AIMS: Fibroadipogenic progenitors (FAPs) are a group of resident muscle stem cells capable of differentiating into fibroblasts and adipocytes, contributing to intramuscular fibrotic and fatty degeneration after injury. However, FAPs are also thought to play a crucial role in muscle regeneration by facilitating satellite cell myogenesis. Despite this dual role, the precise functions of FAPs in muscle degeneration and regeneration remain unclear. This study aimed to utilize a FAP depletion mouse model to define the role of FAPs in two distinct, clinically relevant injury models of rotator cuff t

The use of shoulder manipulation in the treatment of frozen shoulder syndrome remains controversial. Opponents cite the risk of dislocation, fracture, nerve palsy, and rotator cuff tearing as limiting the usefulness of manipulation. A retrospective study of 38 shoulder manipulations in 32 patients was performed. These patients were followed for an average time of 58 months. The patients were examined in follow up for combined shoulder range of motion, external and internal rotation strength, and status of the long head of the biceps. Manipulation was performed in all patients by the senior aut

In recent years, Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes) has been reported to affect postoperative outcomes. The purpose of this study was to examine the detection rate and clinical features of C. acnes infection after open shoulder surgery. Fifty-nine patients (33 males and 26 females; mean age, 69.1 years) were included. Samples were collected from a skin swab at the incision site prior to skin preparation. Further samples were collected from synovial swabs at the glenohumeral joint immediately after incision and before incision closure. Samples with C. acnes-positive skin swab cultures were defined

BACKGROUND: It has been reported that the addition of dexamethasone to interscalene brachial plexus block (ISBPB) prolongs the duration of the block effect. However, there have been no studies focusing on the effects of dexamethasone on rebound pain after the block effect has worn off. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect on postoperative pain when dexamethasone was added to ISBPB for arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (ARCR).
METHODS: In this multicenter, single-blinded, and randomized controlled study, 54 patients (33 males, 21 females) who received ARCR were randomly assigned

UNLABELLED: There is a paucity of information on latissimus dorsi transfer (LDT) for subscapularis insufficiency. The purpose of this study is to report the outcome of LDT to reconstruct an irreparable subscapularis tear.
METHODS: Excluding patients with prior failed Latarjet procedures, we examined 56 consecutive patients who underwent open (n = 14) or arthroscopic (n = 42) LDT. The average age was 53 years (range, 23-79), and 46 patients had a prior surgery. Outcome measures included visual analog scale score for pain, range of motion (ROM), subjective shoulder value (SSV), and Constant sho

BACKGROUND: Use of the arm above shoulder level has been described as a risk factor for developing rotator cuff tears (RCT). There is a lack of information regarding the frequency and distribution of RCT in a population using their arms above shoulder level during daily work. The aim of this study was to analyze clinical and radiographic findings in a population of painters working more than 10 years and to compare the results with a control group (CG).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 100 individuals working more than 10 years as a painter were compared to 100 matched controls without using their arms

Hemidiaphragmatic paralysis is the most common adverse effect associated with interscalene block. In most cases, it resolves with the resolution of nerve blockade with only an estimated incidence of 0.048% persisting for longer duration. Occasionally, interscalene block is also associated with recurrent laryngeal nerve block and seldom with cranial nerve paresis. We present a case of delayed onset and prolonged hemidiaphragmatic paralysis that was associated with 3 cranial nerve deficits after interscalene nerve block for shoulder surgery performed under general anesthesia in the beach chair p

PURPOSE: Reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) is an effective surgery for a variety of patients with difficult shoulder pathology. Since postsurgical outcomes are often variable, there has been great effort made to optimize the design and use of these implants. Previous studies demonstrated an association between increased glenosphere size and improved range of motion. The purpose of this study is to assess the relationship between glenosphere size, range of motion, and functional outcome scores.
METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study of 140 patients (148 shoulders) undergoing reverse s

INTRODUCTION: Arthroscopic lower trapezius tendon transfer (aLTT) is an effective strategy to treat massive rotator cuff tears by dynamically restoring the posterior aspect of the rotator cuff force couple and improving range of motion, strength, pain, and stability. aLTT is technically challenging with higher complication rates, and its learning curve has yet to be defined. We aimed to establish a learning curve for aLTT through trends in surgical time, postoperative outcomes, and complications. We hypothesized that increased surgeon experience would be associated with decreased surgical time

INTRODUCTION: In reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) new designs enable greater amounts of lateralization to prevent instability and scapular notching and increase range of motion, however, excessive lateralization leads to stress upon the acromion that can result in scapular spine fatigue fractures. Aim of this study was to gender- and size-specifically assess the influence of glenosphere size and different humeral designs on lateralization, distalization, and bony impingement-free range of motion (ROM) in patients undergoing RSA.
METHODS: Computed tomography scans from 30 osteoarthritic pat

Shoulder pain in wheelchair users that participate in competitive adaptive sports can be a troublesome condition. Shoulder pain not only affects athletic performance but also affects functional activities such as wheelchair propulsion and weight bearing during transfers. Managing pain in these athletes thus presents a unique challenge because of the difficulty in achieving relative rest and the need to modify athletic shoulder-focused rehabilitation strategies. In all athletes, it is vital to establish an early, accurate diagnosis and optimize conservative treatment before considering surgical
