Verbal memory impairment in congestive heart failure.

Cognitive dysfunction, mainly memory impairment, characterizes congestive heart failure (CHF). Aim of this study was to verify whether: (1) CHF has differential effects on primary and secondary memory; (2) memory dysfunction can be diagnosed by a screening instrument. In a multicenter study we enrolled 369 patients with stable CHF who underwent a structured assessment of verbal memory mechanisms and selected cognitive functions. Performance on some verbal memory indexes (Recency, Rey's immediate and delayed recall, Learning efficiency) progressively decreased from II to IV New York Heart Assoc

Verbal memory impairments predict social connection via anhedonia: a transdiagnostic, population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Anhedonia and verbal memory impairments are transdiagnostic features of psychopathology, contributing to poorer clinical and functional outcomes. Verbal memory supports the simulation of future events critical for anticipatory pleasure and motivation, suggesting impairments may increase anhedonia, and poorer outcomes, such as social isolation. Work from our group found that negative symptoms, including anhedonia, mediate the relation between verbal memory and social-occupational functioning in early psychosis. This study tested whether a similar pathway linking verbal memory, anhed

Weaker semantic language lateralization associated with better semantic language performance in healthy right-handed children.

INTRODUCTION: The relationship between language abilities and language lateralization in the developing brain is important for our understanding of the neural architecture of language development. METHODS: We investigated 35 right-handed children and adolescents aged 7-16 years with a functional magnetic resonance imaging language paradigm and a comprehensive language and verbal memory examination. RESULTS: We found that less lateralized language was significantly correlated with better language performance across areas of the brain and across different language tasks. Less lateralized langu

Chronic temporal lobe epilepsy: a neurodevelopmental or progressively dementing disease?

To what degree does the so-called 'initial hit' of the brain versus chronic epilepsy contribute towards the memory impairment observed in chronic temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) patients? We examined cross-sectional comparisons of age-related regressions of verbal learning and memory in 1156 patients with chronic TLE (age range 6-68 years, mean epilepsy onset 14 +/- 11 years) versus 1000 healthy control subjects (age range 6-80 years) and tested the hypothesis that deviations of age regressions (i.e. slowed rise, accelerated decline) will reveal critical phases during which epilepsy interferes wi…

Perinatal Mother-to-Child Chikungunya Virus Infection: Screening of Cognitive and Learning Difficulties in a Follow-Up Study of the Chimere Cohort on Reunion Island.

In this cohort study, we evaluated the cognitive and learning difficulties of school-age children perinatally infected with Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) on Reunion Island using the Evaluation of Cognitive Functions and Learning in Children (EDA) battery screening test compared to the healthy children cohort used for EDA development. Of the 19 infected children, 11 (57.9%) exhibited subnormal or abnormal scores, of whom 3 were classified as high risk, and 8 were classified as at risk for cognitive and learning difficulties. Children who had encephalopathy were at higher risk for displaying at leas

How do individuals with Williams syndrome learn a route in a real-world environment?

Individuals with Williams syndrome (WS) show a specific deficit in visuo-spatial abilities. This finding, however, derives mainly from performance on small-scale laboratory-based tasks. This study investigated large-scale route learning in individuals with WS and two matched control groups (moderate learning difficulty group [MLD], typically developing group [TD]). In a non-labelling and a labelling (verbal information provided along the route) condition, participants were guided along one of two unfamiliar 1-km routes with 20 junctions, and then retraced the route themselves (two trials). The

Memory for words and drawings in children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy.

A list-learning paradigm was used to study learning and memory of verbal and figurative material in children with right versus left-sided hemiplegic cerebral palsy. Thirty-one children with right (n = 18), or left (n = 13) congenital hemiplegia were compared with normal controls (n = 19). All children had normal intelligence (IQ > 80), and were attending standard schools. The inclusion criteria for the two hemiplegic groups were; no epilepsy, no hearing or visual impairments, and a mild to moderate hemiparesis. The aim of this study was to explore material-specific (words and drawings) differe

Positive Peer Groups Support Preschoolers' Word Learning.

Children learn language from their social partners, and differences in the behavior of these social partners can influence language learning outcomes. The literature largely focuses on adult caregivers; however, there is less clarity regarding the extent to which the social behavior of peers might also impact children's language learning. Children spend a large proportion of their time with peers once they enter preschool; peers are thus an important source of input for learning. Moreover, preschoolers are not just interacting with individual peers but also with groups of peers. To explore the

Training word learning in toddlers: Translation equivalents are more challenging to learn than native language words and facilitate working memory growth.

The present study aimed to determine whether teaching translation equivalents to monolingual toddlers would lead to a greater increase in executive functioning than if taught words in their native language. Children completed a 12-week training program during which nine novel words were taught weekly in children's native language (control group) or in a second language (experimental group). The participants' executive functioning was compared both pre- and post-intervention using the Early Executive Functions Questionnaire. Results suggest that learning translation equivalents is more difficul

The Advantages of Retrieval-Based and Spaced Practice: Implications for Word Learning in Clinical and Educational Contexts.

Purpose Researchers in the cognitive sciences have identified several key training strategies that support good encoding and retention of target information. These strategies are retrieval-based practice, also known as learning through testing, and spaced practice. The recent resurgence of research on retrieval-based and spaced practice has been extended to investigate the effectiveness of these strategies to support learning in individuals with language disorders. The purpose of the current article is to review key principles of retrieval-based and spaced practice that can be used to support

Developmental language learning impairments.

Developmental language learning impairments (LLI) are one of the most prevalent of all developmental disabilities, can occur in children for a wide variety of reasons, and have been shown to co-occur frequently with other developmental social, emotional and behavioral disorders, as well as with academic achievement problems. Research pertaining to developmental LLI of unknown origin, with an emphasis on the continuum between oral and written language impairment, is the focus of this review. Given the complexity of language learning, research has focused on multiple levels of analysis, includin

Severe childhood sexual abuse and nonverbal learning disability.

This article offers a review of, and case report on, the treatment of a young adult with a history of severe childhood abuse, dissociative symptoms, and right-hemisphere dysfunction, or nonverbal learning disabilities (NLD). The core of nonverbal learning disabilities is the inability to synthesize information and create meaning from complex information. Learning is a form of adaptation and disruptions in an individual's meaning-making process. There are major implications for the person's overall adjustment. Trauma is itself complex and often damaging to the survivor's well being. Clinical as…

Is it true that the differences in reading performance between students with and without LD cannot be explained by IQ?

This study was designed to demonstrate whether the differences in reading between students with learning disabilities (LD) and non-learning disabled students (NLD) can be explained by IQ. A sample of 133 Spanish children (85 male, 48 female) ranging in age from 8 to 13 years were classified into four groups according to IQ as measured by the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised (< 80; 81-90; 91-109: 110-140) and into two groups based on reading level (LD and NLD). A lexical decision task was used and we manipulated different word parameters (length, positional syllabic frequency, a
