OBJECTIVES: Vestibular schwannomas (VS) are benign tumors that arise from unregulated growth of Schwann cells. Both benign and malignant tumors are believed to contain tumor stem cells that are hypothesized to originate from dysregulation of tumor suppressors and oncogenes. We aimed to determine if schwannoma cells express stem cell genes and markers and if activation of the proto-oncogenes epidermal growth factor receptor and platelet-derived growth factor receptor would regulate the stem cell properties of these cells.

Peptide deformylase (PDF) is a prokaryotic metalloenzyme that is essential for bacterial growth and is a new target for the development of antibacterial agents. The effects of modulators of cytochrome P450 and reduced glutathione (GSH) on the hepatotoxicity of enalapril maleate (EN) were investigated in Fischer 344 rats. Radiation induced fibrosis of the skin is a late toxicity that may result in loss of function due to reduced range of motion and pain. Liver toxicity caused by high-dose myeloablative therapy leads to significant morbidity after hematopoietic cell transplantation. We examined the hypothesis that liver toxicity after cyclophosphamide and total body irradiation is related to cyclophosphamide through its metabolism to toxins. BACKGROUND: Aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) catalyzes the detoxification of aliphatic aldehydes, including acetaldehyde. About 45% of Han Chinese (East Asians), accounting for 8% of humans, carry a single point mutation in ALDH2*2 (E504K) that leads to accumulation of toxic reactive aldehydes.
METHODS: Sequencing of a small Mexican cohort and a search in the ExAC genomic database for additional ALDH2 variants common in various ethnic groups was set to identify missense variants. These were evaluated in vitro, and in cultured cells expressing these new and common variants.

CS-747 (prasugrel, LY640315) is a member of the thienopyridine class of oral platelet aggregation inhibitors that includes ticlopidine and clopidogrel. Chronic ethanol abuse is associated with increased activity of the microsomal ethanol-oxidizing system.
