Neurocognitive Functions in Patients with Comorbid Hepatitis C and Opioid Dependence: A Comparative Study.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is commonly comorbid with opioid dependence (OD). We wanted to compare the neurocognitive functions of OD subjects with or without HCV [HCV (+), HCV (-)] and healthy controls (HC). METHODS: We recruited 40 adult subjects (age 18-55 years) in each group. HCV(+) group had a detectable viral load. Subjects with HIV or hepatitis B infection, head injury, epilepsy, or comorbid mental illness were excluded. We administered Standard Progressive Matrices (SPM), Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, Iowa Gambling Task (IGT), trail-making tests A and B, and verbal a

Different forms of prefrontal theta burst stimulation for executive function of medication- resistant depression: Evidence from a randomized sham-controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Even during symptomatic remission, many patients with medication resistant depression (MRD) still demonstrate impaired cognitive function, especially executive function (EF). Theta-burst transcranial magnetic stimulation (TBS) modulates cortical excitability and may treat MRD. Evidences from previous studies show that intermittent TBS (iTBS) produces cortical excitatory effects, while continuous TBS (cTBS) produces a reduction of cortical excitability. EF is highly dependent on prefrontal activity, but the effects of different forms of prefrontal TBS on EF remain unknown. METHODS:

Abnormal frontal theta oscillations underlie the cognitive flexibility deficits in children with high-functioning autism spectrum disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Deficits in cognitive flexibility have been suggested to underlie the repetitive and stereotyped behavior in individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Because cognitive flexibility is primarily mediated by the frontal lobe, where structural and functional abnormalities have been extensively found in these individuals, it is conceivable that their deficits in cognitive flexibility are related to abnormal activations of the frontal lobe. The present study investigates cognitive flexibility and its underlying neurophysiological activities as indicated by theta oscillations in c

[Ischemic cortical neuronal damage and cognitive impairments in atherosclerotic occlusive disease of the major cerebral artery: a PET study].

In atherosclerotic internal carotid artery (ICA) or middle cerebral artery (MCA) disease, selective neuronal damage can be detected as a decrease in central benzodiazepine receptors (BZRs) in an apparently normal cerebral cortex. To investigate the association between cortical BZRs decreases and executive dysfunctions, we measured BZRs using positron emission tomography (PET) and (11)C-flumazenil in 60 non-disabled patients with unilateral atherosclerotic ICA or MCA disease and no cortical infarction. Using 3-dimensional stereotactic surface projections, we calculated the BZR index, a measure

Childhood abuse and neglect and cognitive flexibility in adolescents.

Childhood maltreatment (CM) has been associated with diminished executive functioning in children and adults; however, there is a relative paucity of study of executive function in adolescents exposed to CM. Yet, executive dysfunction in adolescence may have important adverse consequences including increased vulnerability to risky behaviors and impaired school functioning. This study investigates the relationship between self-reported CM and an executive function, cognitive flexibility, in adolescents without identified psychiatric disorders. Effects of physical and emotional, abuse and neglec

Brain function with complex decision making using electroencephalography.

A computer-administered assessment for decision making relevant to daily-living decisions, using the technique of complex decision making (CDM), has been previously developed and tested in our laboratory. The present study sought to identify unique patterns of brain activity in the alpha band associated with CDM. We recorded electroencephalogram (EEG) from 30 scalp sites, during a series of baseline, eyes open fixation tasks, and CDM tasks, in different contexts, in a group of 9 male and 7 female young healthy adults, aged 18 to 34. The decision making contexts, designed to simulate real-world

Impaired task switching performance in children with dyslexia but not in children with autism.

Problems with cognitive control in both autism and dyslexia have already been reported in different studies. The present study specifically examined task-switching performance in children with autism and dyslexia. For this purpose, a multiple-trial paradigm was used with cues for colour- and shape-matching tasks presented before a run of trials. The cue could imply a task switch (when the cue changed the task) or a task repetition (when the cue did not change the task). Both reaction times and error rates were measured for switching, restarting, and general task performance. Participants were

Neuropsychological characteristics of young children from high-density alcoholism families: a three-year follow-up.

OBJECTIVE: We performed a follow-up study of a group of young children from high-density alcoholism families (HD children), who were first assessed about 3.5 years ago, with the aim of evaluating verbal span and visuospatial abilities (which differed significantly between HD and control [C] children at the first assessment), as well as other neuropsychological measures. METHOD: In this second assessment, 22 boys and girls were evaluated. They were comparable in family income and parents' level of education. The 12 HD children had an alcoholic father and at least two other alcoholic relatives,

Decreased cerebellar posterior vermis size in fragile X syndrome: correlation with neurocognitive performance.

We examined whether posterior vermis size is smaller in individuals with fragile X syndrome (fra X) than in control subjects and whether this decreased size is associated with cognitive performance. Cognitive and behavioral dysfunctions have been identified in fra X; however, underlying neuropathogenic mechanisms remain unclear. MRI was used to investigate the posterior fossa in 32 males with fra X, 28 males with other causes of cognitive disability (CD), and 38 males with normal development (ND) as well as and in 37 females with fra X and 53 female control subjects. Among females with fra X,

Executive anosognosia in progressive supranuclear palsy versus Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Executive function deficits are common among patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). Executive function refers to higher-order cognitive processes thought to involve fronto-striatal circuits. Some patients with executive deficits may be unable to recognize or report them, a condition we refer to as executive anosognosia. OBJECTIVE: To conduct a comparative analysis of executive anosognosia in patients diagnosed with PSP and PD. METHODS: We compared an objective neuropsychological assessment (ONA) of composite executive function (ONA-CEF),

Hot and Cool Executive Functions in Middle Childhood: Evidence for a Weak but Process-Specific Relationship.

Background: Executive functions (EFs) are cognitive and emotional abilities that underpin goal-directed behavior, decision-making, and problem-solving. EFs can be categorized into two broad types, Hot EFs and Cool EFs, distinguished by their relation to emotional processing. Cool EFs are associated with cognitive control, while Hot EFs involve emotional regulation and decision-making in emotionally charged contexts. EFs contribute to self-regulation, including the ability to adjust behavior in response to feedback. Methods: The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between Hot (

Neural mechanisms underlying cognitive inflexibility in obsessive-compulsive disorder: a review.

Cognitive inflexibility, a reduced capacity to shift mental set or update behavior when circumstances change, is a significant feature of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, while cognitive inflexibility is superficially a coherent entity, it appears to engage a range of distinct cognitive processes. This raises the question of how far deficits in different tasks involve the same core dysfunction and how far the dysfunctions are unique but superficially have similar results. Here we detail the neural basis of OCD deficits across eight tasks that challenge different aspects of cogniti

Visuospatial working memory capacity moderates the relationship between anxiety and OCD related checking behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Compulsive checking behavior is the most prevalent compulsive behavior in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). While some studies have shown that anxiety and executive function influence compulsive checking behavior, the relationship between these constructs is inconclusive. Hence, we sought to explore the interplay between executive function, anxiety and compulsive checking behavior. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 47 healthy participants (HC) and 51 patients with OCD participated in the study. Symptoms and emotional states were assessed using the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compul

Cognitive impairment and changes of red blood cell components and serum levels of IL-6, IL-18, and L-tryptophan in methamphetamine abusers.

UNLABELLED: The deficit in cognitive function is more concerning in methamphetamine (MA) users. The cognitive deficit was suspected to be the consequence of neuroinflammation-induced neurological dysregulation. In addition, activating the key enzyme in the tryptophan metabolic pathway by pro-inflammatory cytokines results in metabolite toxicity, further generating cognitive impairments. However, the evidence for the role of neuroinflammation and tryptophan metabolites involved in MA-induced cognitive deficit needs more conclusive study. OBJECTIVES: This retrospective study aimed to determine

5-day multi-session intermittent theta burst stimulation over bilateral posterior superior temporal sulci in adults with autism-a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Theta burst stimulation (TBS), a patterned repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) protocol with shorter simulation duration and lower stimulus intensity, could be a better protocol for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Our study aimed to explore the impacts of intermittent TBS (iTBS) over the bilateral posterior superior temporal sulcus (pSTS) on intellectually able adults with ASD. METHODS: In this randomized, single-blinded, sham-controlled crossover trial, 13 adults with ASD completed iTBS for 5 consecutive days over the bilateral pSTS and inion (as

Study of efficacy and safety of Jiaotai pill in the treatment of depression.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a common affective disorder characterized by marked and lasting melancholia, with corresponding thought and behavior changes. Due to an accelerated pace of life and increased work pressure, the incidence of depression has risen sharply, causing great harm to family and social life. Jiaotai pill (JTP) is a Chinese herbal formula that is commonly prescribed for depression and insomnia in clinical treatment, and exhibits antidepressant effects as shown in animal experimental research. However, there are no standard clinical trials to confirm its efficacy in treating depr

Long-term heroin use was associated with the downregulation of systemic platelets, BDNF, and TGF-β1, and it contributed to the disruption of executive function in Taiwanese Han Chinese.

BACKGROUND: Long-term heroin addicts have low plasma brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels. However, the mechanisms and effects of systemic disturbances of BDNF caused by heroin remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: Blood platelet might be a source of neurotrophic factors like BDNF and transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1. Thus, we investigated the effects of heroin on platelets, BDNF and TGF-β1, the association between blood platelets, BDNF, TGF-β1, and executive function in long-term heroin addicts. METHODS: We enrolled 170 heroin addicts and 141 healthy controls. We measured their plasma BD

Cognitive Flexibility in Primary Dystonia.

Objectives Although primary dystonia is typically characterized as a movement disorder, it is also associated with cognitive alterations in the domain of executive functioning which may arise from changes in cortico-basal ganglia circuits. Specifically, in comparison to healthy controls, patients with dystonia show deficits in neuropsychological tests of cognitive flexibility. However, it is unclear whether cognitive inflexibility is caused by the pathomechanisms underlying primary dystonia or by confounding factors such as depression or symptom-related distraction. Methods The present study ai
