Masseter length determines muscle spindle reflex excitability during jaw-closing movements.

INTRODUCTION: The masticatory muscles are considered to be important determinants of facial form, but little is known of the muscle spindle reflex characteristics and their relationship, if any, to face height. The aim of this study was to determine whether spindle reflexes, evoked by mechanical stimulation of an incisor and recorded on the masseter muscle, correlated with different facial patterns. METHODS: Twenty-eight adult volunteers (16 women; ages, 19-38 years) underwent 2-N tap stimuli to their maxillary left central incisor during simulated mastication. Reflexes were recorded during l

Evaluating craniofacial asymmetry with digital cephalometric images and cone-beam computed tomography.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to evaluate craniofacial asymmetry by using 2-dimensional (2D) posteroanterior cephalometric images, 3-dimensional cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), and physical measurements (gold standard). METHODS: Ten dry human skulls were assessed, and radiopaque markers were placed on 17 skeletal landmarks. Twenty linear measurements were taken on each side to compare the right and left sides and to compare these measurements with the physical measurements made with a digital caliper. To acquire the 2D posteroanterior radiographs, an Extraoral Phosphor Storage

Modified internal mandibular distraction osteogenesis in the treatment of micrognathia secondary to temporomandibular joint ankylosis: 4-year follow-up of a case.

Micrognathia and obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) are problems subsequent to temporomandibular joint ankylosis (TMJa) in growing patients. For patients with micrognathia and OSAS secondary to TMJa, it is important to restore proper mandibular form and dimension, achieve occlusal stability and recover satisfactory joint movement. We report a 4-year follow-up of a patient with micrognathia and OSAS secondary to bilateral TMJa. The treatment of this patient involved (1) a modified internal mandibular distraction osteogenesis without altering the pre-existing occlusion; (2) TMJ arthroplast

Computer-assisted condylar reconstruction in bilateral ankylosis of the temporomandibular joint using autogenous coronoid process.

During the past 10 years, more than 20 patients a year have been treated at our centre for bilateral ankylosis of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Here we describe the use of computer-assisted three-dimensional surgical planning and its clinical effects in condylar reconstruction for such patients using autogenous coronoid process. Sixteen patients with bilateral bony ankylosis of the TMJ from March 2006 to March 2009 were randomly divided into 2 groups and treated by bilateral osteoarthrectomy and condylar reconstruction by free grafting of autogenous coronoid process with and without three

Evaluation of the accuracy of linear measurements on spiral computed tomography-derived three-dimensional images and its comparison with digital cephalometric radiography.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to evaluate the accuracy of linear measurements obtained from reconstructed spiral CT images of human dry skulls in three planes by comparing them with direct skull measurements, and then to compare these with measurements made on photostimulable phosphor cephalograms. METHODS: Using a Siemens Somatom Sensation spiral CT scanner (Munich, Germany), CT images of six human dry skulls were imported into imaging software (Mimics 11.02 Materialise, Leuven, Belgium) and the measurements made were compared to the direct measurements made using a digital calliper (

Hyperintensity signal in the joint space of the temporomandibular joint on fat-saturated T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging.

Our aim was to investigate the incidence of a hyperintense signal in the joint space of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) on fat-saturated T2-weighted magnetic resonance images (MRIs). We studied 112 patients (224 joints) with disorders of the TMJ who were examined by T2-weighted MRI, and recorded the association between displacement of the disc and the hyperintense signal using the κ coefficient. A hyperintense signal was found in 4 of 91 joints (4%) when the disc was in the normal position, in all 19 joints with anterior disc displacement with reduction, and in 108 of the 114 joints (95%) wi

Bone scintigraphy of human temporomandibular joints during Herbst treatment: a case report.

Bone scintigraphy results were compared with changes shown on orthopantomographic radiographs in a patient with facial asymmetry, before, during, and after Herbst treatment, and followed up with control of growth activity in the temporomandibular joints (TMJs) after long-term retention. The present study showed that new bone formation (modelling) was initiated asymmetrically in TMJs during treatment. The results indicate that late development of right/left asymmetry in the occlusion can be corrected and normalized using the Herbst appliance therapy, stimulating a differentiated 'catch up' grow

The diagnostic value of ultrasonography to determine the temporomandibular joint disk position.

OBJECTIVE: Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) arthrography and magnetic resonance imaging are the imaging techniques of choice in patients presenting with signs and symptoms of TMJ disorders suggesting soft tissue pathosis. With the disadvantage of arthrography as an invasive procedure and magnetic resonance imaging posing a problem in clinical availability and cost, the purpose of this study was to determine whether ultrasonography could be used to assess the presence or absence of disk displacement in patients with TMJ disorders. STUDY DESIGN: In 17 patients, 100 TMJ positions were investigated
