BACKGROUND: The bite of Triatominae can cause cutaneous allergic reactions and even anaphylaxis. Since the early 1980s, no population-based surveys have been done in Southern California, and none was ever carried out in inland Los Angeles or Riverside Counties.
OBJECTIVES: To measure the frequency of insect sightings, bites and allergic reactions in a suburban area of eastern Los Angeles County and along with rural and urban sites in Riverside County.
METHODS: A door-to-door survey was done in triatomine exposed and unexposed areas. Logistic regression modeling was used for the analysis, and

American trypanosomiasis is one of the few native parasites of this continent. As a zoonosis, Trypanosoma cruzi infects about 180 species out of 25 families of mammals. Its regular transmission is through triatomines, which can easily transmit parasites either by the skin route (contamination of mammals skin with their feces) or by oral route (ingestion of food contaminated with complete triatomines or their feces) and additionally through haematogenous via (congenital and transfusional) and by tissues (transplants). The oral route, which seems to be the ancestral form of transmission to wild

A high proportion of triatomine insects, vectors for Trypanosoma cruzi trypanosomes, collected in Arizona and California and examined using a novel assay had fed on humans. Other triatomine insects were positive for T. cruzi parasite infection, which indicates that the potential exists for vector transmission of Chagas disease in the United States.

The participation of nitric oxide (NO) in the control of blood parasitemia and parasitism during the acute phase of infection in dogs inoculated with blood trypomastigotes (BT) or metacyclic trypomastigotes (MT group) of Berenice-78 Trypanosoma cruzi strain has been evaluated. Animals of the MT group (n=4) presented increased levels of serum NO throughout the infection when compared with the BT (n=4) or control (n=4) groups, and a delay in parasitemia peak compared with the BT group. In spleen fragments, tissue parasitism was not observed but the MT group presented larger areas associated with

The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of Chagas disease vector control in Chile, using human disease as an index. After a twelve years control program using insecticides, dwelling infection in the IV region fell from 49 to 4%. In Combarbalá (a community of the IV region) the infection rate, detected by indirect hemagglutination, immunofluorescence and ELISA tests, decreased from 21.8% in 1986 to 8.2% in 1992 in primary school students (p < 0.001) and from 7.5 to 5% in high school students. Besides the vector control program, no other important epidemiological changes occurred in thi

Millions of arthropods surround us every day, but only a few are medically harmful. Knowledge of the habits and habitats of known venomous arthropods is certainly advisable for the prudent person in areas of known infestation as a preventive measure. Arthropod envenomations probably produce much less mortality than previously thought, but the potential for severe effects of direct envenomation or allergic response exists with some species, and these events must be approached as true medical emergencies.

In Latin America, synanthropic mammalian reservoirs maintain Trypanosoma cruzi, a parasitic protozoan, where they facilitate the transmission of the parasite to humans and other reservoir hosts in peridomestic settings. In the United States, raccoons (Procyon lotor) and Virginia opossums (Didelphis virginiana) are known synanthropic T. cruzi reservoir hosts; however, the role these species have in the peridomestic transmission cycle in the US is not well understood. This study aimed to identify the suite of mammalian reservoirs of T. cruzi in Florida. We also compared infection prevalence in r

BACKGROUND: Chagas disease, a vector-borne disease transmitted by triatomine bugs and caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, affects millions of people in the Americas. In Arequipa, Peru, indoor residual insecticide spraying campaigns are routinely conducted to eliminate Triatoma infestans, the only vector in this area. Following insecticide spraying, there is risk of vector return and reinitiation of parasite transmission. Dogs are important reservoirs of T. cruzi and may play a role in reinitiating transmission in previously sprayed areas. Dogs may also serve as indicators of reemerging t

BACKGROUND: Chagas disease was originally reported in Panama in 1931. Currently, the best knowledge of this zoonosis is restricted to studies done in historically endemic regions. However, little is known about the distribution and epidemiology of Chagas disease in other rural areas of the country.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out between May 2005 - July 2008 in four rural communities of the Santa Fe District, Veraguas Province. The study included an entomologic search to collect triatomines, bloodmeal type identification and infection rate with trypan

In 2006, Nabity et al. reported on an atypical presentation of Trypanosoma cruzi (T. cruzi) infection in an 8-month old English Mastiff from central Texas. Clinical signs and laboratory findings included lymphadenopathy, weight loss, amastigotes in lymph node aspirates, and initial serological results suggestive of either T. cruzi or Leishmania infection. Given the poor prognosis, the dog was euthanized and subsequent testing and culture of parasites from a lymph node revealed T. cruzi infection. Because different parasite discrete typing units (DTUs) are potentially associated with different

American trypanosamiasis occurs in nature as a sylvatic cycle, where Trypanosoma cruzi interacts with wild triatomines and mammalian reservoirs, such as marsupials, rodents, armadillos and other animals. Due to difficulties in trying to isolate T. cruzi stocks from the sylvatic cycle, very few studies have been performed in order to understand the parasite infection in natural environments. Traditionally T. cruzi has been considered to be composed of a highly heterogeneous population of parasites. In contrast, the mini-exon and the 24S alpha rRNA gene loci have shown that T. cruzi stocks can b

More than 110 years has passed since the first publications on Chagas disease, and it still urges the necessity of understanding it as a complex socioenvironmental issue in which components of diverse nature converge and interact beyond the biomedical and epidemiological aspects. The current scenarios of the issue, both rural and Latin American as urban and global, demand that the education on Chagas disease include all possible contexts: where there are insect vectors and where there are not; inside and outside Latin America; in rural, periurban, and urban areas; in formal and non-formal educ

Rational drug design creates innovative therapeutics based on knowledge of the biological target to provide more effective and responsible therapeutics. Chagas disease, endemic throughout Latin America, is caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, a protozoan parasite. Current therapeutics are problematic with widespread calls for new approaches. Researchers are using rational drug design for Chagas disease and one target receiving considerable attention is the T. cruzi trans-sialidase protein (TcTS). In T. cruzi, trans-sialidase catalyzes the transfer of sialic acid from a mammalian host to coat the paras

Blood samples from 172 individuals from northeastern Brazil were subjected to PCR amplification of Trypanosoma cruzi-specific kDNA sequences. This method enabled us to detect parasite DNA in 21 of 47 patients that were serologically positive. In addition, 1 patient that gave doubtful results with chagasic serology was confirmed as positive by PCR. We applied the same PCR detection method to the feces of wild triatomines captured in the same region, obtaining three positive results that were confirmed by microscopic examination. The 25 amplified products obtained in this study were then reampli

In order to determine the efficiency of different foods and water to maintain the infectivity of T. cruzi, the percentage of animals that resulted infected when they were ingested was registered. The materials were contaminated with metacyclic trypomastigotes from triatomine bugs feces, the infection in the mice were registered by directed observation of the parasite in the blood and corroborate by xenodiagnosis. Pasteurized milk infected the highest number of mice and the infectivity lasted longer than any other item tested. The efficacy of infectivity of fresh cheese and rice lasted after th

Species Distribution Modelling (SDM) determines habitat suitability of a species across geographic areas using macro-climatic variables; however, micro-habitats can buffer or exacerbate the influence of macro-climatic variables, requiring links between physiology and species persistence. Experimental approaches linking species physiology to micro-climate are complex, time consuming and expensive. E.g., what combination of exposure time and temperature is important for a species thermal tolerance is difficult to judge a priori. We tackled this problem using an active learning approach that util

In 1981, Kenyan authorities attempted eradication of tsetse (Glossina pallidipes) from the Lambwe valley, by sequential aerial spraying of endosulfan. Fly populations were reduced by over 99.9% in the main habitats, but recovered to their original levels within one year. In 1986, an Argentine research team attempted local elimination of domestic Triatominae (Triatoma infestans) in an area of Santiago del Estero. House infestation rates were reduced to an apparent zero, but recovered to pre-control levels in two years. In Sri Lanka, a combination of mosquito control with active case detection a

We review the epidemiological role of domestic and commensal hosts of Trypanosoma cruzi using a quantitative approach, and compiled >400 reports on their natural infection. We link the theory underlying simple mathematical models of vector-borne parasite transmission to the types of evidence used for reservoir host identification: mean duration of infectious life; host infection and infectiousness; and host-vector contact. The infectiousness of dogs or cats most frequently exceeded that of humans. The host-feeding patterns of major vectors showed wide variability among and within triatomine sp

Trialysin is a pore-forming protein found in the saliva of Triatoma infestans (Hemiptera, Reduviidae), the insect vector of Chagas' disease. The protein is active against a broad range of cell types from bacteria to eukaryotic cells. Recognizing that the N-terminus of trialysin harbors the lytic motif [Amino, R., Martins, R.
