Protection Efficacy of the Infectious Laryngotracheitis (ILT) Serva CEO Vaccine Strain in Broiler Chickens Under Different Vaccination Coverage Conditions.

Mass vaccination against infectious laryngotracheitis virus (ILTV) in drinking water can result in variable initial vaccine take. Partial initial vaccine coverage of 20% with an Australian ILT vaccine (A20) previously resulted in significant protection against virulent ILTV challenge. This follow-up study used the international Serva ILT vaccine strain in a factorial design testing four levels of vaccination coverage (0%, 10%, 20%, or 100% of chicks eye-drop vaccinated with the live vaccine at 7 days of age) and three levels of ILTV challenge (no challenge or challenge at 7 or 21 days postvacc

Evaluation of vaccination against infectious laryngotracheitis (ILT) with recombinant herpesvirus of turkey (rHVT-LT) and chicken embryo origin (CEO) vaccines applied alone or in combination.

The chicken embryo origin (CEO) infectious laryngotracheitis (ILT) live attenuated vaccines, although capable of protecting against disease and reducing challenge virus replication, can regain virulence. Recombinant ILT vaccines do not regain virulence but are partially successful at blocking challenge virus replication. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of rHVT-LT vaccination on CEO replication and how this vaccination strategy enhances protection and limits challenge virus transmission to naïve contact chickens. The rHVT-LT vaccine was administered at 1 day of age subcut

[The state of the larynx in children following repeated and recurrent croup].

The obstructive forms of laryngitis and/or laryngotracheitis are the emergency conditions in the pediatric practice that frequently necessitate hospitalization of the affected patients. According to R.J. Rosychuk and co-workers, such patients make up to 6% of the total number of children admitted to stationary clinics. The authors discuss the problem of recurrent catarrhal croup in the children and its differential diagnosis from other diseases. The results of endoscopic and virological examination of the children with repeated or recurring croup are discussed. The children of this group most

Necrotizing tracheobronchitis with progressive airflow obstruction associated with paraneoplastic pemphigus.

Paraneoplastic pemphigus (PNP) is an autoimmune disease associated with leukemia and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. A patient with stage IVB poorly differentiated lymphocytic lymphoma developed characteristic upper and lower airway involvement with profound mucocutaneous erosion and tracheobronchial epithelial desquamation. Immunofluorescence testing confirmed autoantibody deposition along the basement membrane of bronchial epithelium. Disruption of the cellular adhesion mechanisms, including desmosomes, hemidesmosomes, and possibly the integrin subunits, is presumed to have led to disruption and des

Surgical complications of bedside tracheotomy in an otolaryngology residency program.

A prospective analysis of 124 consecutive adult patients undergoing tracheotomy was performed to examine the incidence of resulting complications. All tracheotomies were performed by a junior otolaryngology resident under the supervision of a member of the attending staff or a chief resident. The vast majority were performed at the bedside in an intensive care unit. The complications were divided into two groups: early (within 2 days) and late (2 to 14 days). Seven patients had complications directly related to tracheotomy. Four of these complications occurred in three patients and were consid

Pneumonia and acute febrile tracheobronchitis due to haemophilus influenzae.

Of 30 patients with pneumonia due to Haemophilus influenzae, 26 had infection due to nontypable and 4 due to typable organisms. Biotype I isolates were implicated with surprising frequency. Blood cultures were positive in six patients. An additional 14 patients, all with nontypable H. influenzae infection, had febrile purulent tracheobronchitis that was clinically indistinguishable from pneumonia except for the absence of a radiographic infiltrate; none were bacteremic. Penicillin susceptibility was shown for 95% of isolates, and response to ampicillin was prompt. Patients had high serum level

[Role of parainfluenza varuses in etiology of acute respiratory infections in children (serological diagnosis)].

Serologic investigations carried out in 254 children admitted to a Clinic for Children for respiratory diseases, established a diagnosis of infection with parainfluenza virus in 19.2% of cases. The predominant age-group affected was 7--12 months and 0--6 months; the causative agent in most cases was parainfluenza type 3, followed by type 2 and then type 1. The role of parainfluenza viruses in the aetiology of laryngotracheobronchiectasis was confirmed, as well as their participation in the aetiology of pneumonia in infants. The results also showed the wide circulation of parainfluenza viruses

First Report of Low Pathogenic Avian Influenza Subtype H9N2 in African Houbara Bustards (Chlamydotis undulata undulata) and Gamebirds in Morocco: Clinico-Pathological Findings, Molecular Characterization, and Associated Coinfections.

We report in this paper the first detection of low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) subtype H9N2 in houbara bustards and in gamebirds in Morocco. Starting in 2019, an increase in mortality rates related to respiratory distress was recorded in these species. Necropsy of the specimens revealed fibrinous sinusitis and tracheitis with intra-bronchial fibrin casts, which are consistent with H9N2 infection in chickens; therefore, implication of the virus in these outbreaks was strongly suspected. Consequently, between January 2020 and June 2023, birds with respiratory signs were necropsied for path

The devil is in the details-Host disease and co-infections are associated with zoonotic pathogen carriage in Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus).

Traditionally, zoonotic pathogen ecology studies in wildlife have focused on the interplay among hosts, their demographic characteristics and their pathogens. But pathogen ecology is also influenced by factors that traverse the hierarchical scale of biological organization, ranging from within-host factors at the molecular, cellular and organ levels, all the way to the host population within a larger environment. The influence of host disease and co-infections on zoonotic pathogen carriage in hosts is important because these factors may be key to a more holistic understanding of pathogen ecolo
