In a mouse colony in which lymphocytic choriomeningitis is endemic infection takes place either in utero or shortly after birth. Virus is discharged from infected mice with the nasal secretions and urine. In some mice the infection lasts for several months, and such carriers can transmit the disease to healthy mice by contact. The portal of entry appears to be the nasal mucosa rather than the gastrointestinal tract. Mice infected by contact show no definite symptoms while those infected in utero often do. The disease has persisted in the colony for at least 15 months without change in its char

Early childhood development is scaffolded by rapid maturation of brain white matter structure, believed to support the emergence of cognitive and socioemotional functions. Previous whole-tract studies have suggested patterns of white matter development occurring along posterior-anterior, deep-superficial, and inferior-superior axes. However, these have largely been cross-sectional and employed nonspecific metrics of white matter organization. Using longitudinal diffusion imaging data from 133 children (4 to 8 years; 76 females), the present work characterizes along-tract patterns of white matt

White matter hyperintensities (WMH) are an MRI-based biomarker associated with aging, Alzheimer's disease, and vascular dementia. Although the volume of WMH typically increases over time (growth) for individuals, WMH volume in some cases can also decrease (regress). This suggests the presence of active brain injury recovery mechanisms. Whether WMH regression reflects a true biological phenomenon or results from imaging artifacts or measurement errors, however, remains controversial. Here, we review published reports, following PRISMA search guidelines, describing or referring to WMH regression

Inherited white matter disorders (IWMDs) are a phenotypically and genotypically heterogeneous group of disorders affecting the central nervous system (CNS) with or without peripheral neuropathy. They are classified either as leukodystrophies (LDs), with primary glial abnormalities, or genetic leukoencephalopathies (gLEs), where other CNS cells are involved. As a group, these disorders are common, with an incidence of 1 in 7500 births. However, IWMDs often go undiagnosed or suffer delayed or misdiagnosis due to their heterogeneous presentation. Many of these disorders present with lethal second

INTRODUCTION: Leukodystrophies are a group of developmental disorders of the white matter in the central nervous system. Their differential diagnosis is very broad, and as such information from neuroimaging can be very useful. We present the case of an infant diagnosed with leukoencephalopathy with vanishing white matter following neurological regression.
CASE REPORT: A 7-month-old male infant with no relevant history was admitted to a tertiary hospital as a result of vomiting, refusing food, and neurological symptoms. The episode was diagnosed as subacute rhombencephalitis based on the clini

Hypomyelinating leukodystrophies are a subset of genetic white matter diseases characterized by insufficient myelin deposition during development. MRI patterns are used to identify hypomyelinating disorders, and genetic testing is used to determine the causal genes implicated in individual disease forms. Clinical course can range from severe, with patients manifesting neurologic symptoms in infancy or early childhood, to mild, with onset in adolescence or adulthood. This chapter discusses the most common hypomyelinating leukodystrophies, including X-linked Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease and othe

Although preliminary neuroimaging research suggests that patients with hoarding disorder (HD) show widespread abnormal task-related activity in the brain, there has been no research on alterations in the white matter tracts in these patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the characteristics of the major white matter tracts in patients with HD. Tract-based spatial statistics were used to search for white matter tract abnormalities throughout the brain in 25 patients with HD and 36 healthy controls. Post hoc analysis of regions of interest was performed to detect correlations with cl

The diagnostic value of white matter hyperintensities (WMH) in different types of migraineare unknown. To evaluate the WMH pattern of different subtypes in migraine patients with no vascular risk factors. 92 migraine patients (73 females, mean age 34.6 ± 8.9; 61 episodic migraine, 31 chronic migraine, 36 migraine with aura, 56 migraine without aura) without vascular risk factors underwent brain MRI (3 T). We also included a matched healthy control group with no migraine (n = 24). The prevalence of WMH in different types of migraine was similar and ranged from 38.7 to 44.4%; the control group s

Monophosphorus compounds are of enormous industrial importance due to the crucial roles they play in applications such as pharmaceuticals, photoinitiators and ligands for catalysis, among many others. White phosphorus (P4) is the key starting material for the preparation of all such chemicals. However, current production depends on indirect and inefficient, multi-step procedures. Here, we report a simple, effective 'one-pot' synthesis of a wide range of organic and inorganic monophosphorus species directly from P4. Reduction of P4 using tri-n-butyltin hydride and subsequent treatment with vari

The white dot syndromes include a group of diseases which are characterized by multiple yellowish-white foci in the outer retina, retinal pigment epithelium, and choroid. For clinicians and researchers alike they present significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. White dot syndromes include primary inflammatory choriocapillaropathies, such as acute posterior multifocal placoid pigment epitheliopathy (APMPPE)/acute multifocal ischemic choriocapillaropathy (AMIC), multiple evanescent white dot syndrome (MEWDS)/acute idiopathic blind spot enlargement (AIBSE), multifocal choroiditis (MFC),

INTRODUCTION: Acute leukemias are a heterogeneous group of hematological malignancies (blood cancers) that are rapidly life-threatening in the absence of treatment. They constitute a diagnostic and therapeutic emergency. Ocular manifestations are more frequent but less revealing of the disease, most often as a result of tumor invasion from the central nervous system .Other manifestations are secondary to bone marrow failure.
OBSERVATION: We report the case of a 17-year-old patient without any medical history hospitalized for pulmonary infection presenting a brutal and bilateral reduced vision

Biophysical modeling lies at the core of evaluating tissue cellular structure using diffusion-weighted MRI, albeit with shortcomings. The challenges lie not only in the complexity of the diffusion phenomenon, but also in the need to know the diffusion-specific properties of diverse cellular compartments in vivo. The likelihood function obtained from the commonly acquired Stejskal-Tanner diffusion-weighted MRI data is degenerate with different parameter constellations explaining the signal equally well, thereby hindering an unambiguous parameter estimation. The aim of this study is to measure t

BACKGROUND: While anatomical variations in the cardiac circulation are quite commonly encountered, isolated congenital coronary artery anomalies are rare. These conditions are only reported in 1% of patients who underwent coronary angiogram and 0.3% of patients at autopsy.
CASE PRESENTATION: This is the case of a 65-year-old female who presented with a 20-day history of postexertion chest tightness and shortness of breath. Coronary computed tomography exam revealed an anomalous left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery. With surgical intervention, the patient fully recovered.
CONCLUSION

AIM: This mini review explored the prevalence of white-coat hypertension (WCH), which is very common in children. It results in elevated office blood pressure (BP) but normal ambulatory BP monitoring (ABPM) readings.
METHODS: WCH can only be identified by analysing and comparing office BP readings and ABPM, which periodically records BP every 20-30 minutes over 24-hour period. This study provides initially the background for WCH in adults, together with a comprehensive overview of the most relevant paediatric data on WCH.
RESULTS: Accurate measurements of BP are very important for the diagno

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: We previously showed that global brain white matter hyperintensity volume (WMHV) was associated with accelerated long-term functional decline. The objective of the current study was to determine whether WMHV in particular brain regions is more predictive of functional decline.
DESIGN: Prospective population-based study.
SETTING: Northern Manhattan magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) study.
PARTICIPANTS: Individuals free of stroke at baseline (N = 1,195; mean age 71 ± 9; n = 460 (39%) male).
MEASUREMENTS: Participants had brain MRI with axial T1, T2, and fluid attenuated

BACKGROUND: Women who have had pre-eclampsia in their previous pregnancies demonstrate a greater prevalence of cerebral white matter lesions several years after the pregnancy than women who have been normotensive during their pregnancy. Both the pathophysiology and the timing of development of these lesions are uncertain. White matter lesions, in the general population, are associated with an increased risk of stroke, dementia and death.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The objective of the study was to determine the prevalence of cerebral white matter lesions amongst women with severe pre-eclampsia at d
