Ophthalmic screening of school children in Ankara.

Ophthalmic screening was done on 23,810 children visited at schools in different regions of Ankara. Children with below normal visual acuity were invited to the outpatient department and had a full routine ocular examination. Thirty-nine nursery and primary schools were selected, ten of them private, eleven average state schools, seven good state schools and eleven village schools. Among the 23,810 children, 3095 (13%) had various pathology; 1516 were girls, 1579 boys. Refractive errors were found in 85% of the children (2630). This equals 11% of the total screened population. Refractive error

Vision examination of children in Riyadh's handicapped children house.

Fifty-eight children with neuromuscular handicap participating in a habilitation program at Riyadh, Saudi Arabia underwent an abbreviated vision examination evaluating their visual status. Manpower, time, language and equipment constraints prevented the performance of routine, complete eye examinations for each child. This initial effort was designed to assess the subjects' vision as well as examination time, space, manpower, and any other unforeseen problems in treating this population. This vision evaluation showed that 63.7 percent had ocular findings, and only 17.2 percent had a history of

Trunk-rotation and posture-screening markers in relation to refractive anisometropia among schoolchildren in Nantong, China: a cross-sectional school health surveillance study.

BACKGROUND: School health programmes often collect vision, growth and posture-screening data in the same children, but these streams are usually analysed separately. We examined whether trunk-rotation and posture-screening markers were associated with refractive anisometropia burden in school surveillance. METHODS: This cross-sectional analysis used 2025 school health surveillance records from Nantong, China. The primary outcome was non-cycloplegic screening-defined refractive anisometropia, defined as an interocular spherical-equivalent difference of 1.00 dioptre (D) or greater. Primary post

Strategies for cataract and uncorrected refractive error case finding in India: Costs and cost-effectiveness at scale.

BACKGROUND: India has the largest number of individuals suffering from visual impairment and blindness in the world. Recent surveys indicate that demand-based factors prevent more than 80% of people from seeking appropriate eye services, suggesting the need to scale up cost-effective case finding strategies. We assessed total costs and cost-effectiveness of multiple strategies to identify and encourage people to initiate corrective eye services. METHODS: Using administrative and financial data from six Indian eye health providers, we conduct a retrospective micro-costing analysis of five case

The Use of the RETeval Portable Electroretinography Device for Low-Cost Screening: A Mini-Review.

Electroretinography (ERG) provides crucial insights into retinal function and the integrity of the visual pathways. However, ERG assessments classically require a complicated technical background with costly equipment. In addition, the placement of corneal or conjunctival electrodes is not always tolerated by the patients, which restricts the measurement for pediatric evaluations. In this short review, we give an overview of the use of the RETeval portable ERG device (LKC Technologies, Inc., Gaithersburg, MD, USA), a modern portable ERG device that can facilitate screening for diseases involvi

[Update on recommendations for screening for hydroxychloroquine retinopathy].

INTRODUCTION: Recommendations for screening for chloroquine (CQ) and hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) retinopathy have recently been changed by the American Academy of Ophthalmology, taking into account new published data on toxicity prevalence, risk factors, location of onset in the retina and the efficacy of screening tests. METHODS: Literature review. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The risk of developing CQ or HCQ retinopathy depends on the daily dose and duration of treatment. At recommended doses, the risk is<1 % at 5 years, <2 % at 10years but increases to about 20 % after 20years of treatment. The m
