thermal annealing. Various defect centers, such as anionic vacancy, cationic vacancy, antisite defect, etc., create diff

Evaluation of Pseudorandom Sonications for Reducing Cavitation With a Clinical Neurosurgery HIFU Device.

Transcranial high-intensity focused ultrasound is used in clinics for treating essential tremor (ET) and proposed for many other brain disorders. This promising treatment modality requires high energy resulting eventually in undesired cavitation and potential side effects. The goals of the present work were: 1) to evaluate the potential increase of the cavitation threshold using pseudorandom gated sonications and 2) to assess the heating capabilities with such sonications. The experiments were performed with the transcranial magnetic resonance (MR)-compatible ExAblate Neuro system (InSightec,

Improving necrosis estimation in MR-guided prostate focused ultrasound ablations with a probabilistic thermal dose model.

False positive necrosis classification close to ablation zones in magnetic resonance (MR)-guided transurethral ultrasound ablation of the prostate poses an issue for real-time assessment of the treatment. Typically, apriori knowledge about transducers is utilized to filter temperature maps, thereby reducing false positives. Our innovation, however, lies in the ability of our probabilistic CEM43 thermal dose model (pCEM43) to decrease false positives without the need for prior knowledge beyond the noise statistics estimated from baseline images. The original pCEM43 was modified improving statis

Clinical trial protocol for PanDox: a phase I study of targeted chemotherapy delivery to non-resectable primary pancreatic tumours using thermosensitive liposomal doxorubicin (ThermoDox®) and focused ultrasound.

BACKGROUND: The dense stroma of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas is a major barrier to drug delivery. To increase the local drug diffusion gradient, high doses of chemotherapeutic agent doxorubicin can be released from thermally-sensitive liposomes (ThermoDox®) using ultrasound-mediated hyperthermia at the tumour target. PanDox is designed as a Phase 1 single centre study to investigate enhancing drug delivery to adult patients with non-operable pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas. The study compares a single cycle of either conventional doxorubicin alone or ThermoDox® with focused ultrasound-i

Cadmium and manganese hypophosphite perovskites templated by formamidinium cations: dielectric, optical and magnetic properties.

The recently discovered hypophosphite perovskites are promising functional materials. This contribution is devoted to the structural, thermal, dielectric, Raman and optical studies of a new hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite, [FA]Cd(H2POO)3 (FA = formamidinium, NH2CHNH2+). We also report the thermal, magnetic, dielectric and optical properties of the known perovskite [FA]Mn(H2POO)3. [FA]Cd(H2POO)3 crystallizes in a monoclinic structure, with the space group C2/c, and transforms at 190 K to another monoclinic structure, with the space group P21/n. For both compounds, the FA+ is disordered thro
